3 THE SUNDAY , OREGOXUX, PORTLAND, NOVEMBER 21, 1909. T Manager of Portland Team Says Actio.-f Depends on What Others Do. GOOD FAITH IS DOUBTED McCredie Believes Spokane Mag nates Are Only Ones Who Would Stick In Case of Hard fought Baseball War. BT W J. PETBAJX. Walter H. McCredie, manager and part owner of the Portland Paoiflo Coast League baseball team, arrived home yesterday after baring attended the meeting of the National Asaocla tion of Professional Baseball Leagues at Memphis, Tana. and. aside from an nouncing that Pearl Casey would play econd base and captain the Portland team in the Pacific Coast League, be had nothing new to offer. That he is disDlease with the treat ment accorded Portland by the Pacific Coast League Is evident, but aa he has long felt an aversion for the Ewlng Kerry crowd, there is nothing surpris ing in Walter's. attitude. Whenaakedif lie favored outlaw baseball, he replied that he would be ready for it at any time that the Northwestern League xuttgnatea felt inclined to break affilia tion with organised ball. Walter, how ever, expressed a doubt as to the sin cerity of the Northwestemers In pro posing the outlaw scheme, for, in his estimation. Joe Cohn and the Spokane l-aHgnaies sre the only ones likely to sti.-k in the case of a hard-fought baseball war. Good Team Is Promised. As to his team next year. Walter says he will have one good one or two j-ood ones, just as the outcome of the present situation provides. lie does not eem unduly excited over the ac tion of the Coasters in refusing to al low rortland two teams, for he says that Is all that could be expected from that ouifit." as ho terms the San Francisco clique. I don't think there will be an out law ledKue here next season," said Walter in response to a query, "for I d -n't believe any of the Northwestern inacnat-s will care to stick through a war .inch as will undoubtedly be waged If wc should cut loose from the association. As far as the Pacific 1'i.ast League is concerned In Its pres ent form. 1 am sick and tired of the whole outfit, for they have never done anything else but rub It Into Portland at everv opportunity. As to what polirv Portland will pursue I cannot ay until 1 have had time to discuss the matter thoroughly with my uncle, Judge McCredie. Waller then Joined in a fanning bee with Pearl Casey. Ote Johnson. Speck" -Urkness. Jesse Garrett. John B&ssey and Howard Guyn. all of whom form a por tion of the colony of talltosssrs who are wintering In Portland. McCredie brought greetings to the Portland fans from Jay A. Andrew." Charley Shields and "Dea con'iJtm McGuire. the latter being man Hirer of the Cleveland American League team, and was in Portland for several weeks last Summer. Players Anxious to Come West. Charley Shields begged McCredie to buy Ms release from Memphis, as he would like to return to the Pacific Coast. Sev eral other balltossers, who have become sickened of the heat of the South, also importuned the Portland manager to get them away from that country. McCredie save the Southern League expected a bad season last year, and quietly hinted that Jie expected to secure several good men for the Portland club by means of pur chase or trades. Walter McCredie spent a week in Cleve land and was the guest of Jim McGuire while there. During this time they talked over a number of transactions which may have a bearing on Portland's chances for the pennant next season. Until next Feb ruary, when the waivers have been se cured on several of the players on whom McCredie has options, he will be unable to announce their names, for when it is known some club Is desirous of a player, another major club may refuse to waiver. Judge Too Busy to Talk. Congressman McCredie came over from Vancouver yesterday afternoon, but aside from stating that he had not heard from Dave Dugdale and also that ho had been too busy straightening up his affairs be fore leaving for Washington to discuss baseball, he was able to offer nothing of Interest to the fans. "I expect to hear from Dug very soon," said Judge McCredie. ,-and when I do I will probably make a trip to Seattle for a conference with him. During the past few days I have been too busy straighten 'ng up my affairs before departing for W ashington. D. C, to take much interest tn baseball." DAILY METEOROLOGICAL REPORT. PORTLAND.
