SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES FOR REPUBLICAN NOMINATIONS ; V U .1 "fe I'M- -7 ; 1 UD7TO2, " t A. L. BABBpR DEVLIN AND LANE (Continued from First Page.) Cellars led the ticket on the, ast Side, with Blair second and Annand third. Cel lars' heavy lead on the East Side grave him the nomination, while Drlscoll's strength on the West Side did the same for him. Annand ran surprisingly well on the West Side. Democrats Scatter Votes. Something of a surprise was - the. large number of scattering votes' on the Democratic ballot. For the offices of City Treasurer, City Attorney and Municipal Judge, for which there, wero no regular candidates, many names, were written In by the voters. Just as Dr. Lane was placed In nomination' against George H. Thomas for -Mayor.. A still longer lfst of Democrats were written on the ballots for Councilmen-at-large. Their totals may have been still higher, as several of the precinct chairmen nelectedj to give the detailed scattering vote on the sample ballots sent out. D. M. Watson, re ceiving three votes, is legally entitled to enter the contest against Werlein for City Treasurer, and John Monjag, H. W. Contests for City Offices. , For the city offices all of the suc cessful Republican nominees won by good pluralities. Al L. Barbur, Repub lican candidate for City Auditor, had a close competitor in W. S. Lotan, Bar bur defeating Lotan for, the nomination by only 168 votes. J. E. Werlein had no opposition for the nomination as City Treasurer and polled practically the ' entire Republican vote. John P. Kavanaugh Is cuccessful over William KELLAHKB EXPLAINS DEFEAT. There Im little for a defeated candi date to say. I am disappointed, but not "sore." It was simply a matter . of the votes not being cast. The. senti ment throughout the primary cam paign wm that no matter which of the Republican candidates received the nomination. Mayor Lane would be elected. I attribute my defeat try rhe light vote cast. The majority of the votes cast were those of the "Inter ests," and they managed It well. The vote that was polled for the rest of the candidates represented the inde pendent Republicans. The lovefeast Is over and the real campaign is about to start. 1 look for a campaign that will long be remembered. ' DAN KELLAHER. n. McGarry for the place on the ticket In June as City Attorney. Kavanaugh won by 2364 votes. George J. Cameron administered a severe defeat to J. Sil vestono and won the honor of. being the Republican sfnndar'd-'beiirer as Mu nicipal Judge by'3350 votes, silvestone had been an indefatigable worker ' In the primaries, .had succeeded In getting supported from factions supposed to be at sword points, and his overwhelm ing defeat was a surprise to many who thought he .would at ,least be- in the race. " . ' ' Contests in the Wards: ' ' ' ' In . the contests for Councllmen on the Republican ticket, Robert Preston de feated W. A. Storey in the First Ward. The greatest interest was centered In George L. Bakers race in the Fourth. Baker had encountered vigorous opposi tion and his opponent, Rufus C. Holman, strong support from the Municipal As sociation and the pulpits. Baker was nominated by a majority of 254. Dr. W. T. Cottel won In the Fifth over J. F. Guatemalan President Has Narrow Escape Many Arrests Cause Reign ot Terror. WASHINGTON, May 4. Another at tempt to assassinate President Cabrera, of Guatemala, according- to 9. dispatch received today by Minister Toledo, was made yesterday. In this instance, what is described in a general way in the advices as a "mine" was placed not far from the mansion of President Cabrera, apparently with the intention of ex ploding it at a time when it would be most destructive. The mine was dis covered, the attempt at assassination thus being futile. This news was re ceived in a cablegram, of which the fol lowing is a translation: "Guatemala, May 4 Minister Toledo, Washington: Yesterday a great mine was discovered placed in front of the barracks of the guard of honor, 120 feet from the American Legation and 170 feet from the Presidential mansion. This scandalous attempt at assassination has created great indignation among all classes of society. "BARRIOS." Senor Barrios is Minister of Foreign AJTairs of Guatemala. The guard of honor is the special guard of Senor Cabrera. It appears from advices which the Mex ican Ambassador has received from the City of Mexico that a condition of chaos exists at Guatemala following the recent attempt to assassinate Senor Cabrera. The Mexican account is that indiscrimi nate arrests are being made of men, women and children, both Guatemalans and persons of other nationalities, and that these prisoners are being harshly treated.
