6 CO RE BOARD FIGURES TO IDEN
TIFY COAST PLAYERS.
Aameralff Correspond In g: With Those in
Programmes W ill Tell Who Goes to
Bat InEach Innln;.
Two or three years ago the Pacific
Coast League tried the innovation of
attaching: pumbers to the players
eleeves for identification purposes. The
laudable scheme went awry because the
numbers were too small and principally
because the managers and players did
not co-operate as they should have
done.
This year a new plan is to be Intro
duced. W. W. Metzger. business manager,
has painted out the space on the old
scoreboard reserved for the Portland
Northwest League club, and large num
bers will be displayed there correspond
ing with the printed programmes.
The scoreboy has also been instructed
to flash the number of the first man at
bat in each inning. Fans thus can
know the exact batting order at all
times and the name of every player as
he comes to bat. This is something on
the order of the electric boards in use
in the major league parks, and has been
introduced in all Coast League parks.
Under the old system the scorebooks
were a sorry jumble most of the time,
due to sudden shifts in the batting
orders just before the game.
