In spite of the fact, or rather because of it, that a very great num ber of Washington people, and Oregon folk, too, -who invariably fly North Beach ward1 as the halcyon days of Summer ad vance, have th year turned their steps falrward and are waiting until later, o Tisit the beaches, the old guard, the regi ular devotees and loyal adherents to the- charms of this popular resort are hold ing their own and the showing is re markably good. Each week sees more cottages opening and the hostelriea are well patronized. Many affairs of a so cial nature are in progress each day and with the weekly dances, artificial, amuse ments and the natural and unsurpassed charm of North Beach, the days are ones long to be remembered. Long Beach residents notice with satisfaction the Interest Summer cot tagers are taking In beautifying their yards. GAIETY KCLES AT SEASIDE Crowds of Tourists and Pleasure Seekers Flock to Resort. SEASIDE. Or., July 31. (Special.) The past week has been a combination salad of rains and sunshine, with a predomi nance of the latter, and this beach has been the mecca of good-sized crowds of tourists and pleaaure-sekers. The surf bathing proves alluring under the balmy warmth of mid-Summer skies, and ex uberance of spirits and strenuous idle ness are decidedly in the ascendancy among the fortunate beings who are here. The sands are dotted with children, sand-players who dig and build forts and miniature cities, make culinary achievements of modeled sand, and waders who dare not venture far into the Inviting Pacific pond. Horseback parties and tallyho parties leave Seaside every day for interesting points about the surrounding country. On Thursday a tallyho party left the Moore for a Jour ney to Cannon Beach and Elk Creefe points. In the number were Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Goodman, with their young ster. Bertha, and Miss Rose Goodman, who are guests at the Moore; Miss Miriam Jacobs, Mrs. H. Bernstein, of Seattle, who is visiting Mrs. Emil Marx in her Seaside cottage, and Mrs. Ludwig Hirsch, with her guests. Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Goldman and son Paul, and Miss Sarah Harris. The trip included a viBit to the cave and other noted spots. Many social affairs, formal and Im promptu, have been In evidence. On Saturday Mrs. J. W. Matthes was hostess at a small tea. to which were bidden Mrs. Joseph Smith, Mrs. Benjamin I. Cohen. Mrs. W. D. Fenton. Mrs. Wheeler and . Mrs. Lawrence Knapp. On Tuesday Mrs. Joseph Smith gave a luncheon at which 20 guests were pres ent. The stringed orchestra has arrived at Seaside House for the season and many plans are being made for small dances and musicales at this famous and es tablished hostelry. Among People at Seaside. Mrs. Frank Moore, of Spokane, who Is a guest of her mother, Mrs. R. Sherlock, on Twenty-second street, Portland, has been sojourning at the beach for the early season, but recently left for a trip to Cloud Cap Inn. Miss Bessie Frogley, of Salem, Is at Seaside for the season. C. H. Lingenfelter, who Is United States District Attorney for Idaho, is at Locksley Hall, accompanied by Mrs. Lingenfelter and their attractive young daughter. Miss Madge Lingenfelter. Portlanders who recently arrived at the Moore were Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Mays. Mr. and Mrs. F. P. Russell. Mrs. W. D. Skinner and Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Patten. Mrs. L. C. Mackay. of Portland, was a late guest at Locksley Hall. Probably the first pedestrian trip from Portland to Clatsop Beach was made this season. with the arrival at Seaside House of Stuart Strong and Thomas H. Walker. The trip consumed 10 days and carried them over territory from Forest Grove, via Tillamook, the Nehalem. up to Cannon Beach and Elk Creek," in 11 i about 4o miles. Thorsen, In her beach home at Saltalr. SUMMER JOYS AT NEWPORT Moonlight Nights Are Utilized for Strolls on Beach and Bathing. NEWPORT, Or., July 81. (Special.) Those "lazy, balmy, how-do-you-do" clouds that floated leisurely over Seaside last Sunday came together with a crash over Newport and wet a thousand peo ple who were assembled on the beach, putting many In a good humor who wore bathing-suits and dampening the spirits of others. The excursion brought nearly 400 visitors, and probably they were among the most disappointed, as the weather before and since has been delightful. TJhe Summer band made its first appearance and was un -Germanic enough not to mind the water rendering many selec tions which tended to brighten the crowd gathered along the main street and those on the boats. The moonlight evenings of the past week have been thoroughly utilized by the young people who were seen prom enading along the beach and seated In various sheltered nooks, much to the dls comforture of Nlghtwatchman Oscar Olson, who though assigned to Nyt CteekJ Hegira to Oregon and Washington Beaches Increases as Summer Days Grow Ever Warmer. has included the beach and "all that on them is" in his district, electing him self moral squad and warning every per son of the dignity of the law before they have time to question his jurisdiction. However, the bay is far enough from Nye Creek to be Immune, and each eve ning launches and small boats contain ing parties of various sizes, and musi cians of various capacities glide over its smooth waters dotting the bay with red and green lights like floating stars, and sending out sweet strains of music which travel forth until they are eagerly de voured by the roar of the grinding waves on the bar. Phosphorescent fish swim ming near the surface are seen darting in all directions, and occasionally the low -moan of the distant whistling buoy breaks into the charm of the night "The night has a thousand eyes" and they are wondrous bright. But the green and red spots gradually disappear as the moon climbs mgner, and the music softens and soon all Is quiet and the playground deserted, for tomorrow means a picnic, a horseback ride, a swim or a dance, and must be prepared for by a healthy rest, and all the bright eyes are closed in sleep except those of the people whose work it is to be on guard In the stillest hours of the night. Kelly, Warrenton. of the Kelly Lumber Company, has com pleted the construction work on the 30,000-gallon tank which has been in stalled on the beach front. This tank stands nearly 60 feet in height and Is visible from all the Clatsop beoch as far south as Tillamook Head. Peterson and Johnson, contractors, have well under way the water system, the main line of which Is being laid down Fifth street- Mr. Oiler has completed his new cot tage on Fifth street and will expect to move In the early part of the week. - Rev. MOCLIPS, Wash., July 31. (Special.) Game and fish were never more plenti ful and such sea-fellows as seals, sea otters and sea lions were never more in evidence than right now off Moclips beach. One seal is on exhibition in an enclosure opposite the Moclips Peach Hotel, and the skin of a valuable sea otter was recently sold for H500. More people arrive daily and all cot tages are now taken, though reserva tions can still be made for parts of Au gust and all of September. The hotel are filling, but there are accommodations for more than WOO transients yet. Johnson, of Minnesota, the members of his staff and a party of inti mate friends are the guests today of the Spokane Chamber of Commerce, the Scandinavian Brotherhood and the Swed ish League. A banquet will be given to night in their honor. "We are having the time of our lives," eaid the Governor, "and I am enjoying it more than I can express. Really, you must not ask me to talk politics, for this trip has no political significance.' "But what about the Presidency la 1912?" the Governor was asked, "That is a long way off," said Mr. Johnson, with one of his most fascinating similes. The Governor's special train will leave tonight at 11:80 for Seattle. WORKMAN BURIED ALIVE Cut on Logging Railroad Caves In on John Ivorvich. ELM A, Wash., July 31. (Special.) John Korvich was killed this morning by a cave-in of the bank while working in a cut of the logging1 railroad of the White Star Lumber Company near Elma. He was buried eight feet under the dirt. Dennis Ward was near the cut at the same time. Korvich belonged In Seattle and has a family in Europe.
