Robert McLean, retiring pastor of the Third Presbytorlan Church, and family In the new church, East Thirteenth and East Pine streets, Friday night. It was the flrst large meeting held In the new edifice, and great admiration -was expressed over the beautiful appearance of the auditorium. There was a large attendance of the mem bers and also representatives from other churchos In the city. At the opening several short talks were given. Bishop J. M. Thoburn, missionary bishop o India, "was present and gave a pleasing and appropriate talk In view of the early departure of Mr. McLean for the mission field In Porto Rico. Re marks were made by Rev. D. C. McClel land, Rev. A. A. Hurd, Rev. William E. Randall. Rev. J. F. Ghorraley, Rev. E. T. Allen, Rev. A. D. Soper, and finally Rev. Andrew J. Montgomery, the incoming pastor of Third Church. Response was made by Mr. McLean, ex pressive of Ills appreciation of the many kind things which had been said concern ing himself and family. Ho was sure they would not be forgotten. Two of the pleasing events of the -evening were the presentation to Mr. and Mrs. McLean by the ladles of the Third Presbyterian Church of a roll containing 57 silver dol lars, and also the present of a handsome Spanish Bible by the session of the Mlz pah Presbyterian Church. After these ex ercises the large company were served with light refreshments In the Sunday school room. This week tho Grant's Pass Presbyter Ian Church, of which Mr. McLean was pastor for 11 years, cent Edward McLean, the son who goes with his father to Porto Rico, a fine kodak and two rolls each containing 525 In silver to 3Ir. and Mrs. McLean. Mr. McLean and his son Edward expect to leave for New York next Monday on their way to Porto Rico. Mrs. T. H. Edwards, of 455 Seventh street, assisted by Miss Edwards, on Tuesday evening gave a lawn fete to about 50 guests in honor of Miss Joan Fanley, of Phoenix, Ariz., who spending the Summer with her. Against a background "of firs were scattered tables strewn with flowers, where cake and cream were served later. Jap anese lanterns suspended from the trees Illumined the lawn. A bower, where punch was served, was presided over by jftlss Bertha Edwards. The side porch was converted into a temporary music room, where both vocal and instrumental music was enjoyed. A "Virginia reel was danced on the green to the music of man dolins and guitars, which discoursed sweet strains during the evening. Ping-pong was played in dining-room and parlors. The Mlsocs "Vlggers gave a very enjoy able party on Wednesday evening in honor of Miss Nellie Carman, of Oak land, Cal. The rooms were tastefully decorated with maple leaves and Oregon grape and suspended from the celling were hanging baskets filled with sword ferns, which together with the pretty costumes of the girls and the red, green and yellow lights In the different rooms, gavo a very pleasing effect. The early part of the evening was spent in music, dancing and games, and at 11 P. M. a dainty lunch was served, after which dancing was con tinued until a late hour. A very pleasant excursion was piloted by A. S. Patullo on Tuesday evening. A party of young people loft on the 5:30 car or Mount Tabor and sought a Tetlrcd Bpot on the hill. Here they broiled lamb chops in true Mazama style and enjoyed themselves until a late hour. Those pres ent were: Miss Georgia Wright. Miss Mayannah Woodward, Mrs. Buckley, from California; Mrs. Genevieve Rouse, of Min neapolis; Mrs. Jeanette MacDonald, from South Dakota, and the Misses Wilson. The men of the party were A. S. Patullo, J. G. Wilson. Paul Stahl, Louis Cruik ehank, W. F. G. Thacher and Clyde Cum mlngs. Mrs. E. P. Mossman gave a very de lightful Informal reception oa Thursday afternoon in honor of Mrs. J. P. Prutz man. of San Francisco. Mrs. Prutzman formerly lived in Portland, and has till a very wide circle of friends here, all of whom were glad of an opportunity to see her again. Mrs. S. T. Lockwood also en tertained In honor of Mrs. Prutzman' on Friday evening. The ladles of All-Salnts Mission were entertained at the mission rooms Wednes day everting, August 13, by Mrs. J. H. Moon. In honor of her sister-in-law, Mrs. F. V. Carman, of Oakland, Cal. WEDDIXGS, Starlc-ICiileen. Mr. Otto Stark and Miss Rose KUleen were married on Tuesday August 12, at 9 P. M at the home of Mrs. Alice Kil leen, Rev. Father Hughes performing the ceremony. The house was daintily dec orated with roses and sweet peas, ar rangea against a DacKgrouna of ever green and trailing vines from the hills. Miss Emma Kil- leen, ae bridesmaid, -wore a charming gown of white organdie and Valenciennes lace and carried a bouquet of white car nations. Thomas JCllleen, brother, of the Driae, gave ner away, ana William Den nis acted as best man. After a short reception, a wedding upper wbb served, at which numerous toasts and good wishes were given for the happiness of the bride and groom. Mr. and Mrs. Stark Willtbe at home after August 27, at tjielr new home on the comer of Vancouver avenue and Beech street. Haney-Smlth, .At the aome of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Springer, Howe's Addition, Mr. Charles E. Haney ana Mrs. Emma N. Smith were -v.. united in marriage at 8 P. M., August 11. The wedding was unique, in that the cere mony was performed in a tent, neatly and tastily decorated with Oregon grape and flowers. The bride was dressed in mousse line de sole and the bridesmaid in soft clinging pink mousselln. The ceremony was performed by Rev. P. J. Green, pastor of the Memorial Evangelical Church. 4 Ah end roth-Hub ert. A beautiful and Impressive wedding took place at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Hubert, on Burasld,e street, at 5 o'clock on the afternoon of August 12. when their only daughter. Helen, and Mr. Gustavo Abendroth were united in 'marriage by tho Rev. J. A. Leas. The piano accompanied the steps of the happy pair as they descended the stair?. preceded by the pretty little mild. Hum Breeee, and Master Harold Manlon, cou sins of the bride, bearing flowers and ring, followed by Miss Emily Liebe, the bridesmaid, and Mr. Fritz Abondroth, brother of the groom, as best man. The wedding party W33 stationed unaer a canopy of white clematis and jasmine, while the clergyman repeated the pretty ring ceremony of his denomination, ac companied by the soft tones of Oh, Prom ise Me." sung by Miss Lillian Monk. The bride was attired In a beautiful gown of white crepe de chine and veil, held in place by a cluster pearl brooch, gift of the Kroom, and carried a shower bouquet ot brido's roses. Tho bridesmaid was beauti ful In a pale nlle green silk organdie, car rying a shower bouquet of bridesmaid roses. After refreshments- were served, the party left for a two weeks' visit at Flavel and other seaside resorts. Mr. and Mrs. Abondroth will be at home after September 1 at CCG Water street. Forbes performed the ceremony. The bride was most becom ingly attired In white organdie and car ried a magnificent bouquet of bride's roses. Miss Nettle Grimes, as brides maid, wore a charming gown of pink and carried pink carnations. Mr. D. G. 31c- Pherson acted as best man. Mr. and Mrs. Robblns left on the afternoon train for Tacoma, where they will make their fu ture home. Kennnrd-GoodnonErh. Tuesday evening, August 12, at the Church of the Good Shepherd (Episcopal), corner of Sollwood street and Vancouver avenue, in the presence of a few friends, a quiet wedding took place. William Kennard and Miss Mary F. Goodnough were the contracting persons. Rev. H. D. Chambers officiating. After the ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Kennard took their depart ure for a wedding trip to Los Angeles and the South. Bode-StraJfrht. Adolph C. Bode, of Portland, and Mrs. May Straight, of Nanaimo, B. Is in the city, the guest of Mrs. Anna Seelcy Bernard, 135 Twelfth street. Mrs. Galpln was before hor mar riage a teacher in tho Portland High School. She Is now ono of the lending club women in Ix Angeles, where her Shakespeare classes are prominent features of that city's intellectual life. About 50 women constitute the Galpln Shakespeare Club, whose members havo studied 25 of Shakespeare's plays under Mrs, Galpln's direction. This club and Mrs. Galpln's classes meet In tho New Shakespeare House, a magnificent building, me front elevation of which is a reproduction ot Shakespeare's birthplace at Stratford-on-Avon. A' lecture is being arranged for Mrs. Galpln Wednesday evening of next week. At the Women's Union. Miss Edna Sherriil's is ono of the latest names on the register. Mr. Cooke is a descendant of Fr&ncla Cooke, who came over to America in the Mayflower, He was born in JeffeSaon County, New York, in 1825: moved to Ohio, whero he was educated at Oberlln College, and emigrated to Oregon in 1S51, settling in Salem. He was married in 132. In Portland, Or., to MIes Isabelle Walker, a native of Meridcn, Conn. The couple moved to San Francisco six years ago. For the reception the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Cooke was cheerfully decorated, cays the San Francisco Chronicle, and the ladleo of the Third Congregational Church prepared the supper, which was a feature of the occasion. Many beautiful presents came from relatives and friends. Two children. Clyde Cooke and Gaylord Cooke, and two grandchildren were pres ent. Mr. and Mrs. Cooke have a daugh ter In Cincinnati, the wlfo of Rev, George H. Lee, and a son. Dr. Clinton T. Cooke, a physician of Seattle. The late Allyn H. Cooke, a graduate of Stanford Univer sity and well known as an instructor in tho Polytechnic High School of San Fran cisco, was another eon of this family, Among tho reception guesta wero Mrs P. S; Knight, of Salem, and Mrs. W. Lair Hill, of Berkeley, who are well known la Oregon. Mr. Cooko was formerly a prominent business man of Salem, where he founded and conducted until destruction by fire the extensive machinery plant known as the Agricultural Works.
