An enthu siastic nietingr,of the Republicans o( the Klghth ward was held in the office of the Citizens' Bank, Grand avenue and East Aider street, yesterday when the preliminary organization of a Roosevelt Republican Club was effected. The de clared object of this club Is to aid in bringing about the renominatibn of Roosevelt for President. Those who have Joined the new club hope that this movement will lead to the establishment of many clubs for a similar purpose in Portland and throughout the state. It was declared that the policy of Roose velt cannot be carried out by any other man than Roosevelt himself and that it was the sense of the club that the coun try will demand his nomination for a second elective term for the Presidency. At this meeting C. A. Bigtow was elect ed temporary chairman and W. E. Wil liamson secretary. Another meeting will be held In Odd Fellows' Hall, corner Grand avenue and East Pine streets. Thursday night. June 27, to complete the organization. Canob Trip or? Willamette. Roy TVest, of Portland. Nash Qulnlan, of Seattle, and Milton Morgan, of Corvallis. started from Corvallis Friday, to make the trip down the Willamette in canoes. The lads reached Balem Friday night where they remained until yesterday morning, when they acain took to their boats and headed for Portland. When opposite Kewberg a heavy storm broke and put their frail craft out of commis sion and required them to make the re mainder of the voyage by rail. The trio expressed themselves as heartily onjoy lng the trip and sincerely regretted the nccMent that prevented the accomplish ment of the entire trip in canoes. Young West has gone to his home at Mount Tabor, while Quinlan left last night for Seattle. Morgan will remain in Portland few days before returning to Corvallis where be Is associate editor of a news paper. , Goto Him. Asks Cement Plant. R. C. Kelsey. secretary of the lieHd Hill Cham ber of Commerce, has written to Secre tary Giltner of the Portland Chamber, asking for the co-operation of the latter organization in the development of a cement industry at that place. Secre tary Kelsey writes that a four-foot ledge of calcite has been uncovered near Gold Hill and that the find offers an Induce ment for a cement factory. Mr. Giltner will lend the Gold Hill people whatever aid he can in the development of the Industry- Lionki. Arnold Deat. Coroner Finley will hold no inquest In tho case of Ijlonel Arnold, the 16-year-old boy who was fa tally injured while at hn work In the establishment of Closset & Devers Fri day afternoon. Tho boy died at Good Samaritan Hospital early yesterday morning. He was unloading boxes from an elevator, when a number of them toppled over striking him on the head. Quits Pacific Monthlt. On account of 111 health John Klemming Wilson has resigned as editor of the Pacific Month ly. Mr. Fleming, who is one of the best known writers In the Pacific Northwest, has suffered a nervous collapse and will stive up work until he recuperates. After spending some time at the seaside he ex pects to resume literary work. Methodist Ministerial Association. At the regular meeting of the Methodist Ministerial Association, to be held to morrow morning at 10:30 o'clock in Taylor-Street Church. Rev. T. B. Having completed the course pre scribed by the Institute each member of the class will receive a diploma from the institution. A. Tschudt Attempts Suicide. A. Tschudy. a well known Portland man. said to be heir to a large estate In Swit zerland, attempted to leap overboard from a steamer that was leaving San Francisco for Tacoma last Friday morn ing, but was caught and restrained. He was kept on the vessel until she reached Tacoma, when he was turned over to the police. He formerly worked for C. F. Pfluger. of this city. Drink is -said to have caused a mental derangement. Will Reject All "Bids. In the Judg ment of the Board of Control of the Catholic Young Men's Club. of St. Mary's Parish, Alblna. the bids for the clubhouse are too high and will be re jected. The highest was $17,000. The clubhouse was expected to cost $10,009. and the bids were somewhat discourag ing, but the directors hope for better re sults next time. The building is to be a frame affair. The concrete basement is competed. rrfijATH A MrsTEfRT. Frank Hubbard, of Dallas. Polk County, died at a local hospital Friday morning from unknown causes. The body was shipped to his former home for burial. He died in great pain. The skin on his abdomen and back looked as If it had been scald ed, but, if he knew how he was injured, he refused to tell. The man who yesterday delivered himself into the hands of the police, admitting that he had committed a murder In Tatea ville. Pa , has been identified as James McNulty. of Yatesvllle. Pa., by George Martin, formerly a resident of that city. Several years ago, according; to Martin, a young; man sitting In com pany with a lady under a tree was ap proached from behind and shot in the back. The young man died, but before expiring recognized the man wtio aliot i.tm and who subsequently fled tha country. McNulty also confessed to the killing; of Kate McPermltt In Yatesvllle. be cause, he said, she had persuaded his sister to go to a fortune-teller who pre dicted his father's death. The latter was accidentally killed a short time after.
