The funral of Mrs. Nancy McCalla, who was burned to death at tier borne. 54 East Eleventh street, Wednesday after noon, was held yesterday afternoon at the Central Baptist Church, East Twen tieth street. ' A' resolution recommending an appro- priatlon of $5000 to pay for the services of an expert engineer and landscape- srar- dener In laying- out a park and boulevard system for Portland was adopted yester- afternoon at the Joint meeting- of the Council. Parte, -Board and . Initiative One Hundred. . Members of the three organiza tions expressed themselves as heartily in favor of the movement that has been In augurated to lay out an extensive system of pleasure grounds for Portland. The vote on the resolution was unanimous and it is probable that the appropriation will be voted by the Council at its next meeting. Several park locations were discussed, but it was decided to take no positive ac tion toward making selections until the report of the expert is received. One of the chief reasons advanced for the em- uioyment of an Eastern man is that in wiis way an entirely unbiased report will he obta I ned it t id - residents will know that no partiality has been shown any-particular section of the city. An option on 27 acres of land on Council Crest was offered the city by Mrs. P. C. Smith. The price stipulated is $100,000, and the option is binding until October 1, un less the park measure fails to be adopted at the June election. It was recommend ed that the option be accepted, without binding: the city in any way to take the land. An option which was offered some time ago on 14 acres on Mount Tabor was also ordered accepted under the same conditions. J. O. Ainsworth, chairman of the park committee of the Initiative One Hundred, explained the park and boulevard system which has been drawn up by that organi sation, involving: the expenditure of $1,000,000. He said that the essential step at the present time waa the setting" aside of $5000 for the services of an expert. Councilman Gray said tiint a majority of the ways and means committee of tbe Council favored the. project, and that he thought the appropriation would be au. thorized by the Council. Francis I. McKinle'y, second in com mand In the Oregon land frauds, who fled to China August 15, 1905, is reported to be running a small hotel on the out skirts of Shanghai. .The news of McKin. ley's whereabouts was brought to- San Francisco by L4ttle Egypt,, who accom panied McKinley when he disappeared. Little Egypt returned from the Orient the other day on - the "United States transport Logan, only instead of being' Little Ktgypt." she comes back, as Mrs. John T. Green. The dancer is he wife of a private in the Twelfth Infantry. She declares that she did not go to the Orient as McKinley'8 companion, but that she was a passenger on the' ateamer Mongolia and thereby gained the reputa- tion of having gone with the man who flgrured so largely in Oregon's land frauds. Mrs. Green says that McKinley is In constant fear that he will be spotted by the United States Federal authorities. On account of this, .ah e nays that McKin ley is practlo&Uy a. physical wreck.
