CASTER TUESDAY PEKHAPS it was tho approach of roi-carome or mW-Lent which also hnppened to bo the celebration of St. Patrick's day that caused a small break in the lull and wearisome days that have been allotted to societj during the Spring months. In days of old. tho custom of celebrating St. Pat rick' day was devoted chiefly to deeds of philanthropy. Iviter. the manner ol celebration was changed to parades, apeech-making and banquets by various fraternal and civic orders. Thi6 year, whether from the effect of conditions caused by the terrible war abroad, or because people are reverting to old customs, March 17 again has come Into its .wn as a day for good deeds. Charitable affairs marked the day this year, instead of the usual trumpet blowing and ornate parades. Social affairs marked the season, most of them having charity uppermost in their minds. Now comes the Cathedral ffrand ball, with a charitable purpose, that of furnishing the new school for the chil dren of the parish. Many women, some of whom have not taken part in a social event of any nature for many years, are actively interested in making this affair a tremendous success. Old settlers and pioneers have come forth with offers of assistance, and the young belles also are working earnestly to make the event a brilliant one. One of the smartest and most in teresting events of the week was the wedding of Mrs. Eliiabeth Tongue freeman to Frank Edward Fey, which was charmina: in its informality and simplicity. Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Furlow, interestinc visitors from Gotham, also shone biiphtly in the social life of the week. Thursday many adieux wire said to Mr. and Mrs. Martin Gay Lom bard and small son Ben who left for a six months' visit to the Fair City. San Francisco.
