18- THBJSUNDAY -OREGONlAX, -FOItTLAXl, AUU?5T . af 1JK)5. :, DE CAPRIO'S GREAT BAND MOSTLY MADE UP OF . LOCAL MEN" . j9.J CAP&fO. By F. W .Goodrich. rgUCH has been written about the I bands of Llboratl. Innes and DIorke. their constitution, their rondltions and their styles of playing, but little or nothing has been said about the one band upon which the brunt of Exposition work has fallen. Since the opening day on June 1, when the Administration Band marched' in Its place In the great Inaugu ral parade, they and their leader have rendered splendidly faithful and efficient service, playing at reception?, banquets and exercises of various kinds, escorting Governors, Senators and other distin guished mon to their hotels and places of residence, rendering concert programmes of various kinds. The work of the band has been uniformly good, and in many Instances excellent. In constitution It is a purely military blind, suitable for open air performances, and not too large or heavy for Indoor work. Modeled upon the military bands of Germany, Austria and Great Britain, the brawj is sonorous with out being blatant,, the woodwind is suf ficiently strong without being piercing and unpleasant. Composed mostly of local player., the band is a credit to Portland, and it will be a matter of great regret if the close of the Fair means the end of the band. It is well balanced, and that It is agreeable to listen to is proved by the large throng of listeners that Is always present when ever the band may beplaying. One of the pleasant memories of the Ex position is that of the band playing some beautiful selection under the shadow of. the quaint old gables of the California building, surrounded by flowering plants and beauteous trees. The leader, SIgnor De Caprlo, is a ca pable musician and an artistic performer on his chosen instrument, the trombone, one of the grandest and yet withal one of the instruments of the brass family ca pable of soft and rich effects. Witness its Jse by' Schubert in his great symphony In C major. In the hands of SIgnor De Cgprlo the Instrument loses none of Its effect, . and he is fully conscious of Its capabilities. As a conductor he is watch ful and alert, and gets from his- players' renditions full of vim and force. The personnel of the band is composed of many well-known local players, and they all. In their respective departments, do their work right well. The music played by the band Is good and well arranged, many of the best standard overtures, se lections from the bet known light operas and many pieces of lighter caliber. Wag ner movements are often In evidence, also many selections of the younger Italian school, such as "Cavallcria Rustlcana" and II Pagllacci." There Is no strain ing after effect In the programmes, no pulling down of big compositions which look well on paper, and substituting others of lighter texture when the time comes for performance. To sum up. It i m a gooa oana, aeserving or more recog nition and encouragement from musicians and the people of Portland. PREST.
