MEMBERS OF FAMOUS SUNDAY SCHOOL; WHERE THEY ARE NOW BT T.EONE CASS BAKR. IN" the Kail of 1S4S. when the present site of Portland was little else than a wilderness, and when only a few far scattered buildings marked the pres ence of civilization, the first Taylor Street Methodist Sunday School was or ganized iv J. S. Smith, who had been sent to Portland as pastor by the Metho dist authorities. The location of the Sunday school was on the west side of First street, near Morrison. The build ing; was of lops, and was used during the week as a cooper shop, and on Sundays the pupils and teachers of the school constituted working force to sweep out the, shaving, build fires and make the place an orderly one for the holding of services. yfter occupying the cooper shop for a while, the school changed its quar ters to a new log house on Second street, near Stark, from which they again re moved to the new frame scboolhous Just then completed on First, between Oak and Pine streets, where they re nained until the Spring of 1S30. when the Methodists completed their new church on Taylor street, near second. wher the school was reorganized under the superintendent of Rev. J. H. Wilbur, with a number of Indian children among the scholars who. at that time, numbered about 50. Father Wilbur remained in charge as superintendent of the school until the Fall of 3S62. when he left Port land, and his position was filled by Rev. S. Kingley. who. with the assistance of Mrs. Kingsley. continued in charge vntll the Fall of 1S6. During this period the church was enlarged to accommodate the growing school. In 160 Rev. C. Hall became super intendent of the Sunday school, to be followed by Rev. r. Kutledge. who be came the pastor In lt2 and assumed the superintendence also. The scnooi in creased during his stay of three years to an average of very nearly 30ft. having 32 Bible classes, a large Bible class com posed of women, and a men's Bible class and an infant class. In 1S63 Rev. B. C. l.ipplncott. then pastor, assumed the po sition as superintendent, to be succeeded In IStlS by Rev. C. C. Stratton. who re mained two years. At the close of his pastorate the church and school occupied its new building, for which funds had lvn raised during the intervening four years, beeinnine with Rev. Mr. Rutledge. who first saw the necessity for a larger church building. In IMS John F. Caples was chosen superintendent and acted in that capac Itv when the following classes were ex isting: The first primary (infant) class In Taylor-Street Sunday School was might bv J. F. Jones and Mrs. Sarah V. Hill, the" former taking the boys and the latter the girls. . . . The children of the Sunday school built the bcIltower .f Taylor-Street Church In this way: Mr. Jones organised a "Celestial Rail way Company." In which each share of stock sold at 5 cents. Many of the older scholars still retain their certificate of stock issued over 40 years ago. which are iiualnt and interesting, and which bear the signatures of Vv". W. Glbbs. president: and Daniel Harvey, secretary. boh of whom are long since dead. Underneath a picture on these certificates of a wildly puffing engine drawing a long train of cars were written these truly Methodistlc lines, which so stirred the enthusiasm of the youngsters that each had the proud distinction of owning at least one share (a brick): Crare is the Are and t.ov is the Hum That moves this engine and this tral-i; Through tunnels dark, 'neath mountain! high. It bears the Pilgrim to the tky. Come, then, poor sinner, row's the ttm. At any station on this Itne, If you'll repent anil turn from sin. This train will top and lt you In. Ciass No. 1 was in charge of Mrs. J. F. Jones, whose death occurred two years ago in tills city. Her hus band still attends Taylor Methodist Church, and Is one of its most faith ful members. An amusing Incident relative to the establishing the posi tion of usher in the church is told by Mr. Jones. Coming from his East ern home in the early '70s. and used to Easteryi customs, he Informed the mem bers of the church that they should have un usher. BtLng asked what an usher was and in what capacity he would serve the church, Mr. Jones in formed them that the duty of the usrer was to greet the people, seat them and make them welcome, and offered his services for this position. The membars thought It a great joke, and laughingly accorded him the de sired post, which of course became a permanent one, and which place Mr. Jones has retained for years being also first usher in the new church.
