Bates Completes Two-Story Eight-Room House at Beaurotr by Working After Hours. Big Saving Results. "in every work that he began he did It with all hla heart and prospered.- Out at Beaavolr. on the Woodstock line, a two-story, eight-room house stands as a monument of his energy and Ingenuity, not a crooked nail or a plank out of plumb suggesting that most of the home-building was done In the light or the moon or In the raya of a lantern the newspaper man held as he hammered. Three years ago last May day. Mr. Bates, prompted by the pleadings of his brave little wife, bought two lots in Beaavolr. and. paying the first Install ment the family, consisting of father, mother and tiny daughter, moved into a cottage across the street from the home site. Then Mr. Bates, possessing less than FO. bought two barrels of cement, a load of gravel and sand, a meager sup ply of lumber and began his self-appointed task. He mixed the cement him self, receiving a few suggestions from his neighbor, a carpenter, but in the main, from basement to roof, the home construction was managed by the news paper man. ' His work In watching, reporting and editing the market news for The Tele gram engaging him from 7: o'clock in the morning until 4 o'clock in the after noon. Mr. Bates was forced to rely on his after hours and free Sundays to com plete his task. But with persistence he labored steadily, passing the nights of three Winters in carpentering, frequently working in moonlight and as often swing ing a lantern on his free arm to guide his amateur hands. In eight months three rooms of the Fates house were completed and the family, in the meantime augmented by the arrival of a little son. abandoned the cottage across the street to occupy the Incompleted, but "their own." home. In the bitter cold of New Year's day, 19ns, Mr. Bates and his family were housed in the structure and from that time until Its completion last month all manner of hardships were undergone by father, mother and children without one day's sickness resulting. . Vnflinchingly for three years Mr. Bates continued his task, not enjoying one day of rest from the time the foundation of the home was laid until the close of last month, when the work of construction was pronounced sufficiently complete to warrant a few hours of surcease now and then. But at no time in the last three years has Mr. Bates been Idle, for when his self-built home was roofed in Inclement weather and at times when his bones ached, he devoted his time to the manu facture of furniture. His energy and astuteness in this line made It possible for him to complete all the furniture re quired for the five rooms of the first story of his home. Everything in the house but the hltchen range and the car pets was shaped by the hands of the .newspaper man. Furniture bearing the bright finish, evenness and well-curved lines of the best type as made by Mr. Bates Include a sideboard, a table, ball rack, window seats, bookcases and many pieces of bric-a-brac . Kir was used In the manufacture of all the furniture. Complete, the Bates home stands one block east of Hellman Station on the Woodstock line on a site that makes Eeauvolr worthy of Its name. The home commands a magnificent view of the heights, mountains and city, and every detail of the building and the Improve ment of the grounds surrounding it maka It ona of the most sightly homes of the abort. The house occupies 40 by H feet and from the exterior aa adequate estimate, of its atae cannot well be made. R. & who took the part of one of the cogwheels In- the scheme, has received a report showing that the plan is working out and the desired result is being attained. At 7 o'clock on March 25. 1909, B. F. Marquis, of Omaha, and B. Ol Snufer and Dr. R- R. Hamilton, of Klamath Kalis, started from Lake Side Inn, sit uated on the Klamath River at Klam ath Falls and whipped the river (or a distance of three fourths mile with or dinary fishing tackle, and after five hours' angling returned to the hotel with a string of 19 trout that weighed 103 4 pounds. The weight of the larg est trout was 8U pounds. Then the three men had their pio firei taken showing the llsh strung along a pole and attached the photo graph to a letter relating the crrcum srances. Four copies of this letter were prepared and each letter sent to a friend with the request to pass it along to his best sport-loving friend, and for tfceJaUer to send It along, and two-large porches and a balcony deceiv ing one into believing it is not an ex traordinary home. But a view inside shows eight commodfous rooms, five in the lower story and three above. Mr. Bates regards his home as it stands as worth WX and figures that by its construction he has been enabled to save half of his salary, which, if he had con tinued to pay rent, would have gone a-glimmerlng. SAMSON IS OUTCLASSED Biblical Giant Xot as Strong as Arthur Saxon, of Berlin. From Berlin. Germany, comes a man, Arthur Saxon by name, who declares he Is stronger than Samson. Saxon ad mits he never pulled a temple down, but he can lie on his back and with his feet support a plank upon which stand 12 men. while with his hands and arms he supports two other men and a pair of 500-pound dumbbells. Saxon is one of a trio of brothers who amazed ail Europe last Winter by a series of exhibitions they gave in the various capitals. Two of them form the pillars of a bridge over which passes an automobile with eight pas sengers. Another of the big features is Eobli dello, the Mexican wire wizard. The most difficult feat ever performed by a wire walker in America in the past Is too trivial for Roblidello to bother with. He actually falls down on the wire, dances, stands on his head and staggers over the slender cord In Imi tation of a belated clubman who has dined too well. The wonderful Schumann stallions are another of Ringllng Brothers' im portations. These animals walk on roll ing barrels, actually drink out of glass es, lifting them without any assist ance. It may be said after seeing this wonderful act that never before were trained horses seen In America, as nothing In this line has ever been done that can approach this act. For a climax the Ringllng Brothers this season end their programme with a double somersaulting automobile, which breaks the record of all deata invltlng thrillers. The act consists of a double somersault turned in midair by an automobile which plunges from a steep Incline into space. The act Is performed by a young French girl. OBSERVATION CAR Portland and Cottage Grove. The Southern Pacing Is now running an observation parlor car between Portland and Cottage Grove. Leaving Portland, southbound, train 19. at 8:15 A. M-, returning on train 18. leaving Cottage Grove,- northbound, at- 4:50 P. M. . Lighting fixtures of the Hunt residence, head of Cornell road, are being furnished by the M. J. Walsh Co. This is one of the finest residences on the hill. so on until 24 visits had been made by the letter. The first of these letters has now been returned to the sender and on the back are the names of 24 recip ients with dates of receipt and their addresses. This letter visited Portland, Mon tague City, Mass.; Maiden, Mass.; New buryport, Mass.; Boston, Mass.; Utica, N. Y.; Jumped back to Portland; was then mailed to New York City, and from there to Essex, thence to Hart ford, and from thence to New Haven, Conn. Starting from Klamath Falls, April 5, the letter reached Klamath Falls again about August 1, and was then sent on to Mr, Scott to show the result. One Connecticut man, who acknowl edges the receipt of the letter, says: The picture looks all right, but we havo our doubts about those trout being caught with a fly, and the only way yon can convince us is to get your friend, the general passenger agent, to send us free transportation and show us where that kind of trout grows. Then we will come back East and advertise the place among the fishermen hero and you will both make your everlasting fortunes." The letters and photographs are arousing interest among sportsmen's magazines and the resources of the Klamath region are setting some good advertising thereby. mix . :1 POINDS, CAUGHT I BIG LIST DOUBLED Building Permits for the Week Amount to $233,190. : 105 HOUSES EQUIVALENT Record. More than doubling the building per mits, of the week previous, the issue last week attained a total of J233.190, which Is considered far above the ordinary In light of the fact that only 105 permits were' granted throughout the week. In the figuring of realty dealers, Portland benefited by the week's Issue to the extent of the construction of 105 homes at $2220 apiece. The issue for the previous week amounted to $107,150. Literally dotted with permits entailing the expenditure of more than $3000 each, last week's Issue was one of the most encouraging of the Summer, and wound up handsomely with two permits of im portance. One of these announced the plana of I. A. Prters to build a three atory brick apartment house on College street, between Fifth and Sixth streets, for $26,000. and the other showed the plans of R. S. Howard to build a hand some two-story $9500 residence on Madi son street, oetween Douglas and Ardmore streets. ANOTHER INVITATION At 10 o'clock Saturday morning the greatest-topographic landscape picture in the world without question went on exhibition in our windows. The work is the product of Mr. Gibson Catlett, formerly of Los Angeles. Mr. Catlett now occupies offices on the 10th floor in the Board of Trade building. The picture is some 15 feet in length and overlooks a territory 1500 square miles in extent. It is made from an elevation of 2500 feet above the Government.
