3 THE SUNDAY OREGONIAN, PORTLAND. SEPTEMBER 37, 1908. v.. A PART OF THE CROWD IN THE GRANDSTAND ON THE STOCK SHOW ENDS First Exhibition by Country Club Comes to Close. FINAL DAY BRINGS CROWDS i:ffctt of Gathering of Blooded Stock Encouraging, Only Dis appointment Being Lack of Portland Attendance. TVIth the best racing events of the entire week, with the biggest and most' enthusiastic attendance and with a general feeling of satisfaction on the part of the management, the first an nual meeting of the Pacific National Show at the magnificent new grounds of the Country Club came to an end yesterday. Neighboring cities, towns and com munities patronized the big show . liberally. Portland patronlxed It as grudgingly as possible. Each day's attendance showed a far larger percentage of out-of-town patrons than local, although each succeeding day developed a greater degree of Interest. Portland finally realized during the closing days of the fair, that one of the biggest enterprises on the Ccast. so far as horses and stock are concerned, was under way. and there was some show of appreciation. It was noon when the crowd began arriving yesterday and by the time the races started seats in the grandstand and bleachers were filled. Around the inside fence were vehicles of every de scription and many stood along the fence on the outside, of the track. Hundreds visited the stock barns where blooded stock from many states of the West and Northwest were quar tered. Hundreds will also visit the barns today, for the stock Is not to be moved until today and Monday. Brings Permanent Residents. "The fair was the means of bringing numbers of permanent residents to Portland." said Secretary Westgate. "Even from California several have In dicated their intention of locating here after seeing the show and realizing what it will mean to Portland. The show will make Portland known as the horse and stock center of the Northwest, and indeed of the entire Coast. "We will make no complaint about anything this year, for so far as the show was concerned, everyone admits It was a great success. Next year, and during succeeding years, we hope to have the co-operation of every citizen of Portland and of this section of the country." f A number of horses, including sev eral of Frank Alley's crack animals from Roseburg. made records at the track yesterday. The racehorses, run ners, trotters and pacers, for the most part, will be shlrped today to North Yakima. List of Premiums Awarded. i Following Is a list of premiums' awarded at the show: Jery.
