In Order to Get the Industry to Move "West, Locnl Capital 31ut Be Invested. 8 I Meier Frank Company Meier dbFrankCompany Meier Subscription books to the treasury stock of the Andrews Saw Manufacturing Com pany will be opened at the Merchants National Bank this morning, and it is hoped that the $50,000 which is needed to bring the large plant of the corpora tion to this city will be raised promptly. J. Frank Watson will act as trustee, and already some of the prominent financiers of Portland have handed in their sub scriptions. One of the first was Henry "W. Corbett The Andrews factory, owned by E. An drews & Sons, is at present located In "Wllliamsport, Pa., and has for some time be&i contemplating moving "West. It will bring between 50 and 60 families with it, for all Its skilled labor will come, and several cities have tried to secure in one lump so big an increase in Industry. But Portland's enterprise has won, and there Is practically no doubt now that the deal will go through. The cost of moving the plant will be $50,000, and It is to secure this sum that the treasury stock will be sold. The company has been reorganized and incor porated under the laws of Oregon, and, wholly outside the matter of municipal pride, it will prove a splendid investment. On its capitalization of $150,000 it has been paying a regular 15 per cent dividend, and it is regarded in the trade as about the best piece of property of the sort in the country. John T. Grayson, who has made a, thor ough Investigation, said yesterday: "All arrangements looking to the trans fer of the plant have been made, and all we need to do now is to raise the neces sary $50,000. It Is a magnificent oppor tunity which Portland cannot afford to let slip. It will bring us at least 50 fam ilies, and just the sort of families wc want. The Andrews Company ranks high in the commercial world, and its products have a world-wide fame. The firm has been making the very highest class of saws for years, its factory having been originally established in Williamsport in 1S62. What makes the investment so good is the company's ownership of almost priceless patterns and patents, as well as of great quantities of costly special ma chinery. "We have secured three and one-half acres of land in Portland, with 210 feet of water-front, as a site for the factory, and it exactly suits the company. The work of removal will be begun as soon as the ?50,OCO Is raised, and we hope that will be subscribed at once. Five hundred shares of treasury stock will be offered at $100 per share, and this will pay the cost- of the transfer. It will be an ex pensive piece of work, but it Is well worth the money." Representatives of the Andrews Com pany are now In the city. TO INSTALL OFFICERS. HIkIi School Alumni AsHOclntlon to Meet Tomorrow Night. The Portland High School Alumni Asso ciation will hold its semi-annual meeting at the Hich School building on Monday evening, January 19, at S o'clock. This Is to be the most important meeting of the year, for the reason that the officers-elect are then to be installed. They are: President, Dr. Robert Wendling; vlce presldent, Margaret O'Connor; secretary, Verdi Monroe; treasurer, Tom West; ex ecutive committee, Raymond Steel and Parthenia Dukchart. The president is ex-officio a member of the said committee, and, with the other two members, will then appoint perma nent sub-committees, which for the next year are to have -full charge of any af fairs that may be given by the associa tion. At this meeting a reception of some kind will be arranged for the February class of 1903, which Is to graduate on February 4, and If the preceding meetings for such purposes are any criterion, there will be a spirited argument In order to determine the place for the reception, the time of the reception, and the kind of a reception. Among numerous other Important mat ters to be brought before the meeting, an endeavor will be made- to cancel on the books all back dues of any member for the year 1903. There are now over 1100 members of the alumni, and the associa tion la in a most flourishing condition. A Question that for years has caused much etrife was definitely settled at the last meeting, and will probably remain so for years to come. That Is, all "outside girls." or in other words, all girls who are not graduates of the High School, are barred, excepting wives of graduates, and any girl who has not paid her dues is not entitled to an invitation for an escort. CASH REGISTER IS $6 SHY Deputy Sheriff Collect Judgment With Aid. of a Revolver. Deputy Sheriff Adklns had to bring his gun into play yesterday in enforcing a Judgment summons at the saloon of the DeMartlni Company, First and Madison strecta. He had been Instructed to collect $2 20 and costs from the DeMartlni Com pany in the .suit instituted against the lat ter by Otto J. Kraemer to recover $2 20 witness fees in a case recently tried at the Circuit Court, Emmons against the DeMartlni Company. A big bartender was holding up the bar when Adklns arrived, end the officer of the law said: "I've been sent here to collect $6 judgment and costs in a lawsuit. Here are my papers." "Go to Seattle!" snorted the bartend er, with indignation. "I am an officer, and here is my star," insisted Adklns, showing his emblem of authority. "To h 1 with you and your star!" snarled the bartender, suddenly gripping a wicked-looking clubstlck. Then it was that Adklns gripped his re volver, and, shoving the muzzle danger ously near the bartender's nose, said: "You stand away from that cash register, and If you touch me with that stick I'll let daylight through you!" The bartender turned pale and sneaked away two yards. Adklns, with his left hand gripping his revolver, took out tha $6 with his right hand, handed vthe bar tender a receipt for the money, lighted hLs cigar again and went back to report at Justice of the Peace Reid?s courtroom. NEW OREGON INDUSTRY. The Oregon Condensed Milk Company, of which J. P. Tamiesie, M. D., is presi dent, and Fred Schomburg, manager, has commenced operations at Hlllsboro. Their "Oregon Grape" brand of sterilized evaporated cream is guaranteed to be Btrictly free from any coloring or foreign matter, and will undoubtedly prove popu lar with the discriminating public BRINGS CHICAGO NEARER. Conditions make this one the best by far that we have ever held. The young wife of a busy and successful man said to a friend: "Will is such a queer man at business. Just when he's so full of orders that the poor fel low is nearly wild because his men can't deliver goods promptly, he rushes .out all his salesmen to get more orders. I can't understand it."
