While it has been supposed ever sin-.e
it became known that t:.e Great North
ern was behind the Oregon Trunk Line
Uiat a bridge connection 'across the Co
lumbia would be made with the North
Far.k Road, the first admission that such
was the plan was made at the Oregon
Trunk Line offices yesterday.
The Oregon Trunk Line s survey has
now ben located from the. mouth of the
Deschutes down the Columbia for a dis
tance of several miles. The original sur
vey came out of the Deschutes Canyon
about the level of the present O. R. &
N. main line. In order lo get over the
Government and Moody dam sites. In the
Deschutes Canyon, the line has been re
located higher up the hank and now
leaves the mouth of the Dei-chutes at a
point about 70 fct above the O. R. & N.
main line. South of the present O. R.
N. bridse across the Deschutes about
half a mile a promontory will be tun
neled. Workmen are now boring this
tunnel, which Is to be about ?) feet long.
Selection or Bridge Site irflcult.
Paralleling- the O. R. & N. southward
for several miles the Oregon Trunk 1,'ne
is higher up the cliffs of the Columbia
River gorge, gradually dropping until ap
proximately the level of the O. R. at N.
is reached near Celilo. Th? selection of
the bridge site Is a difficult matter, as
the current of the Columbia is swift In
that locality and systematic soundings
must be made.
While the point of the crossing of the
Columbia has not been definitely detr
mlned. it is now thought likely the bridge
will be located either near Celilo or what
Id known as Five-Mile Run.
It Is the intention of the Oregon Trunk
IJn builders to have the road completed
and In operation to Madras within 18
months, or by about April 1. 1911. The
Columbia bridge will be about one year
In huilding. and It Is the expectation that
it will be completed so that trains can
run through between Portland and Mad
ras with the completion of the road up
the Deschutes.
Speed Is Main Object.
In the Deschutes Canyon speed In
construction work is being given
strong consideration. It is probable
that, in order to complete the road
within 1 months, the line will avoid,
temporarily, tunnels that would reduce
the curves. In other words, extensive
rock or tunnel work will not be per
mitted to delay the completion of the
. lino if such work can be avoided and
still a good line established. Subse
quently, tunnels that will straighten
the line and reduce cost of operation,
but which to build now would delay
opening the road, will be constructed.
The length of road when completed
to Madras will be 109 miles. In the
meantime, surveying, and perhaps con
itruction work beyond Madras will
rontinue. and the road will be extended
as conditions warrant.
Counting surveying crews, adminis
tration forces and laborers, about 2000
men are now at work along the line of
construction. These forces are being
added to daily.
Destroying an Agnostic's Work.
Kenosha. Wis., Despatch.
Lewis Knapp, a late pioneer resident of
Kenosha, who erected a series of In
scribed monument In the Kenosha City
Cemetery to hand down his derision of
the Christian Church, will fail of his
purpose, as .It Is now announced that
eight monuments which have stood In
the cemetery for more than 30 years will
be taken down and destroyed. The raging-
of them will be done In such a
manner that not one of the 20.0W words
of Inscriptions on the metallic columns
will remain.
For yeara Knapp worked on the ag
nostic Inscriptions for the monuments,
and when they were completed they made
up one of the most rema'rkable arraign
ment of the Christian religion known to
history. Men have come thousands of
miles to read and copy the strange In
scriptions, and it Is declared that when
they were sent to a foundry to be cast
upon monuments of a metal which would
withstand fire as well as the natural ef
fects of the elements, the men working
In the foundry went on a strike because
they feared that the handling; of such
matter would call down the wrath of
God upon them.
Tha surviving relatives of Knapp are
not in sympathy with many of his beliefs
and they hare signed an agreement that
the monuments be taken out, broken into
small pieces and the debris either buried
or thrown Into the lake. .

The prke is not announced. The clos
ing of the deal means e sale of from

It Is said the greater portion of these
apples will go to Liverpool and Glas
gow, although some will remain In the
markets In the eastern part of the
United States. This is one of the larg
est apple. deals ever made In this valley.

Shortage of Sailors Adds to
Troubles of Craft.
Meyer. Wilson Co. yesterday filed
libel proceedings against the French
bark Babin Chevaye, in the sum of
J6000. alleged to be due for damaged
cargo. In the complaint it Is set forth
that cargo discharged at Portland from
the French craft and consigned to
Meyer, Wilson & Co., was damaged by
salt water and bad storage to the
amount named In the libel. As a re
sult, the vessel will not sail for several
days.
The Babin Chevaye arrived at Port
land August 27 from Antwerp with

United Kingdom and cleared Thursday.
Libel proceedings are not the only
trouble which besets the master of the
French bark. He Is short of sailirs. and
until he has received a full complement,
he will be unable to leave Portland
harbor. Of late sailors have' been de
serting from French craft, and masters
are In the same class with captains of
vessels flying other flags than the tri
color. Several foreign Consuls have un
dertaken to supply ships with crews
and do away with the services of the
pallor boarding-house. The state law
governing the shipment of sailors lias
become a dead card, and now the al
leged protectors of the abused sailor
are tip against it to provide men for
the Babin Chevaye.

Inspectors Edwards and Fuller Will
Proceed to Coos Bay.
Inspectors Edwards and Fuller, of the
United States steamboat Inspection
service, will, leave Wednesday evening
on the steamship Breakwater to inves
tigate the sinking p the steamer Alert
off Marshfleld by the steamship Break
water. Clerk Arthur Merrill will ac
company the Inspectors.

tober 8. The Breakwater whistled to
pass to starboard, but the pilot of the
Alert failed to heed the signal, and the
ocean craft struck her just forward of
amidships. Captain Maegenn. of the
Breakwater, pushed the damaged craft
onto the mudflats.
Marine News of Astoria.
ASTORIA. Or.. Oct. 16. (Special.) The
steamer Falcon, which sailed last night
for San Francisco, loaded 12,978 cases of
salmon here en route to New York. The
salmon was shipped by the Columbia
River Packers" Association and the Al
toona Packing Company.
While the Norwegian steamer Christian
Bors, which arrived this morning, was en
route down the coast from Nanaimo, B.
('., Friday morning, one of the members
of the Chinese crew died from hemor
rhage of the lungs. On arrival here. Cap
tain Hills engaged Coroner Gilbaugh, who
went to Portland on the steamer and will
embalm the body, which will be taken to
Shanghai, China, for Interment.

The Norwegian steamship Christian

Mayor Simon and City Engineer Morris
are opposed to macadam and gravel
