THE SUNDAY OREGONIAN, PORTLAND, JUNE 29, 1902. 13 WILL TRY TO END STRIKE BUSINESS MEX OP OREGON CITY LIKELY TO TAKE A HAND. Leader ot Street-Car Striker Says Company "Will Compromise, but Men Won't Accept Offer. OREGON CITY, June 28. Prominent men In this city are showing a disposi tion to take a hand In the Portland City & Oregon Railway strike, with the avowed object of bringing about a peaceable set tlement. If such can be effected. It is possible that a meeting of the business men and others interested will be called, and a committee appointed to take charge of the matter and see what arbitration can do. Mayor Grant B. Dimick favors a settlement of the difficulty, and will do ail within his power to arrange conditions to cause a resumption of operations. The employes are firm in their first de mands for the removal of both Superin tendent Tiffany and Dispatcher Stuart, but the company is Just as firm in its intention to retain the superintendent. It "was stated by one of the, strike leaders this afternoon that the company is will ing to settle the trouble by discharging the dispatcher and seven of the employes, but the men will never consent to a set tlement on this basis. The company ob jects to the rotation of seven of the men for the reason that some of them, it is alleged, disobeyed orders, and others are disposed to agitate the main body of the employes to disaffection.
