FAMOUS DIVORCE COLONY BROKEN UP New Nevada Law Will Not Be Seriously Contested, as at First Threatened. HISTORIC PRIVILEGE GOES Requirement of Full Year's Rest . dence Puts State on Par With OthersXoted Couples Have Been Unmated There. RENO, New. June 28. (Special.) Midnight, June 30, practically marks the end of the Reno divorce colony. After that hour It will no longer be possible for the divorce-seeker to take advantage of the six months' residence clause which for years has been In ef fect In Nevada. On January 1, 1914, the amended divorce law passed by the last State Legislature goes Into effect, requiring a year's residence' before ap plication for divorce may be made. Ar rivals after June 30, 1913. will find It Impossible - to come within the six months" provision of the law. This re quirement puts Nevada on a par with other states in Its divorce law. Reno divorce lawyers who asserted they would fight the new amendment,' declaring It unconstitutional, have thrown up their hands in despair and no attempt will be made to fight the reform. It was expected that the In flux of divorce-seekers would be alarm ingly large, but hardly any difference has been noted. Any divoroe-seeker ar riving in Reno after June 30 must wait a full year before filing an action for divorce. City Look Butt of Ridicule. For years, as a result of the laxity of Nevada Jivorce requirements, Reno was held up to the ridicule of the world. To register in any city from Reno caused a smile and a Joke to follow. After actual residents of Reno had stood this treatment for some time, they re solved to remove the stigma from the name of the city and when the last State Legislature met at Carson City a delegation of mothers chartered a spe cial train and descended in a body upon the Legislature and demanded that the law be amended. The Legislature ac ceded to the demand. New York furnished the greater num ber of the divorce-seekers. Many of these women conducted themselves in a disgraceful, wanton manner, and soon the effect became manifest in Reno. Homes were broken up. Husbands for sook their wives for the women of the divorce colony and the scandals be came frequent. There was no feature of the life of the little Nevada me tropolis with its 11,000 souls they did not invade. Divorce-seekers who found time hanging heavily upon their hands registered at the University of Ne vada, taking special courses. They nat urally attracted the attention of the 1'ouns men students until it became necessary for the co-eds to issue a proc lamation to the effect that students seen in the company of these divorce seekers would not be invited to af fairs given by the youns women of the college. M Buddington. known as the father of the divorce colony, who, .although s millionaire,-secured ra Job selling tick ets in a motion-picture house In order to testify -that he really was in Reno in good faith and had regular employ ment.- It has been estimated that fully 75 per. cent .of those who came to Reno seeking divorce sought positions in the town and rather than add wealth to the community actually took money away.
