BUSINESS BEGINS .TODAY
Captain Macrman V. Short, Pear
ton, Mkhsrl Moran and J. L.
Smith Are Mrrobers of N
Marine tnterprl-.
Recent event tbat have shaped
themselves toward the formation of a
company of Independent pilots on the
Willamette and Columbia Rivers. In op
position to 11 cicerone who have con
ducted the business of handling deep
water vessels on both streams for
years, crystallised yesterday, and to
morrow there will be formally launched
the new business with headquarters on
l ouch-treel dock. The first to partici
pate In the competing pilotage will be
Captain Sherman V. Short, until Thurs
day master of the 0.-W. R. & N. steam
er Elmore; Captain Pearson, master of
the port of Portland teamer Ockla
hama. who will leave the vessel as soon
as a successor la named; Captain
illchael Moran. of the Hale & Kern
fleet, and Captain J. L. Smith, of the
Shaver fleet.
"We have secured business lu ad
vance and promises of more. For the
present there will be four of us to
handle vessels." said Captain Short yes
terday. "Our headquarters at Astoria
will be on the Callendar dock and at
least for a time we will be located here
on Cpper Couch-street dock. I was
formerly a roemher of the local harbor,
as were others of our party, and an ef
fort was made to Join the other pilots,
but It was not successful, so we decided
to start In business Independently."
As there It a fleet of coastwise ves
sels calline; here that averages over 50
a month and during the busy Summer
and Fall season i materially added to.
the Independents believe t'lat there 1
an abundant field for their labors,
whllo In addition are many offshore
vessels, the steamers always requlrlntt
pilots and aatling vessels infrequently
employing them, particularly when
msklnjc harbor moves In tow of other
than port of Portland steamers.
t mil last Fall and for about a year
preeedlnc that period, there were In
dependent pilots operating between As
toria and the sea In opposition to the
Iort of Portland service, but the latter
authorised a reduction of one-half in
It rates and the Independents consent
ed to have their names inscribed on
tr port of Portland payroll. On the
river there has been no a-overnlna- body
In the work other than the band of
pilots who have enjoyed a monopoly of
the trade and pooled their Interests, so
It has been the general assumption that
dividends were heavy. The San Fran
cisco Portland Steamship Company,
Portland Astatic Steamship Company,
Associated Oil Company and Union Oil
Company employ pilots on monthly sal
aries, but the steam schooner fleet and
vessels plytns; to Oreiron ports have

SPKCIAL TO PRIZE-CHECK
WIXKERS.
Do Tre take prize checks or contest
awards as part payment on pianos and
player pianos during our closing1 -out
sale? Many pepple ha-e imagined that
because of the already deep cuts in our
prices, that such checks would not be
honored by us now.
Several people, we find, who have
pianos of their own to sell have stated
to holders of prize checks that these
awards would not be honored by
Eilers Music House. This is not the
case. If you have a valid credit check
or certificate, bring it to this sale.
We shall accept it as part payment on
nearly every piano or player piano,
regardless of the low prices now pre
vailing. Our special arrangement with, the
numerous piano manufacturers who
believe in this up-to-date method of
bringing their instruments prominent
ly to the attention of the actual buyer
makes it possible for us to redeem
every certificate whether it he for $50
or even $125. Rest assured that every
condition upon which such checks have
been issued will be complied with by
Eilers Music House. A prize check is
as good aa eu much cash at Eilers
Music House, when applied according
to its terms. .
As previously announced, we are also
accepting bona fide checks, no matter
to whom they may be payable or by
whom they may be issVjed, allowing
full face value for same.
GRAND PIAXOS AXD FLAYER

Cheap pianos are always cheap, but

TRUST SAYS IT'S VIRTUOUS
Harvester Company Denies
Any
AVronff Done in Missouri.
. " r ol. ' - ,. . 7!
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.. March 25.
In its brief tiled in the Supreme Court
today in the case brought by the Gov
ernment to oust it from the state of
Missouri, the International Harvester
Company complained that while Special
Commissioner Brace's report showed
the company had done no injurious acts
in the state, he nevertheless held It an
illeiral combination.
Theodore Brace is the special com
missioner appointed to investigate the
affairs of the company. The brief said
that Brace reported the company had
not charged unfair prices, nor restricted
dealers, yet he decided the company's
form of organization to be illegal.
In the brief the company presented
evidence from 73 Missouri retailers to
prove that competition in its line of
business had not been restrained. It
further demanded credit for having: in
vited the fullest investigation. .

NOT A REMOVAL SALE.
We don't term this sale a removal
sale. It's not to save the few dollars
of cartage money necessary to move
our stock from one block to the other.
We are moving into the finest premises
ever provided for the musical instru
ment trade. We want to commence
there with an entirely new stock.
We close our doors at 353-5 Wash
ington, and reopen next morning in
jthe new building when it is ready.
If you recognize this fact, you will
understand that we realize the neces
sity for merciless price-cutting, mak
ing prices so low that to see an in
strument is to buy it.
No wonder this sale is attracting
attention from far and wide. Our
community is prosperous. Our people
have money to invest. There's hardly
a home that cannot now afford the
very best obtainable in the way of a
musical instrument.
Many people are coming to this sale
from places hundreds of miles away
because neighbors and relatives have
saved big round sums of money on the
purchase of a piano or a player piano
or talking machine during this cloeing
out sale.
Good news travels fast. If ever good
news was sent forth, substantial
money-saving news, it was the an
nouncement of the closing out of the
entire Eilers stock. Irastic measures
are being taken to sell every piano,
upright or grand, player pianos, pipe
organs, records, parlor organs, and
many talking machines. Prices have
been cut on everything, and cut deep.
STORE OPEN EVENINGS.
If you cannot come in the daytime,
do so in the evening. Our store will be
