In the near future excellent theatrical &ttrsrtinn booked, first and foremost being the engagement of the long-deferred pre sentation of the popular "Merry "Widow." The French Ambassador and Madame Jusserand were the honor guests at a handsomely appointed dinner given on Friday night by Mr. W. IX Wheels-right. The dinner was served in one of the private dining-rooms of the Portland Hotel, which was a veritable bower of brilliant General Jacqueminot buds. Mr. Wheelwright's guests were Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus A. Dolpb, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Ayer, General and Mrs. Charles T. Beeba. Dr. and Mrs. Holt C. "Wilson. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. s. Wood, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Koehler. Mr. and Mrs! William Mac-Master ajid Miss Elizabeth Peale. of New York, who Is the house guest of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lewis. Mrs. J. S. Mallory, wife of Colonel Mallory who has been In command at Oovernors Island. New York, is the guest of her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Sanderson Reed, on Wil lamette Heights. Mrs. Mallory's stay will be necessarily brief, as she and her two sons. Jack and Harry, will leave soon for San Francisco to Join Colonel Mallory, sailing thence for the Philippines. In honor of the French Ambassador and Madame Jusserand, one of the largest re ceptions of the year was given Friday night by Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus A. Dolph at their handsome West Park street resl denca. The spacious grounds were bril liantly and picturesquely lighted with hundreds of Japanese lanterns, while two great American and French flags were draped from the front gallery and held in place by red. white and blue electric 1 glits. The decorations for the various drawing-rooms, library and music-room were the greatest profusion of beautiful ro'S. In the receiving line with Mr. and Mrs. Dolph and the Ambassador and Mrs. Jusserand was Mrs. Theo dore B. Wilcox, while an assistant hostess was the recent bride, Mrs. Marion lolph. In the dining-room presided Mrs. Helen Ladd Corbett. Mr?. William Mac Master. Mrs. C. F. Boebe and Mrs. War rn F. Houghton. Assisting In the drawing-rooms were Mrs. Holt C Wilson. Mrs. O. H 9.- Wood and Mrs. Georga Davis, of Vancouver Barracks. Ices were served by Mrs. L. Allen Lewis, Mrs. John C. Aineworth, Mrs. W. Ft. Ayer and Mrs. "Walter F. .Burrell. The garden, which was canvased In, was arranged with tete-a-tete chairs and an attractive Japanese bower, where punch was served by Miss Kathleen. Burnp. E. S. Wood In a Dresden gown in pastel tints, with which she carried American beauty roses; Mrs. Davis, of Vancouver Barracks, wore a stunning gown of satin London smoke shade; Mrs. Richard Nunn, In white crepe and duchess lace; Mrs. Frank Hart, In a lovely gown of white lace and American beauty roses; Mrs. H. Both Mrs. Dolph and Madame Jusserand carried ex quisite red roses, which were grown and presented by Frederick : Holman. Mrs. Wilcox was strikingly handsome in white Un and necklace, of diamonds. Of decidedly more . than ordinary in terest was the engagement of Miss Alta Smith and Elliot R. Corbett, which was announced by Miss Smith at her French class on Wednesday at Mrs. Henry Ladd Corbett' s residence. Miss Smith Is an unusually' charming girl, of a blond type of beauty and a most gracious man ner toward both young and old. Mr. Corbett is t"he second son of Mrs. Helen Ladd Corbett, a grandson of Mrs. W. S. Ladd and the late Senator Corbett. He is a Harvard man of the class of '07 and is connected with . the Firft National Bank. Miss Smith is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Smjth, who have' lived In Portland for many years. Miss Smith Is a graduate of Smith College, where she was a decided favorite. During her Junior year she , was president of the class and later a signal hqnor was con ferred upon her when she was elected to the presidency of the council. ' ' A distinguished party from San Fran cisco and Burlingame that passed through Portland yesterday in Miss Jen nie Crocker's private car was composed of Mr. and Mrs. Frances B. Carolan. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Martin, Mrs. Mountford Wilson and Miss Jennie Crocker! Miss Crocker is the well-known California heiress, who nas lived much abroad, where she has been presented at court on several occasions. Incidentally it was she who lost the famous pearl necklace which mysteriously disappeared in San Francisco at the ball at the St. Francis Hotel last Winter, and which has never been traced.
