On Monday evening of last week fully 2000 Britishers gathered in the Exposi tion building. Nineteenth and Washing ton streets, to celebrate "Empire Day." It was an object lesson to the Ameri cans present to hear the way In which the Britishers took up the chorus of their National sonscs. W. A. MacRae. president of the British Benevolent So ciety, occupied the chair. The presi dents of the other British societies In the city, and H. B. M. Consul, James Laldlaw. also occupied seats on the platform. Mr. MacRae opened the pro ceedings with a short address in which he referred to the good qualities of the late Queen Victoria, and the ties which bind the various parts of the Empire together. Mrs. Rose C Reed gave a splendid rendering of Braw. Braw Lads." which touched the hearts of the many Scotch people present. An en core being demanded. Mrs. Reed com plied with "Comln' Thro- the Rye." F. T. Crowther gave -The Death of Nel son" In a pleasant fashion. For an en core Mr. Crowther sang "Land of Hope and Glory." another favorite with Brit ish audiences. Miss Kathleen Lawler sang artistically "The Maple Leaf." and ' for an encore "The Canadian Boat Song." H. B. M. Consul James I-aidlaw made a stirring speech. In which lie dwelt on the many virtues of the good wueen. ana tne tremendous strides the empire had made during her long and useiui reign, appealing to those pres ent to Join and support the British Benevolent Society in the work it li doing along charitable lines. A chorus, ??natter the Bonds, was sung by the Welsh Glee Society of 20 voices, under tne conductorshlp of T. J. Jones. The chorus was admirably rendered, the parts being well balanced, and the iignts and shades beautifully carried out. For an encore the society gave oin isvorite welsh national song. or nariecn. which was enthusi astically received. Mrs. Reed sang le Banks and Braes o' Bonnie Poon," and responded with the ever-welcome Annie iaurle. Mr Crowther gave the "Yeoman's Wedding Kong." and responded with the "Soldiers of the Queen." the en tire audience joining In the chorus. Miss Lawler then warmed the hearts of the Irish with "Kathleen Mavour neen" and "Klllarney." both of which were beautifully rendered. A trio com posed of Mrs. Reed. Miss Uvlrr and Mr. Crowther. sang "What a Merry. Merry Life We Gypsies I.ead." The concert was brought to a close by sing ing the "Star Spangled Banner" and "God Save the King." after which danc ing was indulged in by the members of the audience. tarus Eseman.
