. THE-. SUNDAY OBEGONJAN,, PORTLAND, JUNE 8, 1902. WHAT CHINA CONSUMES l?SUS35SS 5-SST--KSr tb3C2S3SB!V Meier & Frank Company Meier & Frank Company OIR. "WARES THAT FIXD MARKET IX CELESTIAL EMPIRE. How AraerlcanlTrnde Might Be In creased, in That Conntry-Kccom-knendatlons o Consul Miller. About Beds New "Gendrons" fi?J fft y. In reply to an Inquiry from a Seattle citizen, Consul H. B. Miller, at New Chwang, China, sent tht following letter of Information, a copy of which he also sent to the Portland Chamber of Com merce as a matter of general Interest In commercial circles, particularly on the Pacific Coast: "The main Imports from the United States Into Manchuria are cotton goods, kerosene and flour. These are consumed by the Chinese, and sales of all are most likely to lncreasa. "Lumber In quantities will only be Im ported by the Russians' Into Port Arthur and Dalny. The Increased number of Russians coming Into Manchuria makes an opportunity for trade along many new lines, but a special study of Russian de sires and characteristics mu6t be made before a satisfactory statement can be made concerning this trade. "For general Information about foreign soods used by Chinese I refer you to my report published In the monthly consular report of December last, which you can secure by application to "Washington. "Concerning payments, the Chinese banks carry the Chinese merchants and bills are usually paid on arrival of goods. Russian merchants usually have long time payments; but the Russo-Chlnese Rank takes up good accounts at about 12 per cent discount per annum. "There is a splendid opening for an agency for American goods at Dalny or Port Arthur, with a branch at Harbin. The agent should be able to speak Rus sian and be well supported by home firms. "For Information concerning Dalny I refer you to my report that Is to be pub lished in either March or April number of the monthly consular reports. A fire Insurance agency would also be able to do considerable business. "A permanent agency at Dalny could handle business by selling at Port Arthur, Sho-Foo, Tien Tsln, New Chwang, Mouk den, Tlellng. Harbin and other places, and by combining Chinese and Russian trade would soon have all they could do. "Goods would be shipped to Japan and then, for the present, reshlpped to all of those points. Manchuria Is going to have a good growth, but It will be mostly Rus sian. I would most certainly advise you to visit Port Arthur, Dalny. New Chwang, Che-Foo. Tien Tsln, Harbin and Vladi vostok, In connection with your business. "There are two American firms doing business in Manchuria, viz., the Ameri can Trading Company and Clarkson & Co- both doing a very large trade. "The following is a partial list of things suited to the trade: Mining machinery for. quartz and placers, pumps, windmills, hardware of all kinds, harness, woolen goods, rubber goods, cheap sewing ma chines, candles, soap, paints, nails. Iron, roofing Iron, boots and shoes, clothing and men's furnishing goods, kodaks, matches, canned vegetables and fruits, milk, butter, beer, wince liquore, cigars, cigarettes, groceries, riding carts, flour mill ma chinery, and in the vicinity of Harbin I think there will develop a large trade for agricultural machinery before long. Har bin is the center of one of the richest agricultural districts In the world. In ex tent and productiveness of the soil. It has river transportation to the sea In Summer and railroads to Vladivostok, Dalny. New Chwang, Port Arthur and Russia. It Is an important railroad cen ter, and has a population of 12.000 Rus sians and many Chinese. It Is essentially a Russian city in China, and Is growing vory fast. It Is a new field and American firms., can easily secure a large trade there.' "An export trade In many things can also be established. Hemp, oil. furs, skins and bristles are plentiful and cheap. "My report on the trade of Manchuria that will most likely appear In the May or June number of the consular reports may also Interest you." PERSONAL MENTION. At an expense of but four or five dol lars and the cost of cartage (usually two of three dollars), you can rent a fine new upright piano of "your own selection from us for one month. You can keep this piano from month to month as long as you decide to pay rent. You can send It back as soon as you care to or should you decide to keep It bIx months or a year at rent and then pur chase, you can do so, and we will allow from the price all that has been paid ue In rent and cartage except a little Interest You can then arrange to pay oft the balance in small sums month by month Vory many people put off getting a piano without any good reason whatso ever. For such the renting plan Is well adapted. You can rent until you are quite satisfied that you wish to have a piano permanently, and that the Instru ment you have taken Is a good one; you can then purchase if you so decide, and all that has been, paid us, as we have said before, will be allowed from the price. To the many who have been "think ing about it" for so long, we suggest the renting plan. Go to Eilers Piano House this week tomorrow. Take a piano at rent now; purchase later U, It then seems agreeable to do so.
