At Oakland San Franciaco 3. Oakland 2 (10 innings.) , , At Los Angeles Los Angeles ft. Vsnlc SACRAMENTO, June 20. (Special.) For 12 weeks Sacramento fandom has entertained the opinion that Sailor Stroud was the only Sacramento pitch er who could twirl a shut-out game. Today Claude "Williams, Southern As sociation southpaw, acquired via the Detroit route, achieved the distinction of pitching the first ehut-out game tor Sacramento this year In which Sailor Stroud did not ligrure. Thanks to the inefficiency of southpaw Evans. . the , Portland Beavers drew B-to-0 blank, the Wolves' fourth win of the elght- : game series. '-' The game was won and lost in the second inning, and the Twirler Evans has nobody but himself to blame. . With "one gone, Van Buren and Moran each 'beat out infield hits when Evans knocked down drives, fatting to hold ' them himself and knocking them just far enough so that Shortstop Bancroft could not field them. Then Evans cut loose a wild throw to Derrick to catch Moran off first ana both run ners advanced. Evans issued a walk to Hallinan, filling the bases. Hannah bounced a wicked drive off Bancroft's toes for a single, scoring . Van Buren and Moran. Evans looked around, saw second base unoccupied, so walked Williams in order to have the sacks loaded again. Young rapped one at Bancroft, who tonsed to Rodgers, forcing Williams. .Rodsers threw wide to first in the at tempt for a double play, Young mak ing second, Hannah making third and Hallinan scoring Evans looked around again, saw that i first was unoccupied and once, again : filled them . walking Orr. Then, for fear somebody else might happen to leave a base unoccupied, Evans hit Coy on the wrist with a pitched ball, .forcing in Hannah and keeping the bases loaded. That was all for Mr. Evans. Rleger t went to the rescue and Tennant wel comed him with a single to center, , st oring Young. Billy Orr tried to score from second on the hit, but Bill Speas was on deck with a perfect throw to the plate and Orr was trapped, end ing the inning. -. b;c- . llartinoni took the mound in the next Inning and held the Wolves to four hits and no runs In six tedious innings tedious because the Beavers were not showing enough signs of life to create liny doubt about Sacramento's five-run lead being a sure ming. score. SCHNEIDER MISSED SADLY Vancouver Lead Not Regarded in Immediate Danger by Portus Bax ter, V1k, However, Comments on Strength, of Spokane. BY PORTU8 BAXTER. SEATTLE, Wash., June 20. (Spe cial.) The Portland Coast League club has a promising young catcher In Brenegan, who was seen In Seattle a few days following tne injury of Catcher Danny Shea, of the Spokane team. In a collision at the plate with Pitcher Al Bonner, of Seattle. Whether the owners of the Portland olub did the right thing in bolstering up the Spo kane club to the detriment of Seat tle is a question that probably will fall by the wayside, as Seattle did not enter an official protest, It was taken for granted hera that Spokane had acquired title of some kind to Brenegan when he started in to catch, but suddenly he was recalled, which made it appear that Portland only "loaned" Brenegan to tha Indians. Brenegan comes the nearest to Catcher Larry McLean, who was In his prime when with Portland, of any young backstop seen in the Northwest ern League. It is true that he does not receive quite as easily and may be a trifle less in height, but he is at least six feet two Inches tall, and will weigh close to Its pounds. He throws accurately and has a 310,000 avm. From what I saw of him I should Judge that, like most young catchers, he tries to get too much speed on the ball. In other words, he throws too hard, but plenty of work will straighten out that matter. He is a free and a hard hitter. Unless the pitcher is keeping the ball well on the outside corner the right . field should play close to the line for him. He Is something like Melchlor, of the Portland"- Northwestern Club, In pull ing hem fast down the right alley. Don't feed hrm fast balls within reao. He will kill them. Last year Brenegan was with the Petersburg club, in the Virginia State League. In $9 games he batted .278. He stood tenth among the catchers in fielding, with a record of .871. -Seattle feels tne loss ot Pete Schneider. When the - ederal League tried to steal him and were so suc cessful in their attempt that the only way out for President Dugdale was to let him go to Cincinnati, they did a "fine" Job toward knocking Seat tle -out of the pennant. Taking Schneider out of Dugdale's club was the same as if Mathewson 'deserted New York or Walter Johnson "Jumped" Washington. With Schneider pitching, Seattle's won and lost columns would look considerably different. It cer tainly was an odd coincidence that Manager Raymond lost the services of his star pitcher on the same day in two successive years. Al Gipe was the leading pitcher of the Northwest ern League in 1813 until he Injured his Bhoulder in Portland. Schneider was not Injured, but his lack of moral stamina injured Seattle. Nick Williams will bring his Port land Coast League club back to Seat tle Monday. The series originally was scheduled for Portland, but transferred here because the Portland fans do not care much for the Northwestern League. The coming week In the Northwest ern League does not Suggest any de velopments that will weaken Van couver's hold on first place. Seattle lost the lead through Van couver's success with Tacoma and their misfortunes against bpoaane. a that could not ao anytning own team Baseball Statistics 20 82 -3So 18 S .315 28 30 .438 23 27 .481 22 27 .4411 MS 82 .418 24 25 .480 28 30 .483 28 85 .M 1U 88.343 23 21 lb2S 1 27 .400 15 21 841 STANDINGS OF THE TEAMS.
