There Trero three revolver shots fired In an. ex citing pursuit by Special Officer Nash early yesterday morning alter a -well-dressed young man, who afterward gave his name as W. H. Packard. In the neigh borhood of Second and Alder streets. Packard was locked up. charged with breach of tho peace, and the probabilities are that tho case will be dropped after Packard and his friends pay for the trouble they have caused, which consisted lnforclbly taking away a horse which be longs to George Clark, a hackman. Clark flrove up to tho Perkins Hotel cafe yester day morning to partake of lunch, leaving his horse and coupe standing at the curb atone. His meal finished, Clark went out ride, to find that his horse and coupe were bo longer to bo seen. Special Officer Nash 6tarted on a still hunt. At Second and Alder streets Nash saw a coupe being driven by Packard, who whipped up the horse when be saw the officer. "Stop!" yelled Nash, who was riding his bicycle. But by this time tho horse was speeding at a lively gait, and a man named Fred Fredericks, who was inside the coupe, opened the door and Jumped out, falling heavily on the asphalt. Nash continued his pursuit on foot after the driver, who had leaped from the hack and was run ning like a deer. To frighten the man Nash fired three shots In the air, and at the third shot 'he surrendered to Patrol Driver Johnson. He said that he and a Jrlend, Fred Fredericks, had taken the Tiorse to drive around town. Fredericks was arrested later in the morning by Special Officer Smith. Both defendants were allowed to go on their own recogni zance. Special Summer schedule of A. & C. R. R. between Portland and the beaches to bo continued until September 14. To meet the urgent demands of its patrons and traveling public in general, the A. & C. K. R. has decided to continue its pres ent unexecelled train service between Portland and all beach points to Septem ber 14, and until that date the Portland Seaside Express will leave Union Depot every Saturday at 2:20 P. M., as at pres ent, and the morning train leaving Port land at 8 A. M. dally will run through direct to all beach points, and returning, leave Seaside at 5 P. M. dally. Traveling Man Robbed. Some daring thief on a ladder made his way yes terday morning to a second-story room In the Imperial Hotel occupied by S. V. Miller, a traveling man, stole $300 In gold and silver, and a watch and chain, and got away. The police are now at work on the case. Miller stated that tho thief could not possibly have gained an en trance by forcing the door. as. being a light sleeper, the slightest noise would have awakened him. The window in Mil ler's room was left partly open, and the $200 was in his clothing, which was on a chair. Officers of Coal Mxkino Company. At a meeting at.the office of J. P. Finley the Black Rock Coal Mining Company was organized by the election of the fol lowing directors: J. P. Finley, John Mon tag, F. Li. Kneeland. Albert "Welch, W. L. Bartlett, B. C. Riddle. W. H. Joyce. The following were elected as officers: Presi dent, J. P. Finley; secretary. F. L. Knee land; treasurer, Albert Welch; vice-president, John Montag. Drink Portland Weiss beer. To Keep Out Animals and Birds. Col lector of Customs Patterson has recelvod a notice from H. A. Taylor. Acting Secre tary of tho Treasury Department at "Washington, that wild animals, or birds must not be landed without a permit from .the port of importation. The notice re cites that it has come to the knowledge of tho department that the law on this sub ject Is not strictly enforced at the differ ent ports, and the Collector Is directed to see that the statute is not violated, wheth er the animals or birds are imported as a regular consignment of dealers or brought by passengers as pets. The statute pro hibits the bringing in of foreign wild ani mals or birds, except where they are dis tinctly natural history specimens or cage birds. English sparrows are specifically proscribed: also flying foxes, fruit bats and starlings. There Is not much trouble with this law in Portland, because there are few Importations of animals and birds. Looking for an Eye. A man engaged In the manufacture of optical instruments was met yesterday wearing a veu wor ried expression. "I'm looking for an eye." said he, "and 111 be hanged If I can find it. I mean an artificial eye, not a real one," he added, seeing a startled look In the other's face. "A man in. Seattle we get all of Seattle's orders for artificial eyes wants a match for an old, out-of-date eye that ho picked up years aico. probably In a second-hand store, and as j it is a very peculiar thing, I'm having a hard time to find a mate. There Is only one establishment besides our firm that carries eyes in town, and I'm afraid I'll have to send that man a blue one 'nstead of the chocolate-brown eye that he or dered. If I could see the man It would be easy enough, but I'm up a stump as it is. "Well, so long. I've got to find that eye." Sheriff "Wants Night Jailer. Sheriff Storey wants a night Jailer In the County Jail to assist County Jailer Jackson. There are seven prisoners in confinement charged with murder In the first degree, and three awaiting trial for manslaugh ter, and the Sheriff thinks the responsi bility Is too great for one man. Jailer Jackson serves from tho hour be arises In the morning, C o'clock, until he retires at 10 o'clock at night, and Is also respon sible for their safe keeping while ho is asleep. Sheriff Storey has sent a letter to the County Commissioners stating that ho thinks this is too great a strain on the jailer, who ought to have a night deputy until these murder cases are disposed of. Sub sequent Investigation, however, had ihown that thero wast sufficient money in the fund to meet the expenditure. The sum to be expended is only $500, and It will bo"applIed to the erection of another building on the hospital grounds and to making improvements to the present structure. OREGON STATE NORMAL.
