BERKELEY TAKES - ITS FIFTH DEFEAT .Stanford Team Outplays Var sity Eleven in Desper ate Game. HOLMAN IN STAR PLAYS rortlaud Boy Docs Brilliant Work. Immense Croud Witnesses Struggle, Which Cardi nals Win, I 2 to 3. BERKLEY. CV1.. Nov. 14. For the flftn consecutive time the football team of Stanford University lias defeated the University of California players, the score today being 12 to 3. In almost fven- department of the Rugby the Cardinal men outplayed their opponents and throughout the strug gle was a desperate one on the part of .-in Inferior team against a bettor one. California' lone score was made In the flrnt half. Stanford here scored six of her points also, adding the other alx In the aei-ond portion. Mitchell, Pcmber ton. Holman and Miller made Stanford's four tries, Crawford missing every goal. Cerf made the California wore. Harris missing goal. Inuiicni-e Crowd S-es Game. Tlie crowd wa probably the largest that ever witnessed a game between the rival universities, being estimated at 2ii..j0. The opposing bleachers were bril liant with daalies of the rival colors cardinals to the west and blue and gold 10 the east. Some time before the game the Berkeley rooters displayed a huge bear made entirely of yellow chrysantlie 1 1 urns. On the Stanford side was bung out a a-fool banner on which was the j co res of tlie games In the Inst nve years and beneath the legend "Oh, Berkeley, ain't It awful." The rooting was quite as noisy as evei and for the most part the songs and yell of former years were retained. California for the tirst time abandoning her Yale importation. "Boola." Under the Impulse of the students' rythmic swaying during their songs tlie Stanford bleachers trem bled considerably during tlie rlrst half ami 2 of the fainter hearted left at the end of the half. There was never any danger, however, as an examination of the supports at the end of the game showed them to b? as firm as ever. Rushes Prove Too Much. Iespit the "gritty work of the Cali fornia men they found themselves gradu allv ttorn out by their opponents, until at the end ihey were altogether unable to withstand the determined Cardinal rushes. The superior weight in the Stan ford scrum told constantly against the California 15 and especially In the latter part of tlie second half. Stanford's pass ing was Immensely superior to that of California and her forwards did better work In dribbling. The kicking of the two teams was about equal. Stanford heeled out of scrum more times than California. Crawford. Faulkner. Mitchell and Hol man stood cut as the brightest stars of the Cardinal constellation. Crawford's kicking being excellent except after the f.uir tries. Phleger and Dwtggina played strong games for California, the latter breaking up passing advances at several stages of the game. In the first half Butler kicked oft for California and after a succession of kicks tried for a Held goal from the 4"-yard lino, missing by a small margin. A long passing rallv by Stanford brought the ball to California 3o-yard line, where it Has stopped by Dwlgglns. Mitchell secured the ball from serum, dodged In Dwiggina and hurdled Butler, crossing California's line for the first try. Crawford missing an easy goal. Stanford 5. California 0. Brilliant Passing Ralljr. Dwlgglns. swartx, irf and Phleger car ried tlie ball for California in several plava to Stanford's ten-yard line but Krb kicked to touch at California's 30-yard 1'nc Watts kicked to Stanford's live-yard line. Sorensen. Markwart and Cerf In a brilliant passing rally carried tle ball over for California s only try. Harris mhsed goal. Stanford . California 3. Near tlie beginning of the second half California dnbhld to Stanford's four yaru line, but the ball was returned to tenter. Twice within the next few minutes Cali fornia dribbled urnw the Stanford line, but in each case Cadwallader fell on the ball and prevented a try. After the last of California's two failures the ball was returned Into touch at her l-yard line. Crawford carried it ten yards further. aftr which Holman as passed the ball by Erb from scrum and ran 20 yards to a In-. Crawford missed goal. Stanford California 3. Misses ;ol Again. After a 3u-yarrt dribbling rush Miller got the. ball on California's five-yard line and (rested for the fourth try. Crawford again missing goal. Stanford 12. The day was so raw-that those who Journeyed to the links to watch the play remained in the clubhouse and only a few of the players were accompanied by a gallery. Out of the : players who took part in the contest. J. K- Young, of the Ki verly Golf Club team, was the only one to defeat Colonel Bogle, and he fin ished the afternoon round with two up. Mr. Young had the Colonel beaten four up. but he missed the last hole. The golfers from Seattle played stead ier golf than the'rest of the teams and at the end finished with a score of 108. with the Waverly team just two points behind, with 110. The winning team was comprised of Munn. Spooner, Lippy. Van Tuyle, Gllllson. Andrews. Lindsay and Kerry. Mr. Llppy's score during the rounds played in the morn ing was best. He finished with one down, while In the afternoon Mr. Gll llson kept well to his game and fin ished both rounds with two down. All of the Seattle team improved in their afternoon play. The other teams that played with the scores they made were: Waverly ioif Club Macleay. Llnthleum. Young. Wright. Voorhies. Kerr. Zan and lloneyman. Score. 110. Victoria Sterling, (lilllsple. Twlgge. In dividual cups are given to the winning members of the team. After the match a splendid dinner was served at tlie clubhouse. The large dining-room wan handsomely decorated and the tabic on which the dinner was served repre sented a golf links, in the center of which was a miniature model of the Waverly Golf .Club house. Scattered over the links ' were miniature figures of men and women f playing golf and the caddies. II. C. Bowers planned the decorations, and the whole scheme was pretty and realistic.
