Reception to Mrs. Moore. An elabo rate reception was given yesterday by the Women's Club at the residence of Mrs. P. J. Mann In honor of Mrs. Phillip X. Moore, of St. Louis, the vice-president of the Xatlonal Federation of Women's Clubs, and president of the Xational As sociation of Collegiate Alumnae. Mrs. Moore has received a number of social rourtesies since her arrival on Tuesday. She is a woman of marked mental at ' tainments, is well poised and has a rharming manner. On Friday afternoon the Oregon branch of the Collegiate Alumnae entertained for Mrs. Moore at the residence of Mrs. Ralph Wilbur. The guests at the reception yesterday In cluded members of the Federated Clubs of this city, of the Collegiate Alumnae and Vassar students, Mrs. Moore is a graduate of Vassar and one of the three alumnae regents of that college. Re ceiving with Mrs. Mann were Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Frederick Bvans Eggert, president of the Women's Club: Mrs. Sarah A. Evans, president of the State Federation, assisted by the members of the executive board. The decorations for Mrs. Mann's attractive drawing-rooms were quantities of ferns, palms, roses, sweet peas and star clematis. In the dining-room arranged with a profusion of Caroline Testout roses, presided Mrs. (McKinley Mitchell. Mrs. Millie Perkins, Mrs. A. Staiger and Mrs. Flora S. Montgomery, pastor of the Third Presbyterian Church, East Pine and Thirteenth streets, returned Friday from Mount Jefferson, where he and his family spent a month. Rev. Mr. Montgom ery climbed over different portions of the mountain, but owing to adverse condi tions, did not reach the summit, although he was within 300 feet of the top. On one occasion he got up to the 300-foot pinnacle, but a fog coming up, the party was compelled to descend. Rev. Mr. Mont gomery says he greatly enjoyed his va cation and acquired a pretty familiar ac quaintance with Mount Jefferson without reaching the summit. He will resume his work at Third Church today. Boys Accused of Stealing Bikes. Po lice detectives late yesterday afternoon arrested Lee, Claude and Ross Hickman, 14, 12 and 10 years old respectively, and charged them with the theft of 17 bicycles. Portions of many wheels were confiscated, and are held as evidence. The boys were arrested at their home. 335 Cherry street, Albina. They will be taken before the Juvenile Court. The father of the boys is a carpenter, and Is separated from his wife. She has been forced to work to earn a livelihood, and during her absence, it is said, the three brothers pilfered. Their guilt is said to extend to the numerous thefts of bicycles occurring here of late. Cars Collide on Grade. Because Mo torman Spivey of car Xo. 263 on the South Portland line of the Portland Rail way, Light & Power Company, failed to properly adjust his brakes when he ran ahead to assist the motorman of car No. 260, a collision resulted yesterday morning. Becoming loosened by means of air leakage, car Xo. 163 started down the Corbett street hill and ran a dis tance of eight blocks at tremendous speed, crashing into car No. 140, telescop ing and completely wrecking it. The crews Jumped and. there being no pas sengers, no one was Injured. Dr. Cob Will Speak. Secretary W. E. Williamson of the East Side Roosevelt Republican Club announces that Dr. Henry W. Coe has consented to address the club next Tuesday night, August 27, at Logus Hall, northwest corner of Grand avenue and East Washington street. Dr. Coe was a classmate and in timate with President Roosevelt. He will give his version of the movement and drift of sentiment for the nomination and election of the President for another term. The club plans holding, regular meetings hereafter. Rev. w. L. Upbhaw Resigns. Rev. W. L. Cpshaw, who has been pastor of the Mississippi Avenue Congregational Church, has tendered his resignation, which was accepted. He will deliver his farewell sermon tonight. Rev. Mr. Up sbaw will enter the mission and Sunday school work in Eastern Oregon Septem ber 1. For some time he has had dif ficulty with his throat which interferred with his preaching. As tne atmosphere In Eastern Oregon is lighter than in the Willamette Valley, he hopes to receive benetit from the change. Bishop Scaddino Leaves. Bishop Scad ding of the Episcopal diocese of Oregon will leave this week for a trip East and will be away three months. In Rich mond, Va., Bishop Scaddlng will attend a general convention of the Episcopal Church and the remainder of his time will 'be spent lecturing. His lectures will be given to raise money for the work of the church in Oregon. His last sermon before leaving will be preached this morning at St. Stephen's, Thirteenth and Clay streets. The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Roaher, who reside at S04 East Thirty second street, will sympathize with tnem In the death of their young son, Harold Nicol Roaher, who died Friday, at the age of 10 years 7 months and 14 days. He had just undergone an operation, but failed to survive the ordeal. SENTENCE FOR COLLINS Captain of Sunken Tug Wizard Has License Suspended. SAN FRAXCISCO, Aug. 24. Supervising Inspector Bermingham today rendered a decision in the case of Patrick Collins, master of the tug Wizard, which was sunk near Point Gorda last May. The local board found Captain Collins guilty of negligence in navigating the vessel and suspended his license for nine months. Captain Bermingham censured Captain Collins severely. WHERE JO DINE.
