THE HCNDAY OREGONIAN, PORTLAND, JANUARY 13, 1907. ONION BUYERS FAIL TENANTS FORCED Great Tl TH casoiti o TO MOVE STOCK Their Scheme to Break Market Is Nipped in the Bud. Furniture Company t Half EM at GROWERS LEARN OF PLOT Yamhill R Clearieg"Cj Pass resolutions Thanking The Ore- gonlan for Itcvcallng Combination to Suppress News of Rising Prices in Other Markets OREGOMAN COMMENDED BV OXION GROITEBlj. Ke.olvej. That we, the members of the Confederated Onion-Growers Asso etat Ion, in behal f of the sh Ippers and producert of th Nurthweet, srve & vot of thanKs to The Oregonlan for Its prompt exposure of the- methods of cer tain onion buyers for California nouses.' having offices In Portland, and certain newspaf.tr men of tula city in their at tempts to 8upprm market quotations, and In aendtnc out dtsoouractng- report of market condition, to enable these California buyer to purchase the onion crop of the Northwest at prices far be low its actual value. Xnd further, that we recommend the market reports of Th Oxonian to the confidence of all . shippers and producers. The onion growers of the Pacific Northwest are up In arms sfrainst a small clique of buyers In this city who have boen Industriously trying1 to break the market while prices have been rapttly advancing in other coast cities. These buyers, who are only one or two In number, liave been assisted by n evening; paper In Portland. It was their hope that the false reports as to market conditions thus dissemi nated would rrlfrhten the farmers into selling at a sacrifice. With other mar. keta. particularly that at San Fran- cfsco. advancing rapidly there was an opportunity for them to clean up a lot of money if the news of the rise In prices could be suppressed. Thflr scheme, however, was nipped in the bud by The Oregonlan, which disclosed their methods and speedily put a stop to.thelr game. The evening paper that sought to enable these few buyers to hoodwink several hundred Oregon farmers only brought upon itself the contempt ot the onion growers. A meeting of the Confederated Onion Growers' Association was held in the Chamber oC Commerce yesterday and these onion buyers and the newspaper In question were roundly denounced. The members expressed themselves as only wanting a fair show in the mar- Ketins ot tueir product, They thought it the duty of newspapers to give only facts regard ! rigr the markets for agri cultural produce and they resented the attempt that had been made to deprive them of their hard-earned money by the publication of falce reports. Tried to Pepre&s Prices. These reports, they declared, were printed for the sole purpose of de pressing: prices. The Oregonlan. In the resolution herewith published, was thanked for exposing the game and Its reports recommended to all producers and shippers. The Association Is composed of near- ly all the onion growers in tho state and is affiliated with like bodies In Washington and Idaho. At the com mencement of tho season the members voted to Hold their onions tor a mini mum price of Sfi cents delivered at Portland, or its parity in the producing section, and they have stood well by the agreement, It was believed from the experience of former years that prices would be higher In- th Winter than In the FI1 It was a. wore or lea? rleKy miftrttKinj to at tempt in this manner to hold up the market. but the association leaders had plenty of pluck and would not. jive in, tor several months the outlook was dlscourarlntr for the farmers. but f about ChrlKtmaa time thlnsrs began to brighten and the San Francisco mar led started to crawl up. Prom IS cents. the price there, advanced by dcKrcen to $1,211. Then It was that a few buyers for San Francisco firms, vlth their newspaner ally, tried to jret the better of the Oregron growers. but their bunffllne attempts were of no avail. Beaten at their same, they are now trying to smooth things over as well as they can. but the growers place no confidence In them or in the reports they are publishing. A. J. fanno, the president oC the Association. Is confident that the 6re- Kon onion holders will get good prices during the remainder or the saason. resident rnnno TalKs I feci as If we are out of the woods now." he said after the meeting. "There is a good demand all around, and prices should continue satlstac tory up to the close. It Is said too many onions were raised in the state. but it must be remembered that the mly onions, those which ripened a month too soon, are now growing and, of course, are oft? the market. The onions grown on Irrigated land will remain good lor the rest ot the sea- ton. The market may not make an uninterrupted advance, but I believe that all temporary declines will be more than mado good," George J. Burtt. catena's Oregon representative, who ri n been helplns the grower! In their flsht. for proper prices, Is also ot the opinion that toe slight check In yesterday's advance at San Francisco Is only temporary and will be more than opposed by- the suc ceeding gains. Mr. Burtt, who Is well potted on conditions in California, says the crop In that state Is so closely cleaned up that there will be a srood steady marKet tor Oregon onions trom now on, unless too many aro shipped South at one time. If the surplus Is moved Judiciously and well distributed, the growers wit find the season. h.as teen a profitable one. Mooted Point In Contest Case. B9I5B, Idaho, Jan, 13.
