Portland will celebrate its second an nual "Rose Planting Day,'' In honor of "Washington's birthday, at the Forestry building. In the, Lewis and Clark Fair ground.", at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Not only will the two great cities of the Northwest Portland and Seattle join hand in making It a notable occasion, but the State of Oregon, the City of Portland, the Rose Festival, the Rose Society, the Peninsula Rose Association, the commercial organizations of the city, the public schools, ail these will share in the tribute to the memory of America's lirst President. In addition to this the occasion will he sigiiHltzed by the dedication of one of the rarest roses that has ever been de veloped In this country "The Rose of Oregon." a flower which Luther Burbank has been spending years to bring to Its present stale of perfection and which he has sent to Portland to become the parent stock of the choices roses of the. Northwest. Mr. Burbank hoped to be able to come here, but he found that his experimental work in connection with the work the Government Is doing in floricul ture would not permit htm to leave Cali fornia. Similarly. Joaquin Miller, the famous son of Oregon and "poet of the Sierras." expressed a desire to be present and take some part in the ceremonies, but his publishers Insisted that he "rush proof" on his latest volume of works. He wrote that the best lie could do was to send souvenirs of his picturesque home down In California, and the &) post cards with his own autograph and a view of his Summer home will be given to the little girls who will take part In the exercises tomorrow afternoon. At (end for Seattle Fair. F. V. Dunham, a former citizen of Portland and present acting director-general of til Aiaska-Yukon-Paclfic Exposi tion will arrive here tonight, with Director of Publicity Welford Beaton, to take part as official representatives of the Seattle) Fair in the big civio demon stration. The Park Board has shown Its Interest In the affair by directing a gang of em ployes to prepare the ground In front of the Forestry building for the reception of the 100 rose bushes which the little bovs and girls selected from all parts of the city will plant during the ceremonies. The Park Board will have plenty of men nn hand to see that all the rosea brought there will be set out. The roses will be planted by a volun tary corps of more than a hundred boys and girls. The holes have already been r1t;g foretho rooting of the rose bushes, and M or more little girls. Instead or tho temporary planting, necessary because of the hurried ar rangements for rose-planting day last year, the, work done by the little volun teers will be permanent, and ever' rose bi-sli wiil be left to grow and thrive anf blossom through each season in the exact pia.-e where it Is planted. Portland has the distinction of being the only city which has a regular an nual rose-planting day. and all who are. interested in helping to make this day a success and a credit to the Rose City are urged by the Rose Festival Association to attend the ceremonies and bring along as many of the little folks in their neighborhood as can be rounded up. For the purpose of jogging up every one's memory the greatest massed band ever assembled In Portland, consisting of the musical organizations of the Peninsula. St. John and North Alblna. will parade the streets of the city dur ing the morning hours and will adver tise "Rose-Planting day" with flaunt ing banners. The Peninsula Rose As sociation, composed of nine district Im provement clubs, will atjfjind the big celebration at the Forestry building in the afternoon after their exercises at Columbia Park in the morning. Wynn Johnson, who- Is scheduled to deliver the chief address of the day on behalf of the association. Mr. Johnson will also rep resent the Rose Society, of which he is a prominent member. Will Hold Special Meetings. The opening service in the series of special meetings to be held in Central Baptist Church by Rev. John M. Dean, of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Seattle, will be given tomorrow night. The title of the opening address will be "Get Out of the Wine Press." These meetings will be conducted nightly, ex cepting Saturday. The subjects of the addresses to follow are: Tuesday night. "Three Deaths in One Life": Wednesday. "On the Gallows for the Commonwealth"; Thursday.
