Clatsop Beach throngs are 'not abating, and the -visitors are ar riving In great numbers. Cottagers and hotel guests find opportunities for re creation in boating, bathing, bowling, golf, tennis and horseback riding. The later sport Is certain to bound Into Immediate favor as a string of 20 horses will arrive from the Portland Riding Academy next week. Social gayety is now in full swing and enter taining.. Is carried on In a hospitable manner In all the cottages, while the hotels also are the scene of many par ties. A pleasant camp of tents and a nice dining-room and other suitable accom modations can be found In the beauti ful grove of trees near the Gearhart Hotel. The camp Is conducted by- the Young Women's Christian Association of Portland, and is under the direct management of Mrs. L. J. Toombs, an experienced caterer. The plan Is to make It a place where working young women can have an outing at a rea sonable price. Married couples are also received, and a good time Is promised for all. Kate Sunweber, In honor of the Misses Mildred and Dorothy Moulton, a novelty called a watermelon feast was celebrated on the Gearhart Beach Wednesday night. It proved to be a most enjoyable event. The participants were: Miss Clara Smith, Miss Julia Munson, J. Polivka, Mrs. Jorgenson and Mrs. Polivka. Councilman George B. Cellars and family are occupying the Carroll cot tage for the Summer. Dr. Payne, physical director of the Portland Academy, and wife, are oc cupying the Payne cottage, Gearhart Grove. A "600" card party was held at the res idence of George B. Cellars and wife Tuesday night. The guests were, Mrs. James Reed, Miss Pauline Rummelln, Mrs. Judge Frank Smit., G. B. cellars, Mrs. Cellars, Miss Roach, Mrs. Coggs well. New cottagers are: Mrs. W. S. Linney, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. -oneyman, W. J. Burns and family. An Informal muslcale was held Monday evening at Gearhart Hall. The guests were: Miss Bemice Miller, Miss Hortense Miller, Mr. Herbert Miller, Miss Grace Koneyman, Miss Helen Cake, Ralph Cake, Lloyd Mager. Jacob Krlmbel, a contractor of Port land, has completed a new cottage at Uearhart. Arthur Gray and famuy have moved into their new cottage at Gearhart Park. Dr. R: J. Chlpman and wife and child ren will occupy the new J. Krlmbel cot tage for the rest of the Summer. Mr. Edward Butterworth, of Chicago, is visiting at the Gearhart Hotel. Mr. Theodore Kruse, proprietor of the Kruse Hotel, came down from Portland and spent a few days on business and pleasure. t Mrs. John Toohy and family, of San Joee, Cal., are spending the Summer at Gearhart Park. Miss Mary Otto was the guest of Mr. and' Mrs. W. H. Churchill at Gearhart Park this week. A large bonfire, that could be seen for miles, was built on the beach Sat urday evening, around which a merry party gathered, who toasted marsh mallows, popped corn and made merry until a late hour. The merry party consisted of Miss Stlckney, of Minne apolis: Miss Mary Otto, from Portland; Mrs. W. A. MacEacham, of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Staples and Miss Inez Staples, Mr. and Mrs. Churchill, Miss Clarrls Churchill- and Dr. Brlggs, of Portland. MERRY DAYS AT SEASIDE No Dearth of Amusements for Visi tors at Summer Resort. SEASIDE, Or., July 27. (Special.) There Is much in the amusement line to entertain Summer pleasure seekers. The Lyric theater has been opened by the Bingham stock company presenting a comedy-drama, "The Tide of Life." Ralph Clifford and others of traveling dramatic fame are producing "Rip Van Winkle" at the Pavilion. Two dance halls are running, the skating rink, bowling alley, a moving-picture show and Arnold's merry-go-round Is expect ed to arrive soon. Fishing continues to be a favorite pastime off the pier in front of the Moore Hotel. Gasoline launch partien are much In vogue. The road to Elk Creek and Cannon Beach is now in good condition, and stages and teams are much In demand. All visitors go to Gearhart Park to view the delightful scenery, and immense forests to be found there'. The Necant cum River route is used, also the train. Batning is generally indulged In. The crowd Is large, comprising men, women and children. . y The members of First Battery, Field Artillery, O. N. G., will. arrive August 8 and go into camp for drill and target practice. Lieutenant Lee M. Clarke is already here. C. C. Cate gav'e a dinner party at the Moore Hotel on Thursday. The guests were Paul Giesy, Thomas Alexander Kerr, Harlow Moore, Carroll McFarland and Horace Fenton. Mrs. Emily M. Lucas and daughter, Muriel, of Portland, are spending the season at Moonlight Grove cottage. Sea side. Miss Lizzie. Gardiner and Mrs. Tracy Dcvore are visiting Mrs. Lucas for a few weeks. Beach life offers many diversions. The children play and dig sand and wade in the surt The older peoxl meet the in- uoming trains and Invariably ask every new arrival, "When did you come down?" and "How long are you going to stay?" Some persons dig clams, others fish in the surf, and the young folks attend the skating rinlf. dance halls and bowling alley. Riding parties are frequent, and rides to and fro on the railroad are en Joyed by some. Fishing Is also a favorite sport on . the Ilwaco dock. Tom cod are caught In large numbers. Occasionally, by way of excitement, there Is a drowning scare, which Is usu ally the case of a woman frightened by being caught in a big breaker. Some heroic man rushes to her assistance and later the report is current of the rescue from a watery grave of a beautiful dam sel. As a matter of fact, the surf bathing has been pleasant, and without incident worth a serious mention. Old beach resi dents, however, caution the visitors that the huge breakers of the mighty Paclflo Ocean are treacherous, and that caution Is necessary, and not to go too far out. Beach history Is that children never meet with an accident while playing In the surf and there are no fatalities on record as to children. The youngsters play much in the water, and all seem to know enough to keep away from danger. The weather has been pleasant during the week. The Washington law to protect clams and crabs prohibits their sale within the summer months. This does not prevent peoplg from catching crabs or digging clams for their own use or giving them away.
