WHAT MEDALLIONS ARE
The desire to perpetuate, in some artistic form, the
features of friends, is almost as old as civilization.
Until the photographic process was developed,
the only method of doing this was by painting the
portrait on canvas, porcelain or ivory, a process
slow and expensive and not sure to produce a faith
ful resemblance. But these hand-painted por
traits, especially the ivory and porcelain minia
tures, had a softness, a beauty, and, best of all, a
permanence that no photograph has yet attained.
But these portrait medallions are superior to
any hand work ever done in their faithful resem
blance to the original, for they are photographic
reproductions and have many of the advantages of
the porcelain or ivory miniature so far as concerns
