I I Sv Tugs, Barges and Other Machinery Recommended and Proposals Will Be Invited Probably Within Next 30 Days. Washington reports that there will be further reductions in the rivers and harbors bill affecting appropriations for the lower Willamette and column! have not deterred Major Mclndoe, Corps f Engineers. U. S. A., from proceeding with the preliminary details of as sembling equipment for the two J4-lnch suction dredges to be built, and yester day he forwarded specifications to the Chief of Engineers for floating prop erty which will necessitate an expend! ture of many thousands of dollars. First of the Items are two steam tugs, which will be used as tenders for the dredges. They will be christened J. C. Post and H. M. Adams, In memory of deceased engineer officers, and will be 69 feet long, with beams of 17 feet and depth of hold of 7.C feet. Besides there will be six fuel barges, three for each dredge, which will be 124 feet long, 32 feet wide and 5.10"4 feet deep. Derrick Bargcea Provided For. Provision Is also made for derrick barges, four in all, to be 51 feet long, 22.6 feet wide and 2.11 feet deep. To float the 24-inch pipe lines from each dredge to shore there will be 100 pon 3 toons, each 26.4 feet long, 12 , feet wide and 2.6 feet deep. Specifications for the dredges were forwarded to Washington a few weeks ago for approval, and on being returned minor changes were ordered, which have been carried out, and the papers again sent to the War Department for final inspection. When they are re ceived here bids will be advertised for and the dredges are expected to be ready for service next year. Reran Expected In SO Days. Specifications for the tugs, fuel barges, derrick barges and pon toons probably will be returned to Portland In a month and then proposals will be invited. There will be no haste displayed in getting contracts as there is no reason for any of. the equipment being completed In advance of the dredges. ' Unless some provision is made in the sundry civic bill so that more of the funds originally asked for are placed at the disposal of Major Mclndoe, suc cessful bidders on the tugs and barges "will not receive all of their money promptly, as it will be arranged for in the next apportionments. Congress hav ing pledge itself to take care of the expenditures. M. H. Houser became known Thursday, she being taken to load In October November, while Balfour, Guthrie & Co. have chartered the British steamer Crown of Galicia to load general cargo at Antwerp for Pacific Coast harbors, and she will probably return with wheat- The same firm has taken .the French bark Bayard to load general STEAMER INTELLIGENCE. There were about 600 bales sf the material, which la used In sacking grain, and - because of tbe approaching harvest . shipments are being made frequently from Calcutta Several years ago most of the bags were transported on sailing vessels to Portland, but now they move in steamers and are largely trans ' shipped here. ' The duty on gunnies and burlap is ' 7-8 cents a pound and 15 per cent of the market value. The quotations fluc tuate at Calcutta and for that reason . the duty on each sack runs from lt to i cents. There Is a stiff demand .' every season for bags, as only the . cleanest and best are used, and with '-wheat being exported amd sent to do mestic ports in sacks there are few used .a second time. Besides In shipping . from interior warehouses to tidewater the, sacks frequently are damaged and unless they can be easily repaired it Is necessary to resack the cereal. ".BRIDGE TIMBERS GO SOUTH Carlos Will Load Material From Xew Railroad Crossing. Approximately 100,000 feet of timbers ; that were used on the falsework of the new Harrlman bridge, and whlcn were torn down and placed tn a boom bn the East Side, will be loaded aboard the steamer Carlos and sent to San ' Francisco. Arrangements were made yesterday with Captain Peterson, skip- per of the Carlos, to place the timbers " on deck. She will load grain in the hold and finish her deckload with lum ber at the Portland mill. .. There are more timbers to be low- -ered from the bridge. Owing to the de lay In getting electricity the draw can not be operated until tomorrow or Tuesday and during the week it will be raised and lowered frequently so that - adjustment of weights can be made. As ' soon as possible the lower draw or rail ' road section will be started. WIRELESS MAX GETS SHIP RCX Moe, of Marshfield, Leaves Station to Go on Breakwater. MARSHFIELD. Or, June 15. (Spe cial.)
