handles all our city deliveries, which
means a tremendous lot of travel and
the moving of a huge daily bulk. Then,
too. we occasionally switch It In to
rush Incoming shipment and other
emergenry work, with more satlsfsc
tory results than wo eould attain In
anr other way.
"Formerly we hired teams for alt
our city deliveries, paying a flat rate
per delivery which amounted tn a
dal'.y average of upwarda of 130. This
work and much more Is done by the
motor truck and at a considerable sav
ln. We have an expert chauffeur who
knws his machine thoroughly and is
conscientious. Till Is an Important
point, of course. In the practical utili
sation of motor truck service.
-As an Instance of the Incidental
work done by our White truck without
Interfering with Its regular delivery
business. I might mention an order
for a drumhead of gas. received a few
days ago.

"This Is something we do not handle
at a!L and under our old hired team-and-wagon
service, we would have
been compelled to send out a drav to
get and deliver the drumhead. That
would mean an expenditure of time
and money that would have reduced
the profit practically to nil. amounting
to nothing more than an accommoda
tion to our customer. But when wo
received the order tho other day wo
rushed the motor truck out between
deliveries and took ear of tho order
with promptness and dispatch, with no
extra expenditure at all. save poss'.bly

"Many of these orders for goods wo
do not handle come In over the tele
phone or by mall, and' It Is no trli k
at all for our motor truck to pick tip
the required material and set It down
without any Interference to the regu
lar deliveries. It would bo almost im
possible to estimate tho advantage
the two motor trucks have proven to
us. becsuse of the miscellaneous char
acter of the work they are doing every
day. But they have already become
Indispensable, and as tho firm's volume
of business Increase we will undoubt
edly add more auto vehicles. There
can bo no doubt whatever of their
great superiority over the horse-and-wason
for any kind of transportation."

Accident to Ml Gould's Auto
Ioen't Stop Plans.
Haste did not make waste In the
case of Miss Anna Gould. who was
obliged to decorate her Hudson tourtnir
car for thr Kose festival automobile
parade In -byf an iour. Miss Gould,
who Is an enthusiastic motorist, had
planned several weeks ahead to deco
rate her machine and arrangements had
been made. Her guests, the Miss Ko
wena Covhron, Miss Isabella Heikwlth
and Miss Jesse Beckwltn. had been in
vited to ride In the car.
Gowns had been made for the young
women and everything was In readi
ness when, the nttfht before the parade,
one of the axles of the machine was
broken. A broken axle Is more serious
than a puncture and after hours of
communication with garages It was
learned that, owing to the rush due to
festival week. It would he impossible
to gel the machine In condition for the
parade tho following day.
Help of a lone mechanic was finally
secured and with the assistance of the
two brothers of Miss Gould the ma
chine repaired and ready for use
at 1:34 the next afternoon. Just one
hour before the parade. Eight pairs of
enthusiastic hands were put In use at
once and in 3 minutes the machine
was a mass of yellow tarlatan and
Scotch broom.
Miss Gould reached the farming place
of the parade Just In time to get In the
line of march and through her quick
work and perseverance she took third
prise In class C. She is proud of her
cup. but feels that a great deal of the
credit Is due to the members of her
family and her guests who were so
thoughtful about helping her.

New Car Will Be Purchased at In
dianapolis Trip Will Include

Probably tho most emtenstve automo
bile trip to be taken by anyone In
America will be taken this year by Mr.
and Mrs. Kerd Oroner. of HMsboro. Mr.
Croner Is a land owner and business
man of Hlllsboro and Is an old resi
dent of Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Oroner
literally live In their car and are fa
miliar with every road In Oregon. Mr.
csroner has worn out an Oldsmoblle. a
Ford and a Bulck. Now he owns a Na
tional "to." or will own one as soon aa
he reaches the factory In Indianapolis.
Itefore the automobile became popular
Mr. Groner owned one of the first bi
cycles In the country, and has traveled
thousands of miles by bicycle.
The Oroners m-tll leave about July
10 and will go by way of Yellowstone
Park. Colorado Springs and Omaha to
Indianapolis, where they will get a new
car. They have a complete camp outfit,
which they know how to use. From In
dianapolis they go to Chicago, then
south on Iake Erie visiting Buffalo and
the near-by places of Interest. Next
they will cross to the Canadian side of
the falls and visit Montreal, passing
throuith the White Mountains to Bos
ton. fter seeing the surrounding coun
try they go south to Providence, New
York. Washington. Philadelphia and
Baltimore.
After viewing the points of Interest
at these cities, the line of travel will bo
toward Florida. Here, after seeing tha
state, tha Groners will leave their car
and take a trip to the Panama Canal.
Mr. Oroner is interested In the project.
Returning from the canal they will go
to California and then north to Oregon.
Mr. Groner expects to make on the
average 7J miles a day. and says he
wants to see everything of Interest. Ho
Is planning on getting another car as
soon as he reaches Oregon, because the
other will. In all probability, be worn
out. -The trip will take eight or nine
months and a car can not be expected
to hold up much longer than this un
der constant use and the conditions to
which It will bo exposed. Mr. Groner
will study roads In the East and tho
latest methods of Improving them.

At a meeting of the county road
officials Tuesday afternoon It was de
rided to purchasa two motorcycles to
be ridden by men whose duty shall be
to see that no extreme speeding Is
done on tha highways. The county
has been overlooking slight overspeed
Ing but tho roads are now In good
condition and the County Commission

H. W. Wemme was Instrumental In
engaging motorcycle guards against
speed. The county officials are In
quest of competent motorcycle riders

The W. N. Jones family made a trip
lo Jefferson City. Or., last week and
found the roads In exceptionally good
condition. Robert Jones drove the
machine, which Is a Pope-Hartford.

Every city on the Pacific Coast Is ex
pected to have delegates at this meet
ing. Vancouver and Victoria, B. C, and
many cities on Puget 8ound have al
ready agreed to send delegations to
Portland to help make the annual good
roads convention of the Pacific Coast
association a real success.
Officials of tho Pacific Highway As
sociation will attempt to Induce tha
automobile club of Heattle to make one
of Its club runs on this date, so at least
10 machines will come to Portland. The
highway between Puget- Sound and
Portland la now in splendid condition.
A widespread interest In the Pacific
Highway Association will mean a good
representation from all towns along tha
route, and California Is expected' to
send a delegation from those towns In
cluded In tho pacific Highway Assoe'a
tlon plans.
New officers will be slacted at tha
Portland meeting and plans outlined
for tho coming year's work. A com
plete report will bo made by tha old
officers as to what has been done since
the organisation was formed laat Fall.
Tha convention will be held In the
convention hall of the Portland Com
mercial Club. A oomplete programme
will b given out in tho next few
weeks, which will Include for speakers
some of tha most prominent good roads
workers on tha Pacific Coast. The lime
of th convention will bo about equally
divided between buslnsss sessions and
meetings where set speeches will pre
vail. According to representatives of tha
Pacific Highway Association who have
been over the international routs
through Oregon, Washington and Cali
fornia, roads are SO per cent better than
last year. In view of thla fact, it Is
believed a large number of motorists
will drive to Portland for tha conven
tion. Homer Ross, supervisor of tha Pes
chutes National Forest Reserve, who
has lived In Portlsnd for several
months past, recently drove an automo
bile from Portland to his Summer home
at Prineville. Or. In a letter to Mel G.
Johnson, manager of the Howard Au
tomobile Company, Mr. Ross describes
his journey undertaken by himself and
wife as not an altogether pleasant one,
although accomplished In their Buick
"4" roadster.
The Journey was undertaken by way
of Kllcaitat County. Washington, and
Mr. Ross writes that in one day he
passed three automobiles with teams
hitched to them being pulled through
the mud. "There was nothing doing In
the team line for our '40' In the mud."
said Mr. Ross, "altnough when wo
reached the sand drifts of Central Ore
gon we were forced to enlist the aid of
horses several times."
J. il. Tetherow, a capitalist of Grants
Pass., Or., accompanied cy his brother-in-law,
G. L. Taylor, were Portland vis
itors a week ago. While here both
purchased automoMlea from the How
ard Automobile Company. Mr. Tetherow
taking a 40-horaepower National, while
Mr. Taylor purchased a S&-horsepower
Bulck touring car. Tho National pur
chased by Mr. Tetherow Is the first of
that kind In Southern Oregon.

Two Cadillac cars, starting simultaneously, successfully lowered two of the most dif
ficult road records in California. !
One Cadillac, starting from San Francisco at midnight, June 3d, and another Cadillac
car' starting from Los Angeles at the same time, annexed the following records:
One Cadillac beat all previous existing records from San Francisco to Del Monte and
return. Distance 260 miles;. time, 6 hours 30 minutes averaging 40 3-10 miles per hour, and
lowering the former records by 1 hour and 5 minutes.
This is the most-sought-after and best-known record in Northern California, and tho
lowering of the record by 1 hour 5 minutes is the sensation of the season.
"The Car That Did It"
Another Cadillac, starting from Los Angeles on the path-finding trip for the Los Ange-les-to-Phoenix
road race, incidentally broke all previous records from Los Angeles to San
Diego. Distance, 158 miles; time, 4 hours, 10 minutes.
By lowering these two records the CADILLAC now
holds more Road Records in California, than all other makes
of cars combined.

Considerable adverse comment hat
been aroused among automoblllsls con
cerning the Oregon and of the route
marked for the Pacific Highway from
Seattle to Portland. C. A. Eastman,
manager of tha White Motor Car Com
pany, of Portland, voleea the sentiment
of local enthusiasts as follows:
'Tha criticism Involves the last 30
miles of the trip ending at Portland."
says Mr. Eastman, "the pilot of the
party evidently being misled by the
Idea that there was only one ferry
across tha Lewla River, when in faot
there are two one above Woodland
and one below it. Very naturally, he
took the one above Woodland, which
leads Into Portland across the foot
hills, taking the traveler continually
up and down hill, consuming an hour
longer than necessary and marking a
road inferior In every way to tha one
which was originally proposed.
"Instead of crossing the ferry north
of Woodland and taking the road over
the foothills through La Center, the
pilot should have continued on from
Woodland In a southwesterly direction,
crossing Lewis River at what Is known
as the Pekin ferry; and from there fol
lowing the long-distance telephone line
which strikes the uplands one-half mile
after crossing the ferry and furnishes
good going all the way into the city.
"Another matter which demands at
tention by the Commissioners of Clark
and Cowllta counties la the matter of
