10 THE SUNDAY OREGOXIAy. PORTLAND, AUGUST 21. 1910. U 1 1 LAST YEAR DOUBLED NO-RENT PRICES REDUCED 25 PER CENT When our very low, NO-REST PRICES are cut 25 percent it is equivalent to a 40 per cent reduction on the prices of the average furniture markings. Our goods are not so priced that they can be cut so very deep-no matter how big a special bargain we wish to give. Recently one of our 25 per cent reductions was transposed when put into tvpe and appeared as a 52 per cent reduction on one article. Notwithstanding the fact that it was a typographical error, we sold a few pieces at the price named, but, of course, we lost heavily on the sale, merely to deliver the goods as advertised, which is our settled policy and which has prospered us. During our August clearance sale many articles are reduced 25 per cent, and it will pay you to keep a close watch on our ads. ; . S25Q.000 IS PAID Land of Macleay Estate West of City Sold. TRACT WILL BE PLATTED Beauty of Situation Will Be En hanced by Work of Landscape Engineer Before Sites for Fine Homes Are Put on Market. All the beautlfu land comprised in the holdings of the Macleay estate, ly ing west of the city next the LadJ Canyon farm, has been sold to a syndl-, cate of prominent Portland men for ap proximately a quarter of a million dollars. "From the Humphrey boulevard north to the Mountalnvlew tract is a strip of land about two miles long and from 1000 to 1500 feet wide that in four pieces comprised all the land deeded to Donald Macleay by J. C Alnsworth with the exception of that part deeded to the City of Portland and known as Macleay Park. This is taken over by the syndicate, together with 32.8 acres in Glenview, comprising tracts 1 to 15, inclusive. Al together there are 254 acres in the pur chase, and the average price by the acre is sa'd to be about $1000. W. B. Streeter negotiated the deal for the syndicate. This land was picked out by Donald Macleay at a time when he had his choice of practically anything west of the city In this vicinity. He regarded It as the most beantiful of all the land thereabout, for it is picturesquely sit uated, with hills and dales, and on cer tain points a view unsurpassed in the whole country can be had. From some vantage points the whole city can be seen spread out to the east. with the mountains In the distance, and the Columbia and Willamette Rivers winding through the picture. In the other direction the fertile plains stretch out, splotched with timber and dotted with farms. Beginning at the Humphrey boule vard, the Tract is crossed In turn by the Canyon, Barnes and Cornell roads. Transportation from the city will be an easy matter as soon as the line of the United Railways, which is now be ing constructed, is finished. This be gins at a point on Kings Heights and is to run at first to Mount Calvary cemetery, with the possibility of a con tinuation into the rich country beyond, toward GHencoe. ' This tract is to be platted, but before this is done, and any of it sold, a land scape engineer ' is to be employed to lay out the tract in sites to conform to the contour of the bills and valleys. No lots, with their baneful regularitj of form, will be sold here. The division will be made into building sites, the size of each depending largely, upon the conditions of the ground, and when it is put on the market, a date which is not yet announced, it will offer as fine places for high-class country homes as can be found in the Northwest. Cost Will Be Over $250, 0C0 and Is Part of $1,500,00 to Be Spent by P. R., Ii. & P. ' . Work is being hurried on the super structure of the auxiliary power plant of the Portland 'Railway, Light & Power. Company at the foot of East Lincoln street, Just north of the In-man-Poulsen sawmill. For the ma chinery a solid concrete basement has been built, about 100x100 feet, with a concrete floor that rests on 1500 piles, driven - as closely as possible. This floor is three feet deep. All this is walled in on ' the four -sides to keep out the water when the river is hl-jh and here will be placed the boile'rs, engines and dynamos of the auxiliary plant.. Already the boil ers have arrived and will be lowered . into the machinery .room as soon as possible. Some of the dynamos have also been received. -The chimney is of concrete and rises about 150 feet high from the machinery room. The steel frame of the main building, above the machinery room, is now being raised. This plant will be one of the largest auxiliary power plants in the state. It will have a capacity of 10,000 horse power at the start, which can be in creased as desired. Its cost will be abova $250,000, and is. only part of the improvements the street railway com pany is making on the East Side. . Besides the erection of this auxiliary power plant the company Is spending more than $1,000,000 in relaying Its double tracks and making extensions. Hard-surface pavements have been laid on many streets, which necessitated re laying heavy steel rails. . The street improvement districts have hit the street railway company in all direc tions. ' The largest single improvement pro gramme is in the South East Side, where the Waverly-Richmond and Woodstock lines are to be made wide I gauge and the cars on those branches I routed over the new Hawthorne bridge. 4.
