V V BOXING GUI BACK If 113 01 AGAIN Happy Days for Great Sport Once More Are Dawning in California. TURKEY FIGHTS POINT WAY Coffroth MilM Cood More by Vir tually Mati-hlng Ad Wolffnsl for Tiro rWiu t. Promoter Is Iflch With Administration. BT mRRT B. SMITH. SAX FRANCISCO, No. :S. (Special.) The flsMs scheduled In Fan Kran rliro and Angeles, respectively, for next Thursday afternoon are not the on'.jr onea to Indicate that the bojtlne; s-ame la on the upsrade In California. We are looking even further ahead than these matches would Indicate, and after reading what pugilism haa to offer, you probably admit there la reason In w hat Is said. Jimmy Coffroth. not satisfied with having rehabilitated the came to a rertain extent. Is rea-hlns; after more. While he was In Los Angeles last week, ha made a tentative offer to Ad Wolcast that sounds very rood from a local standpoint. He offered the champion certain financial induce ment for two matches the first with Knockout Prown on News Year's day. and the second with I'acky McFarland on Washington's birthday. Coffroth refuses to disclose the mon ey that he Is prepared to hand over to Wolgast. but for the two bouta It is a certainty that he wouldn't go un der the J.'S.OOO mark and perhaps more, alor.u with the movlnir-plcture Inducements. offrvf h Neils Mstrles. The original scheme had been for Wolsast to fight MrFarland on the first of the year, but CoWroth. after thinklnc It over, decided it would be a better s-'heme to prolong the tourn ament. Knockout Mrown has never been West and would therefore be a rood drawing card, by putting off the MrKarland - Wolcast match. there would be much more time, to work up Interest In the big bout, and that In terest Is needed to make the match a great affair from the standpoint of the bo office. Tom Jones has the offer under consideration and has promised an answer the middle of this comtnff week. CofTrnth s.iys he thinks that Jones will accent snd when Coffroth makes a statement of that nature, you can rest assured that he is well satisfied with rond'tlots. It .okc I for a time as If the Wol-anst-Freddie Welsh match In the .-ioiilh wmiM be declared off for want of a referee, but when It came to a shnndnwn. Freddie Welsh capitulated. A I! a Ions he had declared that he wouldn't stand for Jack Welsh, of Han Francis. o. us the referee. Ills man- rr. lUron I."ng. who was n J-an I -ram -Lira, added fuel to the flames by t'-lling the newspaper men a few words every d.v and irsistlnK that unless sme other refeiee was named, there wocld be no flvht. V4 el.k Gets Caastle. on t.p of all this ml up. Jack Welsh injected tilms-lf Into the trou ble. He was sore all over because his name had been bandied about and the thine he said about Kiron Lena; were wortn listening to. lie called the itiron a nincompoop, a boob and a few other choice names. Me went further and referred to Freddie Welsh as a parlor boxer. -Why. I would go to South Africa to referee a match for Wolgast." he continued 'lies the champion and he's entitled to a fair deal. 1 I referred the war Welsh wants me to, Wolsast wouldn't hav one chance In 100 " And all the newspaper men admitted t:at It looked aa If Jack Welsh were prejudiced. In s;ite of which, and Just a day later. Welsh accepted him. in explaining the matter. Welsh said the referee was not to his own liking and all that, but rather than lose his chance at the title, lie would aeept any man In the world. Which agreement, you can rest as sured relieved Tom McCarey. who had been wondering all the time where tie was ajnlns; to pet oft. Xle arey Nerve. You've got to hand It to I'ncle Tom M Carey for his nerve In handling; tnis match. He has guaranteed the scrappers ti.3'0 between them, to say nothing of a lot of outside ex pense. To cover all that he has de cided to Increase his ticket prices. The cheapest seat will he J5 and all those will be In the blencher section. Then he runs up to $19 for the reserved scats and 1:0 for the boxes. When you bear In mind that the bleacher seats for the Jeffries-Johnson flghL the biggest a.ivertlsed af fair of Its kind ever held, only went to $10. yon have some very good Idea of what the stand taken by McCarey means. Most of his fights have been with a dollar bleacher and It Is a question whether that crowd will pay the extra It. It Is a whole lot of money, when yen stop and consider what It would buy. Cnffrnth bring word back that Wol cast will probably be a 10 to 4 favorite over Welsh, but adds that Freddie looks to be In exceptionally ood shape. Probably the Welshman haa trained faithfully for the match, but you can't make many Pan Franciscans hcl'eve that he haa a punch hard er.ouch to hurt Ad or to stop the Oer man from coming In. MeFarlaad la ConHnenl. of course, he might win. for outsid ers frequently turn that trick, but he certainly doesn't look the part, if his former showing In this city against Mattv Baldwin l to be considered. McFarland arrived here the first of the week to (i Into training for his hunt w Uh Harlem Tommy Murphy In Sa Fmnelsco next Thursday after- I noon, Both men have been aeen here I hefore but the bout Is apparently a I lopsided afa.r. Nearly every one thinks that McFurlund will win about i he pleases. In fact. If one Is to Judge from the war the Chicago boy Is going through his training, he also considers Murphy anything but a touch proposition. Just at present McFarland's mind la centered on the possibilities of a match with WolKast. -The reason that I was anxious to come to San Francisco." he said, -"was to prove to the lii'H fans that I have a riffat to meet Woluast. I can make the welc-it all ritht. Very frankly. I don't care to make weight unless It la an object, but In this rase I am clad of the opportunity. 1 have watched Wolsast enougn to be convinced that he will not bother me very much. He likes to net In and rough tt in the rllnchrs. Well, when he treats me In the ring he ran have all that clinching that he desires. I am a bear for that sort of stuff, myself. (folk Are High With Ralph. "The weight haa been agreed upon. It will be 113 pounds five hours before the contest and will be easy for me. I'm going to make US pounds for Murphy and will prove what I say." Tne new line-up of fight promoters will come after the first of the year when the new city administration goes Into office. So far aa can be learned from the gossip. Jimmy Coffroth. Kd dle Graney and Harry Foley will be among those honored. CofTroth stands very well with the Rolph people and so do Oraney and Foley, for that mat ter. Both of the latter two are well known In Portland. Oraney haa refer eed up there, while Foley had several fights In that section. Joe Thomas, the former welter weight champion of the world, shot his last bult In Oakland the other night. He was matched for a ten round affair with Frlta Holland, the Spokane middleweight. and It was about all that Thomas could do to last. Joe was knocked down In the first round and again In the second. It looked curtains, but he is as game aa ever and got on hla feet. Holland sadly lacks a heart. Otherwise he would have finished the San Francisco boy In no time. Ae It was. every time that Joe let go a punch. Holland backed away. Of course, he won the decision, but there wasn't a world of credit attached. Thomas hasn't been much good since he took several beatings at the hands of the late Stanley KetcheU Hla Judgment of distance, his speed and ability to take a beating were all gone the other night and ma showing wa a sorry one to those of u who have seen him perform In better days. Wrlslit Icfel Pnnlway. "Chick" Wright, the Taclflc Toast' premier balk-llne billiard player, gave an Interesting exhibition at the Com mercial Club last night In a ZOO-poInt game with W. C. tunlway. champion of the Northwest. Wright won 209 to 0 and took 15 Innings to play. After the game Wright gave an ex hibition of fancy shots, which brought great applause from the spectators. Several of the shots drew much laugh ter. After be exhausted hla repertorle of dazxllng shots, Wright expounded the principles of the game, showing the different waye of making ahota and the right way. ST. ANDREWS MEN ELECT K. K.
