MISS GOSS ALSO WINNER Mln Morris' Handicap Prove Too Much for Her In Finals of Wom en' Singles Kyle, and Wolf ard Take Mrn'i Double. FT RALPH H. MITCHELL. On of tha moit Interesting tennla tournaments In tha history of th' Irv ington CI nb wu that which closed yes terday after running 10 daya, and thera wfrt but two or thrca surprises In tha winners. Brandt Wlckersham, club and city champion and also holder, with Ralph Gorrall, of tha double championship of the Northwest, again rama through the play with flying color and added another trophy, a second Wilbur cup, to his already Ions; Hat. This last trophy ha may bold but one year, if a better man develop before tha next fiprlng tourney arrives, for It Is a three-year cup and must ba won three times In succession befor It ran be coma a permanent possession. Wlcker sham played a wonderfully steady game, a necessity with hla owa-40 hand trap. Van Loan, the runnerup. made the rhamplon fight hard from start to fin ish. As predicted, the winners of the match between Mlasei Goss and Morris was hard to name till the last ball had been served, for Mies Morris took the first set at - with apparent mm and It wu not till tha second aet had gone three (tames that Miss God began to pull up and made a through run with tha aecond and third sets. Total f B3 Casae Played. As some expected, tha youngsters proved their mettle In the play for the men's doubles, Kyle and Wolfard win ning; over Cooke and Gill after tha longest match of the tournament, a total of 53 games being played. The entrance of the younger element In tennla play of the club waa wel comed by the committee and will b encouraged. One of the prettiest and, from a apeo lator'a viewpoint, the most Interesting match of the day waa the finals in tha mixed double. which. Mrs. Raley and J. II. Smith Won after a bitter contest losing the second set In such fashion ft. would have led one to believe that the match would be lost. The play of Mrs. Raley, who has not been In tha gaina for two or three years, and that of her partner, who has been out of play for a longer period, waa wonder ful and showed clearly that some can "rome hack" In the game of tennis. Relh riayeil at Srrateh. Roth teams played at scratch and this In Itself accounted for beautiful work tha part of all four players. . Mr. N'orthup and Mrs. Raley play much the same style, both belna; aggressive and strong at all polnta of the game. That Mrs. Raley and Smith make a good team In mixed doublea waa evidenced throughout the entire tournament, at no stage of which there waa the leaat doubt In their own minds aa to their ability to win the tournament, and they did. though It waa not with ea.e. Woaaea'a Doable la Sarprtea. The biggest surprise of theafter noon's play waa tha result In the von en'a doublea, aa many had figured that Mlsaea Campbell and Schaefer would de feat Miss Houston and Mrs. Judge, though the latter team haa been play ing a wonderful game this year. Mra Judge haa Improved her play to a great degree. Mis Houston, being assistant Instructor In tha women'a department of athletics at the Oregon Agricultural College, la a most athletlcally-bullt girl, la atrong and aggressive In her game, la willing to take all chances and gets most of them and In It all makea a strong partner In tennis doubles. Miss Schaefer, early In the season, played a great game, but the past few weeka have not been conducive to bringing out her usually fast and steady stride, and she waa unable to play her usually capable game In the tournament Just closed, the first of the season. Mln Campbell haa had a strenuous time during the tournament's play, having been acheduled ofttlmes for two matchea a day. aa happened In several other cases. Miss Campbell has been playing a good gam so far this year, but ran do better. The trophlee of the tournament were distributed to the wlnnera after the tournament by F. H, V. Andrews, mem ber of the tennis committee. !)! Party Plaaaed. The Seraphs made a bid In the ninth Inning, getting two men on with only one out on a low throw by Lindsay and a slash through short by Slagle, but Klawltter tightened and the two mighty swatters, Howard and Berger, lined to Rodgers. Dillon's men did get one run In the ninth but that was on a wild heave by Flaher when Drlscoll and Howard manipulated a double steal. The ninth, though, was an exciting climax to an Interesting pitchers' duel. Berger drive was a bee-liner that Rodgers barely reached. Howard oc cupied second at the time, and had the ball gone a foot to either aid th story might have been different Klawltter la Good Form.
