, FORTLAXDV JXTLY 26, 1903. -THI UNIVERSITY -OF WASHINGTON SEATTLE, WASH. It & t mm STATES OF NORTHWEST LIBERAL IN SUPPORT OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS Universities and Agricultural Colleges of Exceptional Merit Are Main tained in States of Oregon, Washington and Idaho. LIBERAL provision -has been made by the States of Oregon, Washington and Idaho for the public education of their youth. Not only have grammar and high schools been organized which would do credit to much older states, but the advanced schools rank with the best In the United States. These schools are liberally supported by legislative appro priations and revenue from land formerly set aside for this purpose. That they re ceive public Indorsement Is evident from the large registration and the willingness with which income from taxes is turned over to their support. Oregon Agricultural College is the old est public institution in this state and has the largest attendance of any school In Oregon. It has an excellent location at Corvallls and Its growth has been phenomenal. In buildings and equipment this school surpasses all others In Ore gon and Its faculty is large and com petent. It is broader than the name indi cates, as courses In literature, music and many other departments are given in ad dition to the best of scientific and tech nical training. The University of Oregon stands high among the state universities of the country. Its courses of study are thor ough and the school has always held a prominent place in athletics and other lines of student activity. Its equipment is all that could be desired and the lo cation ideal. Oregon also maintains normal schools at Monmouth, Ashland and Weston. State support has been withdrawn from a fourth normal school at Drain and it will be conducted as a private Institu tion. The University of Washington, main tained by that state at Seattle, Is one of the great universities of the West. In attendance It bids fair soon to equal the larger Institutions of the East. The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, to be held next year at Seattle, is a boon to this institution as three permanent build bulldlngs are to be erected for the fair which will become the permanent prop erty of the university. The Washington State College is located at Pullman and normal schools of high standing are locat ed at Bellingham and EUensburg. In Idaho the university and agricultural college are combined in one institution, the University of Idaho at Moscow. This school, situated in the rich Inland Empire, has a broad field to draw from, and sur passes in Importance all other educational Institutions in Idaho. The school has a landed endowment of great value. In athletics and other branches of Inter collegiate rivalry, the state Institutions of Oregon, Washington and Idaho stand high. The Oregon Agricultural College last year won the football championship of the Pacific Coast by defeating the California champions and besting Its rivals In the Northwest. In addition to other sports, the University of Washing ton trains crews for boat races each year, being located on Iake Washington, which affords exceptional advantages for this popular sport. The attendance at tha state institutions Is Increasing more rapidly than at the private Institutions and in each of tua three states mentioned the public colleges lead In point of registration. This, of course, is due In part to the fact that no tuition Is charged at the state schools. STATE SCHOOIi AT El'GEXE University of Oregon Heads the Pub lic School System. . With a constantly Increasing attend ance and a curriculum that has been care fully selected, the University of Oregon at Eugene is fulfilling its mission as- the highest lnstlution of the public school system In this state. Although compara tively one of the younger schools of the state, having been founded In 1876, it has a very important place In the educational life of Oregon. That it is recognized as doing a valuable work for the state at large was shown when, at the election in June, the voters of Oregon sustained a . large legislative appropriation on which the referendum had been called. The original building. Deady Hall, was erected by the citizens of Lane County nnd presented to the Board of Regents. The courses of instruction were at first VASHON COLLEGE AND ACADEMY A Home School in An Ideal Loca tion on Puget Sound. Burton, Vashon Island, Wash. WESTERN SCHOOLS OFFER BEST OF ADVANTAGES TO STUDENTS Democratic Spirit Prevails in Colleges, Athletics Are on High Plane, While Inter-Collegiate Contests on Rostrum Are Frequent. limited practically to literary lines. The university grew rapidly, however, and the demand for a broader curriculum was met by the addition of engineering, scientific and technical courses. The law school was established in 18S4 and the medical school in 1887. These two branches of the university are conducted In Portland. When the university first opened Its doors, the work of the different courses was practically all required. After a few years options were allowed, and Anally, three years ago, the regents adopted a free elective system, with a major re quirement not to exceed one-third of the 120 semester hours necessary for gradua tion. Eugene, located 123 miles south of Portland, is an ideal university city. The university buildings are situated on an attractive campus and student life is very pleasant. The main build ing, Villard Hall, was named in honor of the greatest donor to the university, Henry Villard, who in 1883 presented J6O.O0O as a general endowment Mc1 Clure Hall, devoted to the departments of chemistry and mining, has three floors with laboratory facilities for 200 students. Mechanical Hall contains the general heating plant of the university and the departments of civil and elec trical engineering. There are also dormitories for men and women, a li brary and a gymnasium. The athletic teams of the university rank high and the best of coaches are employed to direct work along this line. Forenslcs also are given a prom inent place In student life. The school. Is a member of the State Oratorical Association, Including eight of the leading colleges, and of a league com prising the State Universities of Ore gon, Washington and Idaho." The same schools conduct a debating league. PRACTICAL TRAINING FOR LIFE Portland Business College Fits Stu dents for Commercial Career. Opportunity to acquire a practical commercial education under the best of instructors is offered by the Port land Business College. This college has been established for years and always has a large attendance of young men and young women. E. P. Armstrong, the principal, has as sembled a faculty that represents the most modern and desirable methods of business Instruction. The graduates of the Portland Busi ness College are recognized every where as competent in the lines for which they have fitted themselves at the school and employment is always open for them. No unnecessary time Is wasted in the courses but care . Is taken to make the instruction thorough so that the student on leaving the school shall be permanently fftlclant and ready to take up successfully an active career in the business world. WHEN the young man or young woman is determining what school he shall select for his preparatory or collegiate course, one of the first points that he Investigates . Is the character of the undergraduate life. Opportunity for social, athletic and other activities is usually regarded as close in Importance to the main mission of gaining an education. In the freedom, democracy and healthful spirit of the student activities, the schools of the Pacific Coast will bear comparison with those of the East and, indeed, have many points to recommend them in preference to the institutions in the more thickly populated states. Progress of athletics In schools of the Pacific Coast has been rapid and the var lous Intercollegiate sport are perhaps more free from professionalism and other taint than In any other section of the United States. Not only this, but In football and track athletics, the chief branches of college sport, teams of the Far West are fast coming to he of as high standard as those in the older colleges and universities. Borne of the best ath letes of the United States are being de veloped In the Institutions of Oregon, Washington and California. As evidence of this it might be mentioned that world's records In three of the'prlncipal track and field events are' held by Oregon men. These records are in the high hurdles, pole vault and 100-yard dash, held, re spectively, by Smlthson. formerly of the Oregon Agricultural College; Gilbert, formerly of Pacific University, and Kelly, formerly of the University of Oregon. All of these men are members of the Ameri can team now abroad. Athletics have been more closely organ ized in the Pacific Northwest during the past year by the formation of a league, composed of six of the largest Institu tions. These schools are: Oregon Agri cultural College, University of Oregon, University of Washington, Washington State College, Whitman College and the University of Idaho. This league has adopted a set of rules that stand for the highest class of amateur athletics and which will probably be adhered to by several colleges outside of the league, as weU as those within It, as the spirit of these regulations has prevailed at all times. Besides football and track ath letics, baseball and basketbaJl have their followers In nearly all of the colleges, academies and high schools, while gym nasium work In many cases Is compulsory and In practically all Instances is avail able. Although athletics is given promi nence in nearly all of the schools of the Coast, it is not alowed to interfere with studies, and In this respect many of the Eastern schools are at. fault. Debating and oratory, as Intercollegiate events, have been given prominent places on the Coast. A successful triangular debating league has for its members the State Universities of Washington, Idaho and Oregon, and a similar organization is maintained by Pacific University, Wil lamette University and Whitman College. An Oregon debating league is also con ducted by Oregon Agricultural College, McMinnville College, Dallas College and Albany College. An annual oratorical (Concluded on Pare 11.) CAPITAL.
