I Portland, Oregon A City of 500,000 It does not require the memory of the oldest inhab itant to recall Portland when snugly nestling at the foot of the hills" that surround her, growing slowly, tenderly nursed by pioneers, "who, having fought their way across the plains midst hardship and privation, set tled in this glorious country, satisfied to live in peace and contentment without much thought of progress or commercial expansion. With the beginning of a new century many Eastern ers were attracted West by stories of this marvelous country, its wonderful climate and its great opportuni ties. A few settled here, and with a deal of timidity suggested changes and improvements. At first these were received with but little encouragement, and for the time being were held in check. At this same time a new generation of young Oregonians had sprung up, and hand in hand with men from the East formulated plans for a greater Portland and Oregon. This resolve culminated in the Lewis & Clark Exposition in 1905,. when the resources of our country and the beauties of our city were exploited to the outside world and the gateway opened for the development of this wonderful country. How well this has been done is known to all. Portland, for years hampered by over-conservatism, retarded for years by a lack of public spirit, handicapped by miserable politics, has, by indomitable pluck and spirit of a rising generation, grown into a metropolis. Portland has come to her own. The forward movement is now so universal that the mossback of half a century is a booster of today. The buildings erected in the last few years and those in the course of construction are fit to grace any city in the Union;. The advancement of Portland can no longer be denied and cannot be held back any more than did King Canute hold back the tides. Here's to Portland in igi2,a city of 500,000 people.
