Quite often it occurs. In the case of enlisted men, that they t'" a course in jnulemanship,' as mules are ridden more than horses l V. aP4niarV. The infantry officers are required to ride well enough to perform any riding that might come up in connection with their duties, but the course they take is not nearly so rough or strenuous as that given for the artillery officers or men. An infantry officer does well to ride a certain number of miles three miles In 10 minutes in a certain time, but the artillery officer must be able to do this much, and put his animal over ditches, steeples, brick or stone walls, ride horses that are not easily ridden, and be thoroughly competent to do the most strenuous duty on horseback. Three times a week these classes in horsemanship are held, on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday during the Winter months. The Lieutenants go out one day and then the Captains go. The enlisted men are also required to learn to ride. Many are fully as ex pert in riding as the best of officers, and one man in particular won many prizes for his daring riding at the Pen dleton Round-Up this year. ...
