'Wedneaday, when the announce ment was made of the engagement of Mlas Effle Houghton, a daughter of Mrs. Warren T. Houghton, to Marlon Dolph. a son of the late Senator and Mrs. J. N. Dolph. The news was at once made the signal for many congratulations and the sending of flowers to the bride- elect, who la one of the Very popular girls who is posseased of the innate Southern charm of manner. Mr. Dolph's parents were distinguished In the annals of Oregon history, his father for many years being United States Senator and a leader In Pacific Coast affairs. Mrs. Dolph, who died recently In Paris, was a striking beauty, and for years an acknowledged Reader among the official set in Washington. D. C. Mr. Dolph Is a Williams man of the class of 1900. Miss Houghton Is a granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Howard, Sr., a niece of Mrs. James De Lavall Flower, who la now llvingr in Parts, and a first cousin of Mrs. J. Wesley Ladd. Mr. Dolph is a nephew of Cyrus A. Dolph, a brother of Mrs. Richard Nixon and of Mrs. Lewis Thornton, of Paris, the latter being formerly the attractive Miss Ruth Dolph who represented the Navy at the christ ening of the battleship Oregon In San Francisco during the Fall of 1S9S. . Many courtesies have been extended the officers of the Puglia, the Italian cruiser now in port, while several more informal hospitalities are scheduled for the com ing week. The commandant, Marchese Cusanl-Vleconti, la a member of one of the oldest and most distinguished Italian families. Just prior to sailing from home a year ago Viscontl Cusanl came into a valuable estate and a title, the former being a splendid old castle near Milan that was built in 1400, and which he will not be able to occupy until the termina tion of his cruiee one year hence. At the Mac Master dance there were a few of the officers present who spoke but little English, though they conversed In French. As there were a number of matrons and girls who speak the court language fluently, among them Mrs. Richard Kunn. Mrs. Frank Vincent Du Mond, Mrs. David Honeyman, Mrs. Wal ter F. Burrell, Miss Frances Wilson, the officers were at once put at their ease. Both W. D. Wheelwright and Robert Smith have entertained at luncheon at the Arlington Club for Viscontl Cusani. while a small tea was given yesterday afternoon for the officers by Mrs. Richard Nunn. Mr. and Mrs. C. fe S. Wood gave a small dinner on Thursday'-eve'nlng which included Dr. and Mrs. Richard Nunn, Mr. and Mrs. David T. Honeyman Miss Frances Wilson, Miss Hazel Dolph Slgnors Dlonlsi, Bernaroli and Galdlnl, The officers In turn have been hosts at different teas almost every afternoon since their arrival. At last report Mrs. J. B. Montgomery and her daughter. Miss Margaret, were at the famous German watering place, Carlsbad. Rumor has It that Frits! Scheff. of both comlo 'and grand opera fame, will soon announce her engagement to the Ken tucky novelist, John Fox. Jr., the author of "The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come," "The Trail of the Lonesome Pins" and other "best sellers." Mr. Fos acted as one of the American cor respondents for an Eastern magazlns during: the war In Japan. Miss Caroline Burns accompanied Miss Kvelyn and Caroline Wilson and Miss Oeorglnla Burns across the continent. She. however, will not sail with them for Europe, but will visit some school friends at Farmlngton. which has since been called Briar Cliff. ... e Perfect In every detail was the danc ing party Tuesday which Mr. and Mrs. William MacMaster gave at their charm ing place, Ardgour. which adjoins the golf links. This Is one of the moat artis tic and picturesque homes either In Port land or Its environs, being of English style of architecture, and built on low rambling lines, while all the rooms, with the exception of the servants' quarters. are on the one floor. The grounds are spacious and presented an attractive ap pearance as the great fir trees were studded with many colored Japanese lanterns, additional color being given from at least two score of motor cars. The various drawing-rooms were thrown together for dancing though oue was used for bridge devotees. The front piazza was arranged with Turkish rugs and di vans, while the north gallery or Summer breakfast room was Inclosed with canvas and served as a rendezvous during dances. Though Miss Katherlne MacMaster has not yet made her debut, she. assisted her mother In receiving, as She Is to return In the near future tb Miss Chamberlain's finishing school, near Boston. Two private cars were at ths disposal of the Quests though many motored. Mrs. MacMaster wore a gown cut on the pre vailing empire lines of chiffon embroid ered In lavender Scotch tstiesthe bodies trimmed with rose point and an amethyst shade of panne velvet, which was com pleted by a gold butterfly In her coiffure and an antique necklace of pearls.
