The "barkeep" in Emil Carlson' place
at Sixth and Davis streets waa eating

drinking beer and conversing in low

A more cheerful atmosphere pervaded
the Arcade bar at Sixth and Couch
streets. There waa a good crowd. A
piano and a violin were twanging; mer
rily. "I Love You. I Do." the mum
clans played, and the crowd clinked
glaxses In honor of old John Barley
corn.
Outside It waa snowing. A crowd of
children, negroes and Chinese, ran by
blowing horns. Two women ran from
the side door of a lodglnc-house. They
pelted each other with' tha enow and

Prune Packing Plant to Grow.

That the local prune packing plant of
W. F. Drager & Co, of Salem, will un
dergo extensive improvements durinic
the year wa. announced here today by
Mr. Draper. Work will probably begin
eaily in the Spring.
Between 100 and 200 men will shoul
der picks and shovels and proceed to
tha intake at the bead of Columbia
slough and open the trench to let in
the current from Columbia Kiver at a
soecitic time yet to be decided on.
This, is the plan of the general com
mittee that is working up a plan for
dredging Columbia slough for sewerage
and a ehiD channel, and it was aeciaea
at the meeting held Wednesday night
that a practical demonstration was
necessary to show that a current can
be turned into the slough, by cutting a
new trench for a distance of about 200
feet.
A meeting of interested pro-perty
owners will be held with the committee
next Wednesday night at the home of
J. M. Leach. 1140 Mallory avenue, to
complete arrangements for this dem
onstration. A day will be appointed
that will be convenient for the men to
do this work, and the party will then
$ro to the head of the slough under the
charge of George b. fchepnero.
It is planned to circulate petitions on
the peninsula and In the Columbia
slough district asking the assistance of
the City Council, the port ol roruana
and the Federal Government in areas
