COMMENCING MONDAY MORNING AT EIGHT O'CLOCK RECORD PRIGE FOR LAND FARM OX BASK I.1XE BRINGS $700 AX ACRE. Large Tracts Near Greeham Are Be ing Broken l"p Into Smajl Hold ings and Rapidly Improved. Dr Thompson, of Gresham, who has Invested in farm property In that neigh borhood largely, says that between Port land and Pleasant Home newcomers are rapidly buying up land, both Improved and unimproved. Gresham Is a center for the Powell Valley district, and is sur rounded by a rich farming section. "I know of no place in Oregon," said Dr. Thompson, who was in Portland last week, "where investment In land is more safe, or which promises more sure re turns than this section." New buildings, residences and 'barns, are being put up on the Powell Valley, Section and Base Line roads as far out as Gresham and the Sandy River. Brush lands are being cleared and put under cultivation along these roads by the new owners. In the vicinity of Rocltwood, on the Base Line road, practically all the farms have changed hands the past year, and have mostly been divided into five and ten acre tracts. G. G. Parman. of Condon, Gilliam County, has purchased 16 acres on the Base Line road for $10,000 from a mining man, and has taken possession of the property. This sale was at the rate of TOO an acre, the largest price that has been paid for land In that district. It indicates the upward tendency of im proved farm lands along the country roads. Owing to the expectation that the Mount Hood railway will pass through this district the price of land has taken quite an advance. The presence of sur veyors about Rockwood and north ' and south of the Base Line road has also stiffened the prices. It is understood by the farmers that the route will not be far from Rockwood. Much is expected from this new line. The new branch railway built from Cedarville to Fairvl'ew and Troutdale has already stimulated sales in that vicinity. J. A. Larrabee, of Southern Oregon, bought a farm of 64 acres on this line the past week for $11,000, which is about $200 an acre, a high price for land at this distance from the city. The land is Im proved, however, and on a trolley line with direct connection with Portland. This was the main consideration in making the purchase. A year ago this same land was selling for less than half the present prices. Near Falrview, R. E. Stone sold to H. 8. Stone 49 acres, but the considera tion is not mentioned. J. L. Pease sold eight acres to Harry J. Mlllett for $1150. Frank Strlckrott, a well-known farmer living in chrlstilla Valley, east of Mount Scott, says that Improved land is selling in that Valley at from $80 to $150 an acre. Many new comers, he says, are making inquiries there for tracts ranging from five to ten acres. This Valley is especial ly adapted to fruit raising, but the farms have been large and. not well developed. Mr. Strlckrott says the tendency now is to divide up these holdings. Pensioned by Southern Pacific. Edward S. Elliott, bridge tender on the Madison-street bridge, has Just received from the Southern Pacific Railroad Com pany back pay to the amount of $600, ac companied by the announcement that he had been granted a monthly pension from the company of $50.40 to continue for the rest of his life. Mr. Elliott was em ployed for 37 consecutive years as engi neer for the Southern Pacific Company, from whose employ he resigned a year ago. ' . NEW TELEPHONE COMPANY Hood River Citizens Organize With $40,000 Capital. HOOD RIVER, July 20. (Special.) The Home Telephone Company has been organized here by the election of di rectors. It is announced, that the full amount of stock -asked for lias been subscribed. The capital stock Is $40,000, all of which is local money. The system provides for long-distance connections over the Northwest ern Telephone & Telegraph Company's lines, 23 per cent of the revenue from which wiil go to the former company and the rest to the local organization. It was stated today by officers of the Northwestern Company that the system will be available in three months from the time active work is started, which is expected to be In about two weeks. Dry Creek Ranch Brings $31,885. WALLA WALLA, Wash., July 20. One of the largest real estate transfers to take place in this city lately occurred yesterday, when County' Auditor J. N. McCaw. sold a 911-acre wheat ranch for $31,885. The land is located on Dry Creek, north of the city, and the soil is of the light variety. PORTLAND PERSPIRES - MERCURY AT 91. WITH Humidity Low, but Absence of Cool ing Breezea Causes Discomfort. The Hourly Temperatures. There was an attempt, obviously, to beat the season's heat record yesterday. Technically the sun failed by a fraction of a degree, although to all intent and purpose It was the hottest day of the year for while the humidity was com paratively .low, there was an absence of cooling breezes. Smoke from chimneys could be seen mounting upwards as straight as a battalion sergeant-major on dress parade. The sun started the day favored by something of a handicap, the night having been calm and much heat being left In the air from the day preceding. Gradually up through the-80's the ther mometer worked its way until early In the afternoon it attained to 90 degrees. At 2 o'clock it was 91 degrees and a frac tion and a 3. back to 90. These slight fluctuations continued through the after noon, occasioned by the action of the cool layers of air above the surface of the earth effecting a successful invasion now and then. Such portions of the public as were placed in thermal communication with the sun found themselves fearfully un comfortable. Perspiration flowed like water at a dollar-a-plate dinner. That unpleasant form of molecular disturbance known aa heat held full sway and happy was the person whose hold on economic conditions was such as to allow him to spend the afternoon in the shade, the river, or better still In the icehouse. People who come from the East aver that Portlanders do not know what real hot weather is. but the average person, no doubt, is willing to forgo closer asso ciation with the sensation after surviving yesterday. There were no prostrations re ported, but then there never is, or seldom, on the Coast It only gets uncomfortably hot. The hot weather spell promises to continue indefinitely. However, much consolation should be found in the fact that the sun is now in the vicinity of 92,500.000 miles away and Is getting no closer, so far as observers have been able to discern. GRAIN ELEVATOR IS BURNED Pullman Visited by Early Morning Fire) Loss Is $30,000. . PULLMAN, Wash.. July 20. Fire early this morning destroyed the Pa cific Coast elevator and warehouse, the Standard Oil tanks and house and the warehouses of a number of Pullman merchants. The loss will total nearly $33,000 and is distributed as follows: Stewart Clure Hardware Company, $8000; Billy Reed Furniture Company, 11200; Frank Campbell, $6000: Pacific Coast Elevator Company, $12,400; Sni-lngston Lumber Company, $2000; Standard Oil Company, about $5000. The Insurance carried by the vari ous firms cannot be accurately deter mined, as many of the policies are in the hands of persons who are not in the city. The heaviest loss will fall upon the elevator company, as the. harvest season Is on and grain will soon begin to arrive. This fire is the heaviest that has visited Pullman for years. Free Delivery for Hood River. HOOD RIVER, Or., July 20. The re ceipts from Hood River's postofflce for the fiscal year just closed having ag. gregated $10,400, this city Is now enti tled to free delivery. The City Council has instructed Postmaster William Yates to ask for it and is taking step to comply with the general postofflce regulations in regard to naming streets and having all houses numbered. The growth of Hood River's postal busi ness is said to be the largest in the state in proportion to the population. i CHILDREN'S PARADE PHOTOS.
