COLD WEATHER CHECKS FKC1T TRADE. Northern California Celery Reported to Be Froseo. Tha cold weather kept the Front-street fruit trade down fo a minimum. As most stock was kept indoors because of the frost, the street bore a holiday appearance. Apples and oranges were the firmest fea ture Receipts consisted of five, cars of bananas In fine condition, one car of Southern Cali fornia oranges and a car each of celery and sweet potatoes. Reports from the South a ere that celery waa f rosea In Northern California, which will add to .h scarcity and the firmness of prices. A report from Consul John H. 5nodarass, of Kobe, statea that the Japanese Depart ment of . Agriculture and Commerce has de termined to grant a substantial sum In aid of its experimental station to Investigate the exportation of oranges. It Is stated that '.there la a larga demand for Japanese oranges In Hawaii and the United Statea every Winter, but the exporfr has been greatly hampered hitherto by difficulty In - packing the oranges so that they shall be free from the ravages of parasites In' tran sit. It Is to discover some method .of over coming thi trouble that the Department of Agriculture and Commerce Is cow Interest ing Itself. The potato market waa unchanged. There was a stronger local demand, but not much waa done on shipping account. . FIRM TONE IN GRAIN MARKETS. Barley Still Belns; Sent to California Local Receipts. The grain markets were all quiet yester day, as Is usually the case on Saturday A firm tone prevailed all along the line. A continued, movement of barley to Ban Francisco la reported. Fome of the Jobbers killed their surplus stork and sent It to the coolers. Chicken prices n the street wre nominal around 109 1 1 cents. Other live poultry waa steady. A few dressed turkeys were received, but the demand has not opened yet. Eggs moved briskly at unchanged prices. 3Co drop In values Is likely while the cold weather continues. Butter was steady, and fairly plentiful, not the cold ware may reduce the supply. Ptocks of cheese are running low and stor age supplies are being drawn upon. . With, a good outside demand prtcoe hold up firmly. ... ACTTVTTY IS THE HOP MARKET. Over looo Bales Change Hands During the Day. BUT DEMAND IS BACKWARD Colorado & Southern Helped by Confirmation of Pnrchas by Burlington Foreigners on Selling Side. NEW TORK, Dec. K.r-Tbere was a sub sidence of-the severe selling pressure In the stock market today and support seemed to be effective in sustaining prices. The de mand did not prove aggressive and was backward In following any considerable ad vance In prices and the list weakened sharply at the end. The publication of a reassuring statement from the president of the American Smelt ing Refining Company seemed to check the liquidation In that stock and its re covery relieved the market from a source of sympathetic weakness. There was a conspicuous rise In Colorado A Southern securities,- embracing the stocks and bonds, the latter marking -even a more marked advance than the stocks. This is one of the minor railroad properties which has figured most often lately in rumors pointing to absorption into one or the other of the large railroad systems. The working out of a project to cover the carrying trade from the Northwest to the Gulf of Mexico is indicated In this project as wli as in others Involving other railroads between those regions which have also figured in similar rumors. The purchase of the prop erty in the interest of the Chicago, Burling ton Quincy was practically confirmed dur ing the day. Foreign operators In American stocks were Inclined to look for a bad effect from the expected weak bank statement and they sold stocks In this market, helping in the early tone of unsettleraent. The American Railway Association's committee reported another Increase in the totnl of surplus cars for the half month ending December 9, amounting to 42,814, bringing the total of 173,645 up to the highest flguro touched since September 2. The very general distribution in the in crease In Idle equipment In all sections of the country gave an unfavorable idea of the progress of railroad traffic. The bank statement. In its details. Is an Illuminating exhibit of the efTect of .a rise In money rates on deposits with New York Clearing-House Banks, on which they pay 2 per cent In other banks and trust com panies. The reduction of over (16.000.0o0 in the cash holdings of the clearing-house bartka, which was the cause of the edvance In money rates, ha been accomplished by a reduction of (23.5')7.30O In the loan aver ages and of (48,111,500 In the actual loans, and that in a week that has seen an un usually large amount of important new financing and enlarging demand for banking credlta The Increase of (16.466.600 In the loans of trust companies and other banks points to the source from which part of the new resources were secured. Presumably Interior hanks depositing in New Vork Clearing-House Banks also have placed loans on their own account In New York by draw ing on their New York correspondents. Bonds were strong. Total sales, par value, (4,800,000. United 6tates 2s registered declined M per cent on call during the week. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Closing Sales. High. Low. Bid. Amal Copper 22.900 7K. Retailers Stocking rp Heavily AVith Eastern Turkeys Eggs and Butter Firm. SEATTLE, Wash.. Dee. 1. (Special.) Heavy sales of dressed turkeys were made at firm prices. Most of the stock offering Is dressed Eastern. Many retailers are lay ing In a supply of this, fearing that local stock will be senrco next week. Despite the arrival of five cars and the reports that ten others are due. many retailers through out the city tjelleve prices will be high and that money invested In turkeys at prevailing prices will be a good investment. Today's prlo2i ranged from 20 to 24 cents. Th cold weather Is stiffening the egg mar ket. Dealers had no difficulty in securing 4 and 47 cents for the best local ranch. Butter was unchanged at S7 cents. There was some talk of an advance, but prices are so high that several of the prominent dealers object to putting them up again unless ab solutely necessary. There was a fairly liberal supply of fancy apples today selling at (3 to (2.50. Poor apples do not sell at all in this market. BftRELY SAVES SURPLUS ONXY DECK EASE IX DEPOSITS PREVENTS ITS EXTINCTION. Remarkable Statement of the New York Clear! ng-Honse Banks. -Big Drop in ILoans. NEW TOR.K, Dec. 1. The Financier will say: The associated banks of the City of New Tork made one of th most remarkable statements Saturday covering transactions of the previous week ever known In their his tory. The loan Items showed a necord breaking decrease of (48,111.500, while de posits were contraoted by the enormous sum of 3,7:5.000. The loss in cash during the. week was (16,678.400. The unusually large changes were due primarily to payments made on account of the Panama loan, the United States Treas ury receipts for too week having exceeded (57.000.000, while payments out of the Treasury were less than (34.000,000. The loss of actual cash by the banks for the week exceeded the total surplus reserve re ported for the week previous and the only thing that saved the reserve from extinc tion was the great decrease in deposits, which lessened the reserve requirements by over (16.000.000. As a matter of fact, the reserve on all deposits decreased only (746, 000, leaving the present surplus reserve based on actual conditions at 114.184.05. The summary of state banks and trust companies In Greater New York not re porting to the New Tork clearing house showed, as has been the case for two weeks past, a heavy increase in leading Items. Loans expanded (16.466,600 and de posits (14.605,000, while cash Increased less than (850.000. The clearing house banks now hold 26.2 per cent cash reserve and the total reserve of the state banks and trust companies waa 28.60 per cent. The atatement of average of the clearing house banks for the week shows that the banks heHd (10.009.700 more than the re quirements of the 26 per cent reserve rule. This Is a decrease of (6,889,825 In the pro portionste cash reserve as compared with fast week. Ths atatement follows: Decrease. The market opened weak, with priois Qo to He lower com pared with the previous close. Before the end of the first hour prices had declined '.40 to o below the best market at' the opening. Throughout the remainder of the day sentiment continued bearish and prices 'held around the lowest' point. The market closed at almost the bottom, with May (l.OGliii'l.OoH and July 97W4M7HC Reports from Argentina stated that the weather there was hot and dry, ideal con ditions for harvest operations, whloh are In full swing In that country. The advices caused weaknoss In the wheat market at Liverpool, which was later reflected In the local market. A further decline in corn prices here also induced considerable selling of wheat. There was no new demand for cash wheat here and no new export busi ness was reported. The corn market was again subjected to heavy selling pressure by leading elevator interests which resultod in still further de clines in prices, the low point today for May being reached at 59?tc. which was also the"' bottom price for the July delivery. The market cloeod weak, with prices a shade to 4c lower than the previous close, with May at 60 4 e and July at 60 60 '-fee. Oata were weak nearly all day.
