For election of United States Senator In the Oreron legislature next Tuesday big preparations are under way both on the Chamberlain and anti-Statement sides. Foes of Chamberlain wilt con fine their tactics to blocking; Cham berlain, in the hope first of .breaking up his Statement Republican support and later of uniting fragments of It with tiie anti-Statement forces for election of some . Republican. While Fulton's supporters are taking the lead In the contest against Chamberlain, they say that they are willing to giTe way to any Republican, of whatever faction. Tuesday's voting will take place in each houiie separately, and If Cham berlain shall not then receive a ma jority In each house, the balloting next -day and on subsequent daj-s shall be In Joint assembly, wherein the winner must receive a majority of all the votes cast either 46 or less, depending on the number of absentees. Full Attendance Fxpected. From the looks of things there will be a full attendance and the required majority of the 90 members will be 48. To defeat Chamberlain on Tuesday, at least four Statement legislators will be reeded to vote against Chamberlain. In the JVitnt assembly at least six State ment members will be needed to vote against the Governor. Chamberlain's opponents are full of happy expectations for Tuesday which Indicates their belief that four State ment Republicans will vote against Chamberlain, in the one house or the other. More than that number are said to have signified opposition to Cham berlain, on account of his refusal to resign the Governorship, after election to the Senatorshlp. Benaon's Health Figures. On account of the precarious health of Secretary of Slate Benron. the Governor ship Is demed of very high value for a Republican to hold. Teath or incapacita tion of Benson woulf) cause the Governor to appoint a new Secretary of State, who, after Chamberlain's election to the Sena torshlp. would act as Governor until Jan uary 1911. By these changes. Chamber lain would hold the Senatorship and dictate the; two highest offices in the state, through his appointee in those offices Secretary of State and Acting Governor. J. X. Teal Might Get In. Members of the legislature have been Informed from several quarters that Chamberlain's appointee would be J. N. Tea? tDem.l. This would make Teal a formidable candidate for election as Gov ernor, in June. 1910. Chamberlain could have a long time to wait for Benson's vacancy of the Secretary of S'ate office until next December, since Chamberlain would not need to qualify as Senator until that time. It Is this big prospect that Republicans believe makes Chamber lain refiw to resign the Governorship. They surmise that Chamberlain has entered Into arrangements for awarding the prixes of this game, which prevent his resignation as Governor. AH this Is too much for Republicans to swallow at least, for some of them, in cluding a number of Statement Republi cans. The latter say that while they are pledged to vote for Chamberlain for Sena tor, they are not bound by Statement No. 1 to let him retain the office of Governor, and parcel it out to one of his favorites. Are Watching the Enemy. Everything waits on the action of Chamberlain's oprwnentg. The Governor's supporlers are watching closely, to see what they may accomplish. Foes of Chamberlain' will count noses In Salem Monday night and Tuesday morning to determine how many will vote against the Governor. In this muster they say they are opposed, for aome pecnllar reason, by the secret Influence of high officials of the state government y that of the Ben sons F. W. Renson. Secretary of State, and his brother. H. U Bsnson, the latter of whom I sold to hop for appointment as Secretary of State to succeed his brother: by that of George Steel. State Treasurer, over whom Chamberlain has some mesmeric power; by AV. S. Duntway. State Printer, who Is openly working for Chamberlain's election in company with his business partner. Representative Ab bott, of Multnomah. Kven members of the Supreme Court are accused of "'stand ing In" for Chamberlain. With this imposing array defending Chamberlain, it will be accounted a mar vel if his foes defeat him. Yet they are hopeful and even confident. The Senate will convene at 11 o'clock tomorrow and the House at J. The tlrst business -will be the announcement of standing committees by President Bower man And Speaker McArthur.
