JTora London via the Orient and Paget Sound points on her' maiden royage the Royal Mail liner Carnarvon shire reached Portland and moored at the North Bank dock at 5 o'clock last night. She is a sister to the Cardigan shire and they are the largest commer cial vessels that have entered the Co lumbia. She crossed the Pacific In 12 days and 20 hours. The Carnarvonshire brought 3600 tons of miscellaneous freight for the Pacific Northwest, 2000 tons of which are for Portland. She will load barley, wheat, flour and lumber here for the Orient. She left London April 14. This newest of the Shire line is a splendidly equipped freighter. She is B21 feet long, 2 feet beam and 37.6 feet depth of hold. Captuln J. Boliand is her master and Bhe has four officers, two cadets and eight engineers. The chief officer is C. Morris; second officer, A. Murphy; third. J. W. Laidlaw, and fourth, G. Ed wards. The two cadets are R. Burrell and J. King. The chief engineer is D. Ingles; the second. Edwin Boxall; the third M. Collis; the fourth. J. Hamil ton; the fifth, F. Lorenson and E. Glad win, and the sixth, E. Mungo and F. Copp. The chief steward is W. Mat thews. ' VIRGINIA HERE FOR GRAIN British Steamer and Dutch Vessel to Take Last of Crop. The British steamer Virginia arrived In the harbor last night and moored at the Irving dock. She is chartered to M. H. Houser to load grain for the United Kingdom. She and the Dutch steamer Maria, now loading, under charter to Kerr, Glfford & Co.. will clean up the remainder of the 1S13-14 crop. Two other British steamers, the Lord Sefton and the Tymeric, were in the harbor yesterday. The Lord Seftori finished unloading coal and moved to St. Helens to take on a cargo of cre osoted ties for India. The Tymeric, under charter to Balfour, Guthrie & Co.. left last night for Australia with 3,500.000 feet of lumber. Due Monday are the steamers Strath clyde from Comox, B. C, which will load lumber for Shanghai, and the New Zealand Transport, from Karatsu, Japan, which will load lumber for China. The steamer Strathallan is due later in the week to load lumber for Australia. The German bark Dalbek and the schooner Mabel Gale are also due here next week. The Dalbek is coming in ballast from Santa Rosalia, and is un der charter to M. H. Houser to carry wheat to Europe. The Gale is on her way from Auckland, New Zealand, for a cargo of lumber. The British steamer Virginia arrived today from Yokohama en route to Portland, where she is to load grain. The British steamer Carnarvonshire, of the Royal Mail line, arrived this morning from Puget Sound and wen' to Portland. The gasoline schooner Mirene sailed today for Waldport with general cargo. The gasoline schooner Delia arrived during the night from Nestucca with 160 cases of cheese for Portland. The steamer Multnomah sailed today for San Francisco with lumber from St. Helens. The tank steamer Frank H. Buck has arrived from California with 51,000 barrels of fuel oil. COOS BAT. Or, July 4. (Special.) The steamship Breakwater sailed to day from Marshfield for Portland, car rying passengers and freight. SHEEP RECEIPTS LARGE Active Marketing Movement Now On in Northwest. The weekly official market report of the Portland Union Stockyards Company fol lows: Receipts for the week have been: Cattle, 1782; calves. 28: hogs, 4018; sheep, 8839. There was an extraordinarily heavy run of cattle the first of the week, 63 cars being unloaded, half of these being from California points. Several cars of fed stuff sold at 87.50, grass steers at 87.25. cows at $6 to 86.25, spayed heifers at 86.75. The price on bulls ranged from 84 to 84.50. Swine trade opened firm and remained unchanged to the end of the week's period; JS was the average top price, with receipts of fair volume. Sheephouse action was never more brisk for the month of June than it has been for the last few daya. The movement to market attained large proportions, with re ceipts climbing up around 9000 for the five days. Top grsdes of sheep and lambs were in good demand, and prices steady with last week. In a final report the Marion County grand jury says it could find no evidence that gambling- was being Indulged in here or that the local option law was being violated in the clubrooms of sev eral fraternal and social organizations. There have been numerous reports that poker and other gambling games were being played, but the police were unable to find any.
