Of the total of 120 permits Is sued, 48 -were for homes. Most of these are of the cheaper class, less thati 15000. A few residences to cost up to $10,000 were begun, however. Better Buildings to Replace Frame Structures DestroyedSales of Home Sites Active. Most of the owners of the buildings which were destroyed by the recent fire In Montavilla will rebuild as soon as possible. At present', however, the Insurance is being: adjusted, but when this has been finished the question of rebuilding will be taken up. Better .buildings will be erected and concrete and brick are being considered. Leander Lewis, who owns 100 feet each way on the corner facing the Base Line road, is considering erecting a fine modern building. Property on the Base Line road In Montavilla is becoming very valuable for this is the business center of that suburb. C. W. Davis, who recently bought a 10-acre tract on East Eighty-third street and Villa avenue from John Car mod y, has started four modern houses, to cost from $1500 to I2B0O each, as an investment. Mr. Davis will build a number of residences on this tract during the present year. A. Blood, of New York, has purchased five lots in this same tract for $2500 as a speculation, mostly on the chance that the Mount Hood Railroad will pass near. In this neighborhood, which lies to the east of Montavilla, Is much ac tivity in building outside of Mr. Davis' tract, and many sales have been made to homebullders. ' Residents of Montavilla are circulat ing a petition for the establishment of a fire station on East Eightieth street, midway between the Base Line road and Villa avenue, where an engine can reach all parts of the district promtply. There is one large schoolhouse in Montavilla at present of 16 rooms and another is to be built, south of the Base Line road. Twohy Bros, have made a large in vestment "in North Montavilla, where they purchased 17 acres and where they will establish headquarters for their large outfit of horses, wagon and vehicles of all sorts. That the suburb will grow rapidly there is no doubt, and need of the fire protection la strongly urged. William DeVeny is pushing the matter, with much energy. - - Although Aberdeen Is the home of Scotch STacite. a hiPment of 330 tons recently was exported to that city from South Carolina Quarries to meet a demand for a variation 1a color from the native stone.
