Death of Pioneer Woman. Mrs. Rachel Baird died yesterday at the home of her daughter. Mrs. A. S. Dresser, 321 East Thirty-fourth street. She was an early pioneer of California, having crossed the plains with her parents In 1M7, settling in Santa Clara. Sho was married to Curtis Baird. a California pioneer, in IBM. With her husband and family sho came to Oregon in 1X77 and made her home In Oregon City until 1S9S, Rince which time she had been a resident of Portland. Her husband died three years ago. She was the mother of nine children, seven of whom survive her Mrs. Charlotte A. Dresser. Dr. Alvln "VV., John C, Oenrge Clarke and Llzane G. Baird, of Portland; Mrs. Grace W. Macdonald, of Flint. Mich., and Mrs. Kate M. Bryce, of Seattle, Wash. The funeral will be held from the family residence, 321 East Thirty-fourth street, today at 2:30 P. M., and the interment will be In Greenwood CViurtery. Wife Causes His Arrest. Fred Ham lin, of 3:!0 Tillamook street, was arrested yesterday afternoon on complaint of Mrs. Hamlin, charging assault and battery. There had been some trouble between the couple early in the week and Hamlin had absented himself from home to avoid at rest. Constable Wagner succeeded, how ever, in locating the man yesterday and took Mm Into custody. Mrs. Hamlin, who 1m but IS years old, has been married two years, and has a divorce suit pending in Clackamas County. Mrs. Hamlin asserts her husband on Friday last not only beat her but also assaulted her sister, Mrs. Russell. Hamlin will have a hearing to- morrow morning In the Municipal Court. Will, Discuss Recall EJ. S. J. Mc Allister will address the People's Forum tonight at Its meeting in Selling-Hirsch hall. Tenth and Washington streets, on "The Kind of Charter Portland Ought to Have." The meetings of the Forum are of Increasing interest because of the prospect of having three distinct changes in the form of the charter presented to tlte people. A large delegation from the United 13a st Side Push Clubs" is expected to appear at this meeting and present their side, of the proposition to recall the members of the City Council. New firm, new goods. Now Is the time to order a new suit for Kaster. Declinics to Extend Time. On the ground that conditions are extremely dangerous. Mayor Lane yesterday vetoed the ordinance passed by the City Council two weeks ago, extending the time for compliance with the provisions of the law as to wiring on overhead systems, where there are heavy currents. The Council fixed the time at June 1, lt09, extending it from last December. The ordinance regulates the manner in which wires must be strung, and is backed by union labor, led by the Electricians' local union. KAVANATJOH ArTNOONC-BS CAltBIDACT. John P. That nhr. slclans owning automobiles who exceed the speed limit while responding to pro fessional call?, are not violating the speed ordinance, was the opinionrendered yesterday by Judge Van Zante In the case of Dr. Calvin White, one of the 16 motorists arrested for racing on Holla day avenue Friday. The court held that as the physician was hastening, at the time, to attend a child suffering from pneumonia, the speeding of the machine waa not a violation of the ordinance. Henry Zimmerman, of the Studebaker Company, proved that he was being sent for a physician when arrested, and upon this showing he also escaped without a fine. W. H. Lee and H. W. Peterson entered pleas of guilty and were fined $14 each. -News Agest in Dilemma. J. B. Lang ford, a news agent on the Southern Pa cific, must either support his wife or break rock for the county. This matter was decided for Langford yesterday fore noon by County Judge Webster. Lang ford was up on complaint made- by his wife. He left her lately, after a squabble. ana wrote ner a letter from Ashland, say ing she might shift for herself in the future. Equipped with the letter she got out a warrant for his arrest. Langford told the Judge he had no money , to give his wife. The court's response was prompt and effective. It was that Lang ford goes to the rockpile if, by next Tues day, he hasn't devised means for giving his wife at least $25 per month. Ben jamin, an employe of the -Honeyman Hardware Company, early yesterday morning discovered a burglar in his room, at 533 Morrison street. The intruder fled, from the room followed by Benjamin who was unable to capture the man. The burglar before entering Benjamin's room visited the room of "F. D. Contracts for supplying furniture for the complete refurnishing of the Hotel Portland were awarded yesterday to J. G. Mack & Co. The elaborate plans ior rerurmsnmg tne hotel were de scribed some weeks ago. The new fur niture, personally selected by Mr. Bow ers, Is of the finest character, and will be Installed by the local firm as soon as It can be produced by the manufac turers. "Coming so soon after our success In securing the complete furnishings for tne new imperial Hotel," said Mr. Mack yesterday, "the Hotel Portland's order Is naturally doubly gratifying. Seven Complaints Are Returned by Grand Jury, Including Two Against Indians. Seven Indictments were returned yester day morning by the United States grand jury against alleged violators of laws coming under Federal Jurisdiction. The most Important of these was that against William Hanley, who is accused of ille gally fencing S5.000 acres of Government land in Harney County. Mr. Hanley Is a prominent stockman of Malheur County. Similar indictments were brought against Antone Vey, Joe Vey, John Boyd and Fred P. Phillips. The Veys are promi nent sheepmen in Umatilla County, but the Indictment charges them with fencing 1000 acres In Morrow County. John Boyd is alleged to have enclosed 360 acres in Union County, and Phillips 400 acres in the same county. Two husky redskins from the Umatilla reservation were indicted of crimes on their reservation, one offense" being that of Walter Bomson who was charged with the larceny of a saddle, and the other against John Ml'.chell on the charge of assaulting his mother with intent to kill. Mitchell attacked his mother one morning after imbibing too much firewater. He beat her over the head with a tepee pole, leaving her lying unconscious and almost dead. Bench warrants have been issued for the arrest of some of those indicted and several have been taken Into custody.
