These are the floats which are to appear In the most imposing street pug-eant ever undertaken or devised in the Northwest, if not on the Pacific Coast, for the list will Include one more than has ever been shown In the most elaborate of the Los Anftelea flo ral fiestas. About one-fourth of a mile of track will be laid by the street railway company within the next 30 days, and several switches, together with four or Ave tracks, will be built Inside the spacious manufacturers' pa vilion, where these set pteces are to be designed and constructed by George Soule & on. the firm which for the past 20 years has been building the electrical floats of the Mardi Gras celebrations at New Orleans. George Soule. the veteran float-builder, who has the honor of having constructed more of these artistic pieces than any other man In the world, will arrive In Tcrtland some time in the early part of February- after he ha. finished his work for the next Mardi Gras. and will begin at once designing the floats for the streetcar pageantry for the Ilose Festival. The Portland Hallway. Light I'ow.-r Company has agreed to fumhh I cars, stripped down, to be used a beds for the floats, and within the next two or three weeks, after the spe cial track has been completed, these cars will be run out to the Manufac turers Building and made ready for the superstructures. It is worth while to mention the fact that no float "den' ever brought into service by any similar organiza tion has the space for constructive work that this particular edifice has. It is 260 feet In length and ISO in width, and will give ample room for laying the several streetcar tracks needed, as well as for accommodating the floats while under construction. The quiet campaign of the Kose Fes tival, which has been going on for the past few weeks, has proved to be more effective than the canvass undertaken a year ago. More money has been pledged up to dale this year with less than one-third of the city covered than was secured for the whole general Festival fund of last year. There is now about $35,000 subscribed or In sight, and monejr Is being added to the fund every day. No announcements have been made, with but few notable exceptions, of the amounts that have been contributed, and none will be mad until tka canvass ia completed. Several large gifts from sources that are regarded as unexpected have been promised, and will be published with the completed lists, 'and at the same time the canvassing committees will continue their work until the entire down-town business district has been raked over. Following this, the resi dence districts on both sides of the river will be attacked and the hunt for dollars will not be given up until every bit of coin that can be enlisted In behalf of the magnificent demon stration has been safely stowed away in the strong box of the Festival. Im mediately thereafter the management will begin to lay plans for the detailed celebration for the entire week of the Festival, June 7 to li Inclusive, for It will know how much money it will have to expend. with aeroplanes and other air craft are not to be confined to adults, it seems, for the joy of flight has Invaded the ranks of the youngsters.
