Containing seversl psges of statistics thst are valuable to prospective motor truck purchasers, filled with many In teresting facts concerning the. work done by power vehicles in all parts of the country and lllustrsted with photo graphs and drawings, the catalogue of 112 Alco motor-trucks Is being dis tributed by F. Sleddon. Oregon Ksent for the Alco. Tne catalogue Is arll-tlcallv destined and Is being re ceived with much interest - being used to such severe weather, many motorists failed to provide against It until It was too late, and aa a consequence there were a num ber of cracked cylinders and radiators to be repaired at Portland garages. In almost every instance where damage was done to the motor, the machine disabled was housed In a private ga rage. All public garage men had their employes mix an antl-freesa solution with the water poured Into the radi ator, thus preventing any - damage from the cold. When real Winter weather arrives. operators of automobiles must think more carefully concerning their motors. The difficulty In starling the motor when cold, together with tha liability of freeslng. la a troublesome feature. Tha modern self-starter may obviate the difficulty of cranking by hand. thereby savlcg much work on tha part of ths driver, but tha freeslng of ths motor cannot be prevented except by exerting great caution. Danger ef Freeslng Great. When tha mercury Is at the freeslng point the motor should not be left dead with the water In It. While there may be sufficient heat In the circulating system to prevent Immediate freeslng. It la only a question of a very short time, before this Is lost, due to ths great radiation area. Probably the radiator Is the most sensitive, pert of the csr. Hera the water Is purposely spread out Into tha sheets In order to obtain the proper cooling of the water under normal con ditions of temperature. However, In sero weather tha danger of freezing It much mora increased by having a large radiation area exposed. "In sero weather, which we are not likely to experience here. It Is Impera tive that an antl-freesing solution bs usea ir tne motor is to be exposed to ths eold when not running." declares Carl Landy, Oregon' distributor for tha barrord pleasure ears and trucks Stsaple Selwttom Beet. -ir tnis is not done, the water snouid ba drained from the lowest point In the system. After allowing ine waier to drain tne engine should be started and run for a minute or two. In order further to dry out the parts. This, of course. Is Impractical except when the automobile la to stand In the eold for a long time. ' t best method for practical, pur poses is to use an anti-freezing solu tion consisting of alcohol, glycerine and water. a mixture of approximately ""-uuaner aiconoi. one-eighth glycer Ine and the rest water, will tn freeslng test of 10 degrees below lero. A few precautions are necessary In. using this solution. Ona Is that tha rubber boae connections must ba watched, since the glycerine and alco hol have a deteriorating effect. This I by no means serious, as tha hose eas ily can oe replaced. Another caution la carefully to watch ths solution In the cooling system. REPAIR SHOP PLAN IS IDEAL Portland Dealer's Method One Most Perfect In Country. of Howard Cover, Oregon distributor for tha Cadillac and Plerce-Arrow. has a hobby In perfecting the organization of tha mechanical end of his business. Mr. Covey has ona of the most com plete and best-equipped garages In ths United Slates and always Is Increasing facilities for the care of automobiles which are sent to him for repairs. Three floors of his building are de voted to. this work and the storage ef parts. Mr. Covey has 'devised a p!n of handling this work, which, while It undoubtedly will he improved. Is ssld to be one of the most perfect In ex istence. Ills main object Is to do away with "klcka" from his patrons, who sometimes become Imbued with the Idea that their repair bills ars far In ex cess of what they should be. To avoid this, he follows out a plan by which all work done en a car la kept together and can be had on a few moments' notice. When a customer registered a pro test against the aiz of his bill every detail of the work done Is placed' before him. The names of the mechanics who worked on the csr are placed on the slip, with a detailed account of what each did. If necessary the garage men are called In to explain to the owner Just why they had to spend so much time on certain work snd why the re placement of psrts was necessary.
