WITH THE WALKER WHITESIDKS COM PANT.
There are hundreds of Portland theater
goers who will be delighted to hear that
Howard Gould will be seen with Walker
Whiteside at the Heilig next week in

a season as leading man with the Mo
rocco stock company at the Baker and
for many weeks he was leading man of
the Columbia stock company in the palmy
days three years ago. It was here that

temporarily, owing to an Injury to his
breastbone, which required one of the
most difficult operations known to suiv

health and only recently has he been able
o return to the profession which he
mdorns.
Everybody In the city who knows Mr.
Gould as an actor or In private life
holds him In the highest esteem and he la
assured of a cordial reception on his re
turn next week.
REIMS STARTLED BY LION
Store Scared Even Than the Excited
French Populace.
PARIS. April JO. (Special.) The quiet
old cathedral city of Reims was all In a
fluster the other day when it was ru
mored that a whole menagerie had broken
loose In the streets. The only wild beast
at large, however, was a particularly
harmless lioness, which was filled with
more alarm at her own freedom than
with evil designs on the populace.
When she found herself In the streets
she was so bewildered that she bolted for
somewhere to hide. In her career she-
knocked down a small child, then upset
an old woman, but was diverted from her
course bv a courageous young man who
cried "shoo!" at her, making her skee
daddle down a side street.
Here she met a butcher's cart, and,
while she made a hearty meal of the con
tents, the boy in charge fled In terror,
spreading the report that the whole me
nagerie was loose.
Soon the bravest of the citizens were
out after the lioness, armed to the teeth.
