The a-eneral opinion was that while a great deal could, be done by the adop tion jbt effective laws, much more could be gained by International agreement. There waa no division on tne vote. Legislation requiring- wireless ap paratus on ocean steamers to be con stantly manned by operators will be Included In the programme of Kepre sentatlve Alexander, of Missouri, chair man of the committee on merchant marine. The Women's Kellef Commutes took charge of her here, supplied her with more than she had before and sent her and her bus band on their way rejoicing. Woolcott was In New York to meet Ms bride, but until the Carpathla ar rived did not know .whether she was alive. NEW FRENCH LINER SAILS Giant Hilp.'CarrjInj; Robert Racon, Takes Southern Route. HAVRE. France. April 20. The France, the new 27.000-ton French liner, sailed from Havre at 1 o'clock thla afternoon on her maiden voyage to New York. Robert Bacon, who recently resigned as American Minister to France, and Mrs. Bacon, departed from Farla to Havre, where they embarked on board the France. The official French delega tion to the Charaplaln festivities de parted at the same time and will sail with Mr. and Mrs. Bacon. J. ralptaz. general manager of the French line, who also Is a passenger en the France, said orders had been given to take the extreme southern course. Feterson. on his ranch three miles below here. Mr. leterson gained the knowledge that almonds can be successfully grown here by planting a few trees four years ago. Last year these trees bore an abundance of nut. ' . Growing almonds for the market la a paying Industry In the Goodnoe Hills country, on the Columbia ltlver slope, and Mr. Feterson in sanguine that the conditions here for raising nuts are Identical with other parts of Klickitat County. CONSUL DEMANDS RELEASE Rebel Ordered to Free American Prisoner at Chihuahua. WASHINGTON. April JO. Demands have been made on the rebel authorities at Chihuahua by American Consul Letcher for tbs Immediate release of two Americans Imprisoned there. The men have been In confinement since March 1. but the American official has just learned of their plight. Their names were not given out. About 100 re sponded, but as the proceedings devel oped Lady Granard found that those of her gueets who were not Conservatives were either finn Felners of Gaelic Leaguers. After an hour, occupied mostly In hostile criticism of the Lib eral party, she gave up her idea of forming a "council" of Liberal women In that part of Ireland, and returned to London full of disappointment. Her lieutenant In this new political enterprise was Mrs. Hubert Beaumont, daughter of M. T. Grace, who Is at present taking an active Interest in ths home rule movement. It waa their In tention to establish Women's Councils throughout Ireland, but It la feared their Longford experience will hasten the end of their political ambitions In the EmeraM Isle. Among ths survivors of ths disaster are two llttla boys, probably made orphans by the sinking of the liner. Titanic They are bright little French chaps, IV and 1H years old. and answer to the names of Ixuis and Loto. What tbelr surnaras Is has not beeu established and noth ing Is known of their relatives. Some of the rescued Titanic pass engers said they were In the second cabin In care of a man named Hoff man, and according to the paasenger list a "Mr. Hoffman," and two chil dren were on board the Ill-fated steam ship. Miss Haya says they ara remurkably bright children and evi dently came from a good family. SPOKANE HAS "OPEN SHOP" Large- Contractors In Power City Post Declaration. SPOKANE. Wash.. April 20. Twenty of the largest contractors of Spokane employing men of the building trades posted an "open shop" order here to day. The order, which affects carpen ters, brick and stone masons, plumbers, electrical workers, concrete men and others engaged In the building trades, states that the contractors- no longer will hire union men exclusively. The unions have taken no action with regard to the notice as yet.
