THE SUNDAY OREGOXIAX, PORTLAND, APRIL 12, 1908. 9 CITY INTERESTED IN RIVER SPORTS Club Organized to Promote Racing of Motor-Boats on the Willamette. SEASON WILL OPEN TODAY l-'lrtl .Contest Will Be Between C. E. Matbiot's Kiltie and Peter Van. lal(as Van to St. John and ltetorn. Br V. J. FETRA1N-. The first motor boat race of the season Hill bo held on the "W illamette River this afternoon, when C. K. Mathott's Kittle and Peter Van Datta's Van will speed from the Morrison street bridge to the new railway bridga near St. John and re turn. Mathott's boat Is 26 feet long, t feet beam and Is equipped with 16-H. P. Smalley engines, while Van Datta's craft Is 22 feet long, 4 feet beam and has a 14- H. P. Cushman engine. Both are pretty craft and considerable Interest is being taken In the race. According to the agreement, the race will be for a fWO side bet, and each owner must run his own engine. The start will be made promptly at 2 o'clock from under the Morrison street bridge. The course to the new bridge at St. John and return Is approximately 11 miles, which distance it is expected the boats will cover in 50 minutes. Although this match will be the first of the season, to Judge from the rapidly increasing num ber of these boats now owned In Port land, It will be but a preliminary event to many such contests to be held here this summer. Four years ago Johnny Wolff was the only man in Portland who owned and operated a motor boat, but there are now more than 20 of these speedy craft owned In this city. This would Indicate that the Portland people are at last commenc ing to wake up to the fact that the Wil lamette offers advantages for this sport possessed by no other city on the Pa cific Coast. Motor boating Is a pleasure adapted to smooth waterways, yet on Puget Sound, where the waters run ocean high at frequent periods, this sport has thrived and Improved for years. Here in Portland, with the advantage of a smooth course at all seasons of the year the sport, until the present year, lias not appealed to the public. Imagine the possibilities of a motor boat race from Portland to Astoria, a distance of over 100 miles of prac tically straightway running on the waters of the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. Some skeptics will laugh at the idea, and yet it Is certain to come to pass, and incidentally it may be that such a race will occur during the coming Summer. The Willamette Motor Boat Club was recently organized and one of -the prin cipal objects of the club is to promote this Rport in Portland and vicinity. Among the exponents of this sport who have Joined the club are: J. Wesley I. add, Pamuel G. Reed, Walter Money man, Dave Honeyman, Chester G. Murphy, Harry L. Keats. Harry Mac Use, J. C. McOmbor, G. J. Kelly. Will K. Klernan, John E. Wolff, C. E. Mathiot and P. Van Patta. The Motor Boat Club is also making an effort to have the waterfront cleared cleaned up, and tinsightly scows and docks either repaired or demolished. As soon as the club secures a site far a clubhouse and moorings tor the boats a strenuous campaign will be inaugu rated to have the waterfront purged of these eyesores before the Rose Festival. The club is planning to hold an aquatic parade on one of the fes tival days and also motor boat races and other sports on the river. WIID VKKSTliF. AT HEILiIG Pr. Holler and Victor v McDaglen Meet Next Wednesday Xight. Besides being an expert wrestler. Vic tor Mcl-Aglen, the young giant who Is to tackle lr. Roller on the mat at the Heillg Theater, on April 15. He fought Emil Sihock, the hard-hitting Tacoma heavyweight, on that date, and won the decision from him In 20 rounds. Schock had fought and whipped every thing In the Northwest and If there was anyone better entitled to the title of champion, he had not shown himself around Washington. That an absolute groener could step Into the ring with a fellow of Schock's known ability and go through 20 fast, gruelling rounds with him. receiving the decision at the con clusion of the last period from Referee Kddle Burns, is Indeed remarkable. Many wise followers of the fistic game, among them being Jimmy Carroll. Burt Finney, Mike Lynch. Biddy Bishop, Johnny Reld and others, who saw Mc Laglen whip Emil Schock hi that Aber deen fight, praised the work of the young giant, and all of them predicted a bright future for him within the arena. W VS. if AUTO TRADE HOT HURT BY; PANIC Early Season Sales of Cars in Portland Greater Than ; in Former Years. FINE WEATHER HAS EFFECT Easterners Taken on Ride to Port land - Heights, Astonished at Beauty of Environments. Anto Show at Seattle. BY TV. J. PETRAIK. The splendid weather prevailing during: the past week caused the auto mobile owners much pleasure and the dealers owning: renting machines reaped a harvest, for excursions into the country were quite frequent. The several roadhouses were liberal ly patronized by auto parties every af ternoon and night, and a large per centage of the private owners took ad vantage of the weather find the con dition of the roads to v(pit the out lying districts. The puffing of the chug-wagon could be heard at any hour of the day or night, and In many instances it was mixed with the sound of voices chorus ing a popular air, the vocal effort of a Jolly party of "night riders" being carried to their homes in a big tour ing car after having enjoyed a spin into the country. The much talked of panic recently experienced has seemingly but little affected the "bubble" trade, for the early season sales of machines have equaled and in many instances eclipsed those of the past seasons. Practically every dealer in town is blessing the weather man and praying for a con tinuance of the present brand he is dispensing. A party of Easterners were treated to an automobile ride one afternoon last week, and during the course of the entertainment the guide proposed a trip to Portland Heights. The chauf feur was willing, and the big touring car was headed for the Canyon road, and the circuitous climb of the hill began. For a time nothing was said by the party, but as the machine ap proached the top of the hill, at each turn of the winding roadway, ex clamations of delight and pleasure at witnessing the snow capped peaks In the distance were heard from each of the occupants. It was their first In troduction to the scenic environments of Portland, and so pleased were the tourists at the sight, that a stop was made near the top of the hill in order that they might be afforded an op portunity of taking in Mount Hood and the adjacent peaks in all their grand eur. This same trip in an automobile might also attract a few staid old Portlanders who have yet to learn to appreciate what this city has In the way of scenic attractions. ... According to one of the keepers at the City Park,, there were more auto mobiles driven through the park last week than ever betore at this period of the year. Many of the autoing visit ors stopped their motors and alighted to inspect the different attractions at the park. Some took occasion to while away the time on the benches possess ing an advantageous view of the city and liarhor below, while others toured No Uncertainty, Experiment or Guess Work About Our Treatment for the Diseases Which Constitute Our Specialty In the treatment of certain special diseases there can be no comparison between the ability of the ordinary doctor and the trained scientific specialist. In his fruitless efforts to explore and conquer the whole field of medicine and surgery the average physician so scatters his talents that he becomes thoroughly pro ficient in no particular branch; possesses no special skill, no expert knowledge on any given subject. But the true specialist not the ALLEGED specialist, whose pretended specialty includes every human ill, as their announcements imply the genuine expert never attempts more than he can do well. His per sistent study, diligent research and scientific investigations are all directed to a few diseases, a single class of them on which all of his efforts are concentrated and to which his practice is limited. Hence he becomes easily supreme in his chosen field of work. The winding roadways, well shaded by trees, furnish more than a little pleasure to the autolst, who delights in steering his big machine up the cir cuitous, and. at intervals, steep in cline. Some chauffeurs have difficulty in (leering their machines around the short turns, and the experts are boast ful of their prowess in accomplishing this feat without having to stop or back their machines. The city park affords opportunities for automobiles that cannot be found In the outlying districts, and that is probably one of the reasons so many machines may be seen touring the place every day. . The proposition for holding the 100 mile endurance race during the coming season is still being talked of by the auto enthusiasts. This event will prob ably take place in the latter part of June or early July. It is possible that the Fourth of July will be selected as the date. At any rate a large per centage of the dealers and a goodly number of the private owners are anx ious to test their machines In an en durance run of this kind. The base line and section-line roads furnish an excellent opportunity for the holding of such an event, and while the ma chines would be required to lap the rouK according to the number of miles stipulated for the run, the course de pends both on length and condition of roadbed. This kind of a test is looked upon as a genuine means of displaying the qualities of a machine, for it is what a machine can and will do on a fairly good road that attracts the pur chaser, for no one desires an automo bile to run it through a rough and un improved, country. . . As a fitting beginning for the com ing Automobile Show, which is to be held In Seattle from April 22 to 25, an automobile parade in which several hundred motor cars will participate, will be held at noon on Wednesday, the 2 2d. The line of march has not yet been arranged, but it will include all the principal down-town streets, as well as some of the Important residence streets. Enthusiasm for the show is very high: every dealer in the city is work ing on his exhibit, and when the doors are thrown open the first day every thing will be In readiness to welcome the visitors. The show will be one of the most elaborate ever staged in the West, and will contain haif a million dollars worth of automobiles and accessories. Space has practically all been sold, and has been so divided that every one has enough to meet all requirements without crowding. This Is the first real automobile show to be held in the Northwest, and nothing is being left undone to make it a success from an artistic and social standpoint. The decorations will be elaborate, consisting of native greens, flags and bunting, and the lines marking the di visions of each booth will be designat ed by a pot containing the state flower. Altogether it will give the Impression o an automobile trip through fairy land. CCP IS OFFERED BY LIPTON Tea Merchant Hangs Up Trophy for Pacific Yacht Kace. HONOLULU, April 11. Do not delay longer. The methods I devised twenty years ago for "treating men's diseases proved a radical step in medical science. Those methods have en abled me to cure diseases that were formerlv regarded as Incurable. In working out my methods. I held the theory that "WEAK NESS," for instance, was not a constitutional or functional ailment, but a prostatic affec- tion, and therefore merely local. I reasoned that Its constitutional effects were simply the results of a tremendous waste of energv due to inflammation of the prostate gland; that this being true, a local treatment could alone affect a cure. Thereupon I devised the treatment I employ today with such marked success. Indeed. I have never known this treatment to fall to effect a complete and permanent cure In a comparatively short time. , , No Man Need Be Weak Hatiment ?,T othcr dlfeases peculiar to men Is also along original "?.nd lsAeTqrUTty s?eessful. Delay Is Dangerous Men whose vitality Is exhausted, those who have some private disease or weakness lurking in their system, and who are prematurely old. while still young in years broken-down wrecks of what they ought to he - and who want to be strong and to feel as vigorous as they did before they wasted their strength, to enjoy life again, to win back the vim, vigor and vitality lost, should consult with me before it is too late. My Direct Method Treatment Offers a Positive Cure v for Every Ailing Man. I Cure "Weakness" "Weakness'1 is not a nervous disorder, demanding a tonic system of treatment, but is merely a symptom of chronic inflammation or conges tion In the prostate gland. This condition exists as a result of early dissipation or some Improperly treated contracted disorder, and requires carefully directed local measures only. By mv own original methods the prostate gland is quickly restored to Its Mormal state, which results In full and complete return of strength and vigor. Mv cures are per manent, because the condition responsible for the fnnctional disorder is entirely removed, and I am convinced that by no treatment other than my own carefully directed local measures is a radical cure of this ail ment possible. . Contracted Disorders The serious results that may follow negWct of contracted diseases could be scarcely exaggerated. Safety demands an absolutely thorough cure in the least possible time. I have treated more cases of contract disorders than any other physician upon the Pacific Coast. My cures are thorough and are accomplished in less' time than other forms of treatment require in producing even doubtful results. I employ reme dies of my own devising, and my treatment is equally effective In both recent and chronic cases. I also permanently cure SPECIFIC BLOOD POISON, STUICTURE.
