Arthur Duffey, the crack sprinter, had many stirring experiences during his re cent trip abroad. His story of how he won n uninterrupted string of victories against the best short-distance runners of. Europe is interesting. On one occa sion he captured a seemingly hopeless handicap by "beating" the pistol of a nervous- starter. Though Duffey .admits the" action . a little unsportsmanlike, he gives as an excuse that he was pitted against manifestly unfair allowed di stances and competing against a rough crowd of athletes. "When he left Glasgow he went to Pon typriod. "Wales, where he was to run on the following Monday afternoon. Ow ing to his fatigue at the end of the Journey, he decided that he would com pete only in the Welsh championship; but when he arrived at the place or com petition rumors were afloat that the co bles were going to bring down a runner more fleet than even Mercury, and would defeat all the vlsting champions. It was with little difficulty that Duffey defeated Wadsley, the English champion. and Lundle, the "Welshman, by more than two yards, in the time of nine and four-fifths seconds. In this race the American was disappointed in not hav ing the new wonder to compete against, but found that he was saving himself for the handicap race. As Duffey was still in fine form, he made up hj3 mind to try conclusions with the mining chap in the open race. Each -won his heat and semi-final, the "Welshman "winning his handily, while Duffey. beginning to feel the effects of his long journey and the previous heat, had to be content with snatching victory in the last few strides. Duffey was completely played out after the fourth sprint, and when he retired to the dressing-room he realized that he was totally unfit to meet his rival In the final heat. The "Welshman seemed to have noticed Duffey's wearied condition and became confident. As the American felt It would be to his disadvantage to race, he proceeded .to obtain permission from the officials to stand down. Imme diately it spread around ' the excited crowd of rough miners that Duffey was afraid to meet their champion, and they jeered and rebuked him in a most an noying manner. The crowd was a most "unsympathetic one, so that Duffey was practically driven to race, but he insisted on a long rest. After the .various other events had been decided, Duffey came upon the track feeling rather weak, and it dawned upon him of a sudden that it would be impos sible to win under ordinary circum stances, and with the stinging insults of the bystanders and the thoughts of a large handicap which he was forced to concede, his only chanbe was to resort to a little strategy with the rather Irri table and excitable starter. As the American inquired from him how he proposed to start the race, the nervousness, of the official became more apparent. Duffey -cautiously crouched against the line, and as the words "get. ready" lingered on the lips of the starter. Duffey sprang forward amd. pawed. tke "Welsh runner just as the starting shot was fired. The bystanders were taken aback, but the Welsh sprinter was game, and stuck to his task, keeping neck and neck with Duffey. The result was that Duffey made up the handicap which he conceded, and broke the tape a scant yard in front of his opponent. That night Duf fey set out for Abergavenny with two prizes' under his arm and a happy look on his face. Duffey confesses that it was unsportsmanlike, but says he thought he was justified in doing the "stunt" 'Varsity Exhibit at St. Louis Fair. CHICAGO, March 12. Hani for the University of.
